4 out of 5 eggsOverall Satisfied

Pros: Processor is quick.
Backlit Keyboard.
1080p Touchscreen.
USB 3 all ports and extra charging power on one (very handy to charge toys when computer is powered down)
RAID controller (MSATA and SATA can work together in RAID 0,1,or JBOD. and also have a backup service.
12GB RAM
AC wireless adapter (drivers suck but will improve with time)
HP offers a longer warranty than Newegg (hp support assistant software)
HD Graphics 4600 (not nearly as good as 51/5100 Iris but not bad)
Beats dramatically improves the sound. (make sure you play with the application to make it what it can be)
TouchPad is very nice when you get it all dialed in.
Very nice with Virtural Machines.
No trouble with external Displays.
Gigabit ethernet.
Stereo microphone.
Support for 16GB RAM (unless you can find 16gb SODIMM DDR3 modules)

Cons: From J to A on keyboard is slightly raised. (not a big deal)
Cooling sucks. to use full capacity you will need a cooling pad or it will throttle the processor at the TJunction of ... 100C. (100C!!!)
Graphics gets hotter than processor playing games (according to intel XTU)
Ram is not that great of speeds and to get the most from internal graphics i'd like to see 8-9 instead of 11. (im picky but its integrated graphics and makes a difference.) processor can handle 1866 RAM but this computer cannot change the timings or speed (bios or XTU)
Overall issues with drivers (could be me but I cant seem to identify why)
It just seems like most things are just more complicated. could be operating system. could be hardware. this is my first computer with win8.1
Power Adapter is not as awesome as I would like. It seems to be the sort of "weak link" in this rig.
Screen is quite a bit "glairy" (its has a crazy glare) not the best for outside.
Battery life needs to be tweaked but can be capable of 3+ hrs. but you gotta tune it down and do your googles to get it. (brightness, backlight keyboard off, processor tune down, PCI link state mgmt, HDD spin down time....)

Other Thoughts: WEI rating (winaero WEI tool) is
P 8.1
R 8.1
G 5.9
DG5.7
HDD 8.1 (Crucial M500 240GB MSATA)

Intel kinda skrewd us since Ivy Bridge. The therm. paste on the processor cap/processor heat spreader is pew-pew and people are seeing dramatic reduction in temperature by changing the paste on the actual processor beneath the lid/heat spreader/cap. Its pretty messed up.
This has a lot of "mesh" built in the bottom of it that serves no purpose but to trap heat inside the laptop. ( I may or may not have removed it)
easy access to components that users are "allowed" to change.
^I recommend this upgrade highly^

For battery life!! C:\powercfg /energy

1 out of 5 eggsNo So Good Customer Support

Pros: fast

Cons: I bought this to replace old vista based laptop. And I want to put Windows 7 (came with Windows 8). Called HP to get help to install(dual boot) Win 7 but HP asked to me to call Microsoft(??)-Of course MS refused to help me unless I pay them. Ended up to return to Newegg with restoking charge. Bad HP customer Support.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Buy for the price ENVY is a good name

Pros: Excellent all around build quality, Excellent performance, Excellent screen quality 1080P crisp image. No dead pixels no odd noises not too much bloatware.

Cons: None but the os however the touchscreen is warming me up to win8 which I thought I would never use.

Other Thoughts: Get it if its still on sale.

Also it has no CD/DVD drive. Not sure if that's a problem. :D

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast, sleek, decent size/weight, accurate touchscreen tracking, very good brightness. The integrated Intel HD graphics are actually quite competent, thanks to Haswell we've come a long way. Excellent upgradability for an ultrabook form factor laptop. I hope to put an mSata drive in at a later date.

Cons: Lacks hardware on/off switch for the touchpad (most HPs have this feature). Uses a different power cord connector style than most other current (2010-2014) HP laptops, which is only a drag because I have access to numerous extra power bricks with the larger barrel size, but have only one Envy cord. I'll need to buy another sometime soon.
I do not use the battery very often at all, so I'm not bummed about it only being 6 cells like other reviewers have noted.

Other Thoughts: I had originally ordered this laptop from another online retailer in new/1yr condition with lesser specs, for more money - and my order was mysteriously canceled without notice. In retrospect, I'm glad it happened that way because now I have this nicely upgraded Envy instead from NewEgg.

4 out of 5 eggsTwo to Tango

Pros: Screen and colors are awesome. Very stylish, thin and expensive looking with the aluminum case. Super fast!

Cons: Windows 8! I much prefer the screen graphics and operating system of my old laptop. The new HP ENVY resolution is so great that, on AOL especially, it's difficult to find a sweet spot font that's not too small or too large. Maybe I'll warm to Windows 8 - but I doubt it.

Other Thoughts: This is the second HP ENVY that I have had. The first started out as being touchy and quirky - then progressed to a failure of the touchscreen function. Newegg took it back without any question - they even paid for the return shipping. The one I have now works well. It is blazing fast on startup. Really unbelievable how fast it is. I can get 2-3 hours of web surfing and word processing on a battery charge....not great, but adequate for my usage.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent

Pros: Fast;
Sharp screen;
Plenty of RAM out of box;
Thin;
Relatively light;
Attractive design;
Easy access to RAM and HDD;
Refurb pricing (this is HP refurbished; the only sign I saw of it being touched before was a minor scuff on the bottom of the laptop);
Runs Linux like a champ;

Cons: The short battery life;
Power cord plugs in on right, not left;
No optical drive;
Stock 1TB 5400RPM drive;
Speakers are tinny (I was expecting crummy bass what with the beats emblazon, not no bass at all)

Other Thoughts: The short battery life is in part due to the 6-cell battery and in part to HP's default settings. I tweaked the power settings in Windows 8 for something a bit more reasonable for battery mode and managed 1 hour 50 minutes on battery (up from 1 hour). I had no intention of sticking to Windows, but I did want to verify the quality of battery given the poor reviews on battery life found here on Newegg. From command prompt "powercfg -batteryreport" generates an html file with general battery status (with graphs!) showing the battery had no wear and charges to max capacity.

So, I pulled the slow 1TB drive and replaced with a SSD I had sitting on my desk from a previous build and installed Linux. After getting my system set up with the ever "bloated" Gnome 3 I am now up to 2 hours 50 minutes of battery life. I'll keep the 1TB HDD stored for now; maybe some day I'll need Windows on the laptop again and it'll already be good to go.

I'm very happy with the performance of the system thus far, despite the weak battery. I was seeking a device that would be strong enough to turn into a work station for when I'm away from home while not costing me an arm and a leg; which I found here. I don't use public transportation and am rarely far from an outlet, so the short battery doesn't affect me as much as it may others.

In short, I'd give this laptop a tentative approval. It makes a great desktop replacement or 'away from home and need something stronger than typical but not necessarily long battery life' if that is what you're seeking, while I wouldn't recommend it to a student who may need to recharge it in the middle of their 2nd class of the day.

5 out of 5 eggsI like it.

Pros: It came as described. Maybe the refurbished pieces adds to some consistency issues, but mine is pretty perfect. The backlit keyboard is great. The laptop has all the highend features that mattered to me. The fan is super quiet and the unit is always running cool. I had to put my ear up to it to make sure it was running.

Cons: - Still getting used to the track pad
- Compatibility issues wuith certain USB flash drives and HP Recovery Manager.

Other Thoughts: I'm pretty happy with it and would definitely recommend it - especially for the refurbished price.

2 out of 5 eggsGo with a desktop instead

Pros: Lots of power for the price.

Cons: Loud fan noise such that it is not suitable for a shared workspace environment. Hinge does not allow the screen to open to a good viewing angle unless you are sitting at a desk. The screen has excessive glare. And yes, as mentioned the battery life is minimal. As mentioned in the pros, there is tons of power, but you would be better of buying a desktop at a lower price if thats what your after. This is not a nice machine to sit in front of all day at work.

2 out of 5 eggsWow... they never mention the bad points

Pros: You get a lot, great CPU, 12GB Ram, 1920x1068 touch screen, 1TB hard drive... but you also lose a lot

Cons: Wow, the worst battery life of any laptop,and this is not a gaming laptop! You can watch about half of a video before it runs dry... aka 40 minutes..

It does not even have a Strong graphics card. Intel 4600.

But the WORST thing is that you can not upgrade the battery!! they offer a 6 cell, and that is it! no extended, no other options.

#2 bad: The screen.. it is great if you work at a desk, but dare you go outside (for 40 minutes max) the glare is so bad you have to hide in the shadows.
beyond that.. no Sata drive, few ports,

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Laptop

Pros: - Metal case (besides the bottom of the laptop)
- Easy access to HDD, RAM, Wireless card
- Sound is unrivaled
- fingerprint scanner (for those who use it)
- backlit keyboard
- large sturdy touchscreen with great resolution
- keypad
- easily cleaned
- good fast boot time for an HDD instead of SSD
- rarely heats up and the fan is extremely quite

Cons: - Sometimes the laptop will freeze and refuse to do anything. After removing most of the preinstalled software and disabling some of the start up software, this computer has ran perfect ever since
- the track pad is tricky. I find myself always using a mouse instead of the track pad for most things like games or designing software like photoshop
- touch screen is a magnet for fingerprints but that is to be expected.
- battery life is lack luster lasting me usually 3-4 hours max, but that is what a charger is for.

Other Thoughts: This is simply a great laptop. It has access to the HDD, mSATA, RAM, and Wireless card for easy fixes. The touch screen is a wonderful touch that adds most of the weight to the laptop in my opinion. It is very well built and the sound is unrivaled. I have had this laptop for a month and have not found any problems (beyond the freezing issue due to the preinstalled software like norton). The keyboard is very easy to type on and isnt' too terribly loud. The quite quiet even when playing games or running many intensive programs on it. I have never heard the fan or heat from the computer really blare out. I would highly recommend this computer to anyone.

I got this computer from Newegg refurbished and it is like new. Not a single issue with it. For the price of $700 at the time, it was an oustanding deal! I could not find a better laptop at this price point out there.
