2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 1 Terabyte of space
Decent Graphics Card
Decent CPU

Cons: WiFi adapter is screwy
Randomly boots up slow, rarely fast
Will not turn on since 02/13/15
Runs very slow at boot up, but warms up to normal

Other Thoughts: I didn't have much to complain about it until now. The laptop just stopped turning on, it shut itself off last night while I was working on something. The AC LED lights 3 times, so it indicates something isn't working. Discharging all the power, then putting the AC adapter in didn't turn in on. Putting the battery back in just continued to have the LED blink. So in assumption, it may be my battery that died. Its only been about 6 months, and it broke? Very unpleased about that.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat

Pros: AMD
large screen
large ammount of hdd space
good battery life.

Cons: windoes 8/8.1 instead of win7.

Other Thoughts: only con is win8 but easily fixed by using linux dvd to kill all hdd partitions then booting win7 dvd and installing.
get drivers from AMD not from HP and you're good.
this also gets rid of the bloatware problem hp, dell, and other manufacturers are notorious for as well.

win 8/8.1 is a lot better than vista was, but it has a long way to go before its a good os. "upgrade" to 7 and you'll be glad you took the time.

to those having fan issues, this is a high end laptop, get a good laptop cooler and you're good.

4 out of 5 eggsHad it for 10 months now. My thoughts

Pros: Decent speed. Chip is an AMD, which is not as good as Intel for speed and heat, but this chip is one of their faster from that model year -- similar to a Core i3 of the same timeframe.

Cons: Fan noise. AMD chips from this generation do generate fan noise more than their Intel counterparts, due to CPU die size. The fan noise gets really noticeable on this unit when I plug in an external 1080p monitor.

The screens on these refurbs are way, way off in terms of color, and it wasn't until months later that I learned how to fix this as much as possible. I used Windows to adjust color settings, but before you do this, let me give you a clue that will make a huge difference. When you reach the area that has to do with gamma, and you need to make the center dot disappear into the rest of the image, ignore that, and hike the gamma a smidge more than the settings say you should. Next, when you get to the three color sliders to adjust Red, Blue, and Green, slide them all to the middle and adjust from there. The problem is, all of those sliders are set to the far right, which doesn't allow for proper compensation between the colors (one of them needs to move to the right a bit more, compared to the others).

Other Thoughts: Be sure to upgrade the bios, because the original bios has fan settings that are way, way off.

I read on another site that there are a ton of these sold as refurbs, and that the reason was because of poor CPU heatsink installation, requiring them to go back and add thermal grease. I believe this, because my computer was still covered in brand new plastic -- totally new and perfect -- but there was a small smudge of thermal grease on the plastic. It was also missing the AMD sticker, which isn't a big deal, but I saw that other people had theirs.

2 out of 5 eggsOne to avoid for some glaring flaws

Pros: Large screen. Speedy. Can be had for a good refurbished price. Graphics are not bad, but not enough of a bump to make it worthwhile having to endure the noise.

Cons: Fan sounds like a vacuum cleaner under even moderate loads. Keyboard is very low quality and difficult to use. Screen quality looks good initially, when you see the HP screen savers and colors chosen, but once you use it a while, you notice it is not sharp and looks awful. Pre-installed WildTangent Games pops up lots of garbage on your screen. Remove this immediately.

Graphics were nothing special over Intel in regular use, and 1080p Youtube isn't 100% frame-skip free at 1080p.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this as a refurbished unit, and it looked totally brand new and completely perfect. The original manufacturing plastic was entirely untouched.

This notebook is not worth the larger screen, due to the really poor color quality and lack of sharpness. Adjustments helped a little, but overall, it's still very poor. You'll certainly want to get into the color adjustments a bit, to at least make it tolerable. This screen can look good on the showroom floor with the pretty rocks background, but when you give it something more intricate, like photos, it begins to look really poor.

I will live with this laptop for a few years, but am overall not happy with it. I ended up purchasing an external 1080p HDMI monitor anyway, because the screen quality was such a disappointment. I should have gone with a 15" that doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner, and just done the same. AMD is really disappointing, because of the fan noise. The speed is plenty for what I use it for, but their chips run much hotter than intel because they have to juice them up so high to compete (and their die size is larger and uses more power, by comparison).

5 out of 5 eggsDoes what I need it to do

Pros: Fast. Windows 8.1

Cons: Nothing yet in 8 months of ownership..

Other Thoughts: I needed a great web surfer and also something that wouldn't shy away from games as I sometimes play World of Tanks with my son. The laptop does everything I need it to do with ease. I like it so much that I am buying a second one for my wife.

3 out of 5 eggsReview

Pros: It was a cheap buy at under $500.

Cons: Cheap construction, mouse pad difficult to use(recommend getting a mouse), very loud(make sure to turn the setting to 'power saver' seems to help.

Other Thoughts: I would honestly spend a couple hundred extra and get something that's better quality, if I could do it over again would've gone that route. This computer is not a bad buy if the price stays below $500 but wouldn't pay more than that for it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop for $430

Pros: Price ($430 at time of purchase, I would not buy it for its current price of $800. Especially for a refurb that is a terrible price)

Cons: Glossy reflective screen, no cd burner unless I am missing something,

Other Thoughts: If you can find this laptop for around $430 which is what I bought it at, then it is a fantastic steal. Great specs for a low price.

4 out of 5 eggsNot a bad laptop for the right purposes

Pros: It's a great laptop, really. It looks nice, operates nice, and does what it's supposed to.
....AFTER I got rid of Windows 8. I put Windows 7 onto this laptop, reinstalled the drivers myself, and it felt much more comfortable.

Cons: However! I bought this laptop to play TERA: Rising away from home. I knew I wouldn't get anything special ahead of time, but I bought it because of reviews claiming everything ran on highest graphics just fine with no lag. I'm curious as to what these people's definitions of "no lag" are, but I average about 15 fps on the complete lowest settings. On my PC, I get 50-80fps on highest settings, so you can imagine the difference there.

The only other thing I can think of is the keyboard feels fairly flimsy but, it isn't that big of an issue.

Other Thoughts: Overall, this laptop's great. It does what it's supposed to, as you'd expect. I know for a fact it will run simple games and older games quite well, but as for newer games I wouldn't waste your money on it. Save another $100 and build your own PC! At least then, you'll be able to periodically upgrade parts as you need to.

And if you aren't a gamer or a heavy video editor, this laptop's pretty much perfect for you. Just get rid of Windows 8 first. :)

4 out of 5 eggsRefirb HP Pavilion 17-e049wm

Pros: The computer came as expected, started fast, and so far hasn't slowed down. I bought this to be a school and casual gaming computer, and I actually got more than I expected in terms of gaming. I play lots of Source games (TF2, GMOD, Portal, etc.), and just about any source game you throw at this paired with Razer game booster you'll get high setting (no antialiasing though), at 60-90 fps. If you don' wanna risk using game booster, medium settings can get you 60-75 fps in terms of those same source games. Only other game I tried for refrence is Skyrim, which I needed to tune down to medium settings and 720p to get it between 30-40fps, but thats the only game thus far I've had to drop out of native 1600x900, otherwise it can handle most you toss at it. Its great for casual gaming as long as you don't mind the minor choppiness of no antialiasing. As for other basic programs, the computer eats them up with this processor, no worries at all.

Cons: Though it came with windows 8.1 installed already, I'm very unhappy with it. Its a fairly lousy OS, and when I get an extra cash for an external hard drive I'm gonna wipe this drive and install windows 7 so I can have a decent OS again. 8.1 is still too focused around looking for things that were easy to access before, rather than just keeping it user friendly. I feel bad docking an egg for just the OS but it really has slowed me down from what I'm used to, so its significant enough for me. Otherwise, the specs are great, but be prepared to cope and attempt to deal 8.1, unless you go the windows 7 route too.

Other Thoughts: The computer is a great machine. I got it when it was $439 and it was definitely a great deal, but yeah, if you get past windows 8.1 its a fantastic machine.

1 out of 5 eggsLaptop is dead

Pros: Decently fast, was able to handle any game on low graphics, many games higher than that.

Cons: It is dead. It won't turn on, even with the charger plugged in. I purchased the warranty, so I am using that. If you are dead set on buying this, make sure you get the warranty or you will be out of luck and very angry. Would NOT buy again.
