5 out of 5 eggsMagnificent

Pros: Keyboard is most definitely backlit. f5 is your switch. 4x USB 3.0 slots, Fingerprint scanner avoids keylogging (if thats suitable for your use), Great build with solid frame, looks beautiful.

Cons: Only 1 issue for me is the placement of the trackpad is left of center which with 8.1 OS I find myself hitting menus on the right side quite a bit. I use a mouse now and the trackpad less frequently so not worth egg loss.

Other Thoughts: I shopped for 6 weeks looking for the right laptop for entertainment and some work programs and I am absolutely thrilled with this purchase. I've owned it for nearly 6 months now and it hasn't ever given me a reason to not enjoy it. Very nice product!

3 out of 5 eggsActually, NOT a great value despite the CPU and GPU (go fig)

Pros: Yes, it's a reputable brand.
- i7 quad core
- intel 4600 GPU (pretty high for a consumer laptop like this)
- 8GB ram
- $700, plus tax and shipping

Cons: Given these fantastic specs, I thought I'd be happier with the product.

First thing I have to get out of the way: I get a popup from HP every time I log in telling me that this is the wrong AC adapter. Whether it's the right adapter or not (everything was supposedly new out of the box,) the truth of the matter is that the laptop will not charge while I'm using it and it's plugged in. It will discharge, and not charge again until it goes to sleep or I shut it down. So that's a defect, maybe don't hold that against it.

But the real problem is the screen res. IT IS ONLY 1366x768!! That's as low as it gets. It will look bad to you compared to your phone. It'll also look bad to you compared to your OLD laptop, if your old laptop has a smaller screen. I also currently use a $250 Samsung Chromebook, and the screen looks much much better on the Chromebook.

It's not just the low res. There's something else going on too. Just the screen in general seems low-end. When you look at higher end HP's, they also don't look so great compared to competitors with the same res screens, so it may be a brand thing. To my eyes, Samsung and Lenovo have better looking screens given the same screen size and same resolution of comparable HP's.

Another problem is this old fashioned HDD drive. It's not even a combo drive. So, yes, thanks for the high end pro-sumer chip set, but with a slow old HDD, the computer is still going to seem slow. My cheapo Chromebook is much faster (granted that is by design and a Chromebook is not capable of many things a Windows machine can do.)

I am going to return the product. I'm not saying it's terrible, but for $700 I can get another, equally slow computer but with higher res screen, and/or a bigger HD, maybe even a combo hard drive.

But in my case I'm actually not going to do that. Instead I'm going to spend a couple hundred more, and get an "ultrabook" type model. Yes, I'll go down to a lower chip set (often 4th gen i5 and maybe the intel 4000 graphics card) but you get the much better screen (there's a lenovo out now for $1000 with 3200x1800 screen) and you get the solid state drive, which makes all the difference.

Not that it's a HUGE issue, but you also just get a slicker looking product. This HP has cheap-feeling plastic all around it, and it just feels and looks bulky (and it's quite heavy.) I keep my laptops for a long time, generally 4-5 YEARS, so for me it's worth it to get something I'll be really happy with.

Note: the machine is primarily for editing video. I'll also need it to do things that a Chromebook simply cannot do, like use my printer or read every manner of formatted memory.

ps: more cons: BLOATWARE BLOATWARE BLOATWARE! I'm returning it even before bothering with getting it all off.

5 out of 5 eggsLove It

Pros: I love most everything about it. The size and weight are perfect for what I am using it for. I like having the touch screen feature. It was easy set up and I haven't had any problems using it. It does everything I need it to.

Cons: The touch screen is kind of hard to keep clean of finger prints, but a screen protector should solve this problem.
