4 out of 5 eggsthin and light and fast

Pros: bright screen
backlit keyboard

Cons: touchpad issues

Other Thoughts: Great, light and portable computer. Super thin, and handsomely finished in black brushed aluminum with red base trim. I have three Windows8 computers and not a single one did not require a call to tech support to correct slow responses (which became slower and slower) and even virtual freezing (required a restart to just load in a basic webpage)) --- including this one. HP support was most helpful and easy to access.

Now it is running fast and reliably. I hope no further issues arise. My only caveat to this purchase is the touchpad. I don't mind the feel of it at all (especially since I nearly always use a mouse), but the biggest problem for me are the right and left click on the touchpad: There is only an embossed line delineating their location so you have to look every time which slows you down. Also, it is very stiff which requires some real pushing, not just a light touch. But, in the grand scheme of things, that is a pretty small negative. A fine and good looking machine.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Thin, light, fast, slick design

Cons: Touchpad - I use ext mouse instead...

Other Thoughts: Fairly good ultrabook for the price, $600 + $70 Newegg GC. Of course, can't complain about Newegg shipping, the BEST..

5 out of 5 eggsDoing good so far

Pros: Build quality. Slim design. Light for size and materials. SSD cache also helps a lot. Was on sale when I got it last week.

Cons: Could be faster, but I knew what I was getting when I bought it, so not taking any stars off.

Other Thoughts: Bought this for my niece. She needed a new laptop for school, so I told her to shop around first before picking one out.

Obviously, didn't listen at first and picked an Acer v3 based on just looking at pictures online.

Next, I had her Mom actually bring her to the store to try out as many laptops as she could find (within a reasonable price range) and this was the one she settled on getting.

She actually found a different, older model at the store which was more expensive than this with weaker hardware, so I'm really happy I was able to find this on Newegg just at the right time!

2 out of 5 eggsThought this was the one

Pros: Great Price
Decent Specs
Quality finish

Cons: Horrible touchpad
Feels slow and laggy

Other Thoughts: I have been looking for decent ultrabook to take to grad school with me this fall, and after I found all the 5 star reviews for the Envy brand I was fully expecting to throw 5 eggs this way as well. Just to dive into it the biggest problem with this laptop is the touchpad. It may seem harsh to dock it 3 eggs for a touchpad issue, but honestly a bad touchpad can completely destroy your experience with a laptop.

I saw a comment before about the touchpad having too much friction and kind of laughed at the comment before brushing it off. Well I am not laughing now. Instead of sliding across the touchpad, your finger drags across it. Now I could get used to that, but the worst part is that the touchpad pretty much chooses when it wants to work. Two finger scrolling turns off mid-scroll and will turn back on a couple of minutes later for no apparent reason, along with all other multitouch gestures. The touchpad will also just stop responding to touch-- all the time. Its almost reliable that when I open a webpage or need to move the cursor that the mouse will cease moving. Whats weird though is that the pad will still respond to physical clicks and two finger clicks when it does this, which makes me wonder if it is a driver or hardware issue... Although reinstalling the drivers hasn't helped at all as of yet.

Now I'm usually not one to write bad reviews- I usually pick the best product, which is what I pegged this laptop to be, but a bad touchpad just gives you a horrible experience and I wanted others to be aware of this issue. After some searching, it seems to be a fairly common issue with the Envy line. Take it for what you will.

Other than that the laptop generally appears to be slow and laggy. Keep in mind I'm not doing anything serious with this-- I have a desktop for the intensive stuff. Opening new windows or starting iTunes really makes me wonder about these low-voltage i5's. Although I'm suspicious that the real culprit is the single channel of ram. Pop another DIMM in there and the performance boost should clear it up-- although I will probably not have this computer long enough to find out.

The good for this laptop generally seems to be everything else you may have read about. Build finish look outstanding and the keyboard feels great on the fingers. Small, light, affordable. The speakers are loud, but I certainly wouldn't call the audio quality great. It will manage for an on-the-go laptop though. The specs leave out what kind of screen this is, but I'm definitely certain its an LCD display. Sitting in a decently lit room inside my apartment the brightness is at 90%. My old Mac's LED display would normally be at 40 or 50% as a comparison.

Should anything change for me in the next couple of days in regards to the touchpad issues, I will update this post and add any solutions I may have found.

Hopes this helps someone else. Best of luck!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: I have had this laptop for 3 days and I am very impressed. This is my first personal laptop transitioning from a PC. It really is a nice looking machine although it does attract fingerprints. It boots up quickly and has an ok battery life. You are paying a bit for style over capacity but you won’t be disappointed.

Cons: This is my first experience with Windows 8. Like everyone else I am not impressed.

The one thing that truly bothers me is the lack of separate left / right touch pad buttons. The touchpad descends left and right, I have found this difficult to deal with. It is made more complicated as you need more pressure than expected to activate them. I added in a wireless mouse and it resolves many of the issues.
