3 out of 5 eggsCould have been great

Pros: Even as a refurb, it looked great. 8GB of ram was wonderful and the speed with games was admirable.

HP auto updater upgraded the BIOS with no user input.

Cons: Screen had a dark spot, like the back lighting went bad. The processor was showing over 100C under load and 85C at idle. I'm not sure why.

Standard WIN8 complaints: everything needed updating so expect that to take 2 hours.

Other Thoughts: I could have REALLY liked this laptop, but the screen and heating problems are a real turn off that smacks of poor quality control.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat unless...

Pros: Great hardware and specs

Cons: Do not buy unless you will NEVER do a recovery, reformat, or put a different windows product on this laptop. HP has zero support for windows 7 even though these are not new-tech components. After reformat and windows 7 install no USB drivers and HP does not even have them for download. You buy recovery disks from HP but there is no way to install windows 8 without the bloatware it is maddening. Buy this for your small kids or wife who will simply use the tile interface... that is the only option unless you are willing to put in hours finding the drivers you hope will work and burning them to a disk because the machine wont even detect a thumb drive.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat! However, Read this Warning!

Pros: Great Performance & Affortable laptop for gaming on the go. I have tested a few games; Farcry 3 (High Settings), Deux Ex Human Revolution (Max Settings), Dishonored (Max Settings), Ghost Recon Online (Max Settings), Splinter Cell Double Agent (Max Settings), Left4Dead (Max Settings), Syndicate (Max Settings), Planet Side 2 (Low Resolution & Low Settings 25-30 FPS).

Pros: I have to say this laptop has exceeded my expectations on its gaming performance, an I didn't even have to tweak it with over clocking. Simply click on the battery icon and choose "High Peformance". If you want to see a live demostration of gaming on this laptop, look for me on YouTube by searching "ProGamingProphecy".

Cons: Cons: Refurbished, however it looks new. Battery was either dead on arrival or the laptop refuses to detect it. Keyboard Keys that are usually big are pretty small (Example: Enter). Laptop gets really hot quickly if you don't have a cooler (you don't exactly need one with a fan on it, but laptop does need to breath from under), this may change if you are a hardcore gamer (Get a cooler with a fan). I'm not a fan of Windows 8, but I'm learning to use it; its not super bad and I hear it will get an update (free) to switch between Windows 7 & 8. A year warranty would cost $99, I would say, don't get it (HP automatically gives you a 3 month warranty). At the moment, I have a dead battery in my hands, but before I send the laptop back for a check/repair I will keep playing around with it and finding out what else is wrong with the laptop. Once I feel I have analyzed and found all the potential problems I will send back to HP with the list of problem, if I find anymore of course.

Other Thoughts: Overall Verdict - I'm not sure if this laptop at original price ($500) also comes with a year warranty, but if it does and you plan on purchasing this refurbished with the year warranty, may as well buy it new. If when I send the laptop back for a check up, they fix everything, then this refurbished purchase will be absolutely worth it. (3 Month Warranty FTW!)

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well for me

Pros: A10 AMD chip
large hard drive (750GB)
excellent price point

Cons: Bringing the Windows 8 updates takes a lot of time.
Bringing the HP updates takes a lot of time.
It took me a work day to do it.
That's the price we pay for quick tech improvements; not the fault of the product.
Comes without any disk but I use Acronis backup which I believe is a better way to go. If there were disk, I would have to go through the hassle of updating and adding programs all over again.

Other Thoughts: in my opinion, the A10 AMD chip is similar to a Intel i5 especially if the i5 isn't teamed up with an optional video upgrade (card with additional dedicated video ram)
For me, it's an excellent compromise between price and quality. I run Photoshop and I'm more than satisfied.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective, RMA failure

Pros: Looks like a good deal, the A10 series makes great processors from what I can see, and at middle-low range this rig can play mostly anything. Great price too.

Cons: Refurbished product, arrived with a defective keyboard.

RMA'd. That was over two months ago. After contacting the folks in customer support quite a few times Newegg still hasn't managed to get back to me. Minus four stars, two per month.

Other Thoughts: Runs Windows 8 'stock.' Be ready.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value for Specifications

Pros: Great Value
Good Specs
Reasonably Fast
Quad Core
8 GB Memory
750 GB Hard Drive

Cons: 5400 RPM Hard Drive

Other Thoughts: For a refurbished product, it looks brand new, not a mark on it, screen perfect, no dead pixels. It came with the plastic protective film all over it. The only thing slowing it down is the hard drive. I will probably replace it with a SSD or 7200RPM Drive. Someone else complained about the keyboard, I have had no problems. Wireless connects to my router at 300 Mbps.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Fast shipping
plays crysis 3
windows 8

Cons: Windows 8. Just install start 8 or classic shell, and shazam you have a magic start menu. I personally don't mind windows 8 as it runs very fast, and with a start menu mod, it feels just like windows 7 except faster.

Other Thoughts: Installed a 120gb samsung 840 series ssd and this machine is a beast!

4 out of 5 eggsMajor things are good. Details, not so much.

Pros: Amazing power/value for the price.
Windows 8: easiest basic setup I've had on a windows box yet.

Cons: They shrank the standard size of the enter and shift keys.
The 'L' button keeps alternating between popping off and sticking.
Windows 8: why don't they just have a "Make this function like I'm used to" option? It really wouldn't be that hard, and you wouldn't tick people off.

Other Thoughts: I'm going to be dual booting this with linux as a poor man's dev notebook. I haven't had a chance to install Linux yet, so my review could change drastically if the drivers give me unanticipated problems.

I'm sure over time I will get used to having to reach over a little further than normal to find the enter and shift keys, but in the interim it's quite obnoxious to reach to where they should be and to find a slash, and even more annoying to waste 30 jiggling the keys back in place after they pop off. I'm going to have to use a usb keyboard extensively to be happy with this machine.

Upon seeing the highest level of video resolution, I'm a bit disappointed, but it's really pretty reasonable for 99% of what people will do with it.

If you need a box that can function adequately as a dev machine that needs to be capable of going mobile, this is probably a good one for the job. If you want a sleek, flawless laptop without any quirks for gaming or graphics, this isn't really for you.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Machine

Pros: Excellent parts for the price. I think HP has a perfect blend of quality items here. It's not top of the line, but I have no problems playing my Steam favorites like Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, even Starcraft 2 played great on this with high settings.

Cons: Only con is that Windows 8 comes standard, and HP does not officially support Windows 7 on this machine. However you can modify the bios to wipe Windows 8. Install Windows 7, then you can easily get hardware drivers for the network components directly from their respective vendor. You can find that information by a simple search of the HP website about this model.

After you get the drivers from the vendor and your network connection is working, you simply need to install HP Support Assistant. It will search HP for the drivers that work with Windows 7. What's important to remember, is that this system is the same as its previous version that DID have Windows 7 installed so the drivers are the same and they ARE out there.

Works great for me and no problems! :)

Other Thoughts: I love this machine. I plan on purchasing an equivalent to it this Christmas for my family.
