5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Laptop

Pros: Really fast, pretty cheap, 1080p looks great, need a numeric keypad, looks professional and it's solid as a rock.

Cons: A little heavy, and a little old-school looking.

Other Thoughts: It has some touch-sensitive keys right below the display for Wi-Fi, Mute, Volume up/down, etc. Kind of neat and unexpected.

3 out of 5 eggsLaptop is great, but there were issues

Pros: Despite the issues (see below), it was still a good laptop for the price

Cons: When it arrived the laptop would not charge when connected to the included cord. I took a chance and bought a third party charging cable from a local computer shop. Luckily it was the cable that was the problem and not the computer. Still, not cool.

Second, the specs clearly say that this laptop comes with Win 7 Pro 64-bit, but it has 32-bit. Again, not cool. Being limited to 3GB of RAM is a real bummer.

4 out of 5 eggsCan not beat the price for....

Pros: - You can not beat the price for a 1st Gen I7
- Solid performance
- Great O/S 64Bit OS (pretty much bare which is what I wanted) No extra fluff. Which allows more flexibility to load the software you want not what HP determines is the best fit.
- Shipping was good. But what is interesting is that I purchased a Memory upgrade (8GB) with the laptop. The Laptop was shipped using the Egg Saver (4 - 7) which arrived one day a head of schedule. However, the memory was shipped using snail mail which arrived 3 days later. It would have been great if they both arrived at the same time.
- Condition of the laptop (Good) I did not find and noticeable scratches and dents.

Cons: - The quick launch buttons did not light up or work. I spent sometime on HP's website trouble shooting this issue. I loaded the latest driver and verified the connections under the keyboard. But they just did not work. (This is why I could not give this laptop 5 eggs) The quick launch buttons are not a big deal to me, but it would have been nice to have functional.

Other Thoughts: I am a Systems Engineer so I do PC/ Network support for a living. So it does what I need from a technical perspective.
I am also a Graduate Student so if you are looking for something that can handle research (jstor is your friend) and tons of papers the HP 8540P more than fits the bill.
-I went ahead and upgrade the memory to 8GB for a little more muscle on the processing side. New Egg has a great deal on G.Skill.
- Be prepared to spend some time on Windows Update patching and upgrading the OS. Also I spent a couple of hours on HP's website updating the drivers and flashing the ROM to the latest version.
- Not planning to Upgrade to Windows 8

5 out of 5 eggsLove My "New" Laptop

Pros: Looks great - very solid, masculine and professional. Love the little LED night light that provides subtle but effective lighting on the keyboard for use in the dark.

Compared to my old XP laptop, this thing is blindingly fast.

Cons: Only con was that it was listed as a 32-bit version of Win 7 Pro, and it is in fact 64-bit as it's correctly listed now.

I worked through one round of RMA and replacement and ended up with another 64-bit, so I had to install 32-bit over it and update all the drivers, which was a pain.

But it's working great now and suits my work and home needs perfectly.

I guess a couple of other cons is that it's fairly heavy, and when I hook it up at my desk I don't like having wires coming out of three sides - I wish they were all in the back.

Other Thoughts: I was concerned about getting a refurb, but the signs of prior ownership are VERY slight, like a minor scratch in the upper right-hand corner of the screen that only shows up when the lighting is just so.
