1 out of 5 eggs7 month update

Pros: This is an update from a previous review

Touch screen was fine (when it worked)
Ran decently while it worked.
Sound was noticeably better than on other Laptops
Keyboard layout was nice

Cons: Had issues with the touchscreen not always being recognized at about the 4 month mark. Restarts would usually fix the problem but overall it wasn't a major issue as I used a mouse instead.

What the real kicker now is the laptop will not boot. No bios windows screen, bios, splash screen, nada. After a bit of searching on HPs support site and other forums I was able to narrow down my issue per the blinking caps lock key. Mine is blinking twice, which is indicative of a corrupted Bios failure (according to HP). Tried using their self recovery method of holding the windows key, "b" key, and the power button to recover the bios, again no dice. Obviously the product is out of warranty and HP is more than likely going to charge an arm and a leg with any support. It's unfortunate the kind of gamble it is to buy refurbished.

Other Thoughts: I took a gamble with buying a refurb... from HP... both of which I'm fairly certainly I will not do again.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable Bargain Gaming Laptop

Pros: +Sleek, thin, lightweight
+Looks like a macbook, so your friends will think you spent a lot of dosh
+Very fast for the price
+Runs games smoothly (Metro Last Light ~45fps high, TF2 and L4d2 90 FPS)
+Decent webcam
+Audio sounds very good. Can get much louder than other laptops with higher pricetags.
+Feels like a high quality laptop
+Great specs! 12gb ram, 1 TB memory
+Touchscreen (I don't use it, but hey, it's a perk)
+So cheap!

Cons: -Noisy
-Fans turn on when you close the screen. Requires manually hibernating or shut down
-Lots of bugs, slowness, and glitches before 8.1 upgrade
-League of Legends has performance issues even at lowest settings (30fps in teamfights on very high and very low)
-Performance drops after awakening from sleep mode
-Fingerprint reader sometimes doesn't work on startup
-Short battery life
!!--Qualcomm network card is terrible on some public networks (university networks). Causes lag spikes and ping spikes. Cannot even connect to some public networks

Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop to last me for the rest of my college. Of course in college all you really need is a browser and microsoft office, but I like to know that my computer can handle games as a litmus test. It runs everything sufficiently well. Don't expect this to be the most high end gaming machine in your life, but you will definitely be better off with this machine than most $1000 laptops. The graphics card is technically not dedicated. It borrows from onboard dual channel ram. Keep this in mind.

Any issues that I've run into I've been able to easily fix. Nothing that makes this machine bad. The exception to this is the fact that the Qualcomm Aethros network card does not play nicely with a lot of public networks. If you are attending college and require consistent ping, buy a new network card or an ethernet cable.

I'd also recommend purchasing a cooling mat if you plan on playing games. The heat is emitted on the top left corner, so pads with adjustable fans are best.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Refurb

Pros: -Laptop came and was very clean, no blemishes or scratches
-Nice multitasking, able to bring up and run multiple programs without fuss
-surprisingly quick bootup and program starts. Bootup takes about 20s
- Aluminum body feels high quality
-Speakers are noticeably better than standard laptop speakers and can get very loud. The headphone jack can push an older pair of Sennheiser HD500's with ease.
-HDMI out works flawlessly and produces a nice, artifact free picture (tried on both a 24'' Asus monitor and 52'' Samsung TV)
-5400rpm HDD is also surprisingly quick.
-Screen, although a relatively low resolution has a nice picture after adjustment
-Touchscreen works well when it does work (see cons)
-Fingerprint scanner works well
-Has not gotten hot to the touch
-Keyboard backlight illuminates well

Cons: Windows 8 is certainly something to get used to. Make sure ALL of your windows 8 updates are done BEFORE you upgrade to 8.1, otherwise the upgrade will not work.
- Touchscreen driver goes bye bye after waking up from sleep. I have not found a solution to this other than putting the computer into hibernate mode instead. That said, upon startup or wakeup from hibernating, the screen works flawlessly.
-Some HP bloatware and McAffee to uninstall
-Fan can get loud
- Needs a 32gb flashdrive to make an external backup from partition on disk.

Other Thoughts: The way to right-click with the mousepad is to hold the mouspad down for 2-3 seconds and release. That will bring up your right-click options.

-Overall, this was chosen for the amount of power and upgradability you get for $500. Despite being a refurb, it has performed admirably. I would definitely purchase a refurb from HP again.

1 out of 5 eggsTRASH!!!!

Pros: N/A

Cons: Computer turned on initally out of the box, when I came home from work the next day, it was off and would not turn on. Not sure if it is the battery or the power connector, but relying on NewEgg for support is pointless, as once your card goes thru they wash their hands of the garbage that they sell you. I had my product delivered thru a Army Post Office address on my post overseas so by the time I received the product the 'warranty' was already expired. This is a boarderline scam in my opinion. This website, at least for Refurbished items seems to be a fancy way of buying items from a guy off the street. I suppose that is my fault for rolling the dice on a refurb, so screw me. Save yourself the headache and by directly from HP and buy new.

Other Thoughts: I had to give it one star to post, but it has to be zero because the computer is a useless paperweight...

5 out of 5 eggsSweet!!

Pros: Beautiful laptop, Touchscreen, light, Windows 8 has the ability to mount .iso images so no need for an optical drive any longer, USB 3.0 is slick, HDMI, super simple set up, Beats Audio sounds better once you update the drivers, SD Card reader, HD and RAM are behind the same piece of plastic making it easy to upgrade/replace. Has 2 slots for RAM with an 8GB and a 4GB card so you could upgrade it to 16GB of RAM easily.

Cons: Needing to apply plenty of updates which is annoying but that comes with compatibility of software and of course adding security or increasing performance

Other Thoughts: Pulled the 1TB hard drive out and put in a 240SSD in to improve battery and performance. I would strongly reccomend it.

5 out of 5 eggsJust an addition

Pros: I have already reviewed this laptop once when I initially received it. I just waned to add a few things that I have learned about this laptop since then.

-About a week ago I fell asleep in my bunk bed while watching youtube videos on this laptop. I woke up in horror of it falling to the floor hitting my ladder and chair before finally resting on the floor. The screen had come loose and I pushed it back into place. It booted up fine with no damage to the screen or case. It did not even have a scratch or dent from a 5-6 foot drop! I am very impressed with the durability.

Cons: Again this is an updated review to look at my previous review for more details

-I hate that the track pad does not have dedicated left and right buttons. When I try to click it moves the mouse because the button is the track pad! many companies are doing this now and is is a terrible design. I hope they stop this. Luckily it has a touch screen to I just touch what ever needs clicking so I didn't not take an egg off. It is annoying but its not a deal breaker.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Machine -

Pros: Nice features, good power, good capacity, easy to use.

Cons: Sound is not as advertised, very standard for a laptop.

Other Thoughts: Windows 8 is a bit of a bear to learn but once you know what the down arrow is for on the start screen, things become easier. Shutting down some program is a bit of a mystery. The game offer is a joke, none are available at this time to download. Huh?

1 out of 5 eggsDid not work on delivery!

Pros: Don't know, it never started.

Cons: This unit never even started up. I am wondering if it had any quality control at all before it left the factory. It cost me time and money. I will not be buying any refurbished equipment from Newegg again. I had to send it back to HP and am currently awaiting for it to return.

4 out of 5 eggsNice computer for the price

Pros: 12GBs of Memory/Memory usage in general
1TB HDD
Price
Screen Display very nice for images
Backlit Keyboard
All of the ports work and do what they're designed to do.

Cons: Beats Audio is garbage/ the speakers suck. Purchased a separate Bluetooth speaker that delivered a better quality sound
For not having an optical CD drive the PC is a lot heavier than it should be. The pictures advertised are deceptive to make you think the PC looks like an ultrabook but the heaviness towards the back of the PC makes me feel like I'm going to break it I pick it up from the areas surrounding the trackpad.
Fan is loud- changed to PowerSave, you notice what programs will make the fan run loud. Installed SpeedFan to help with this problem.
PC does heats up(which I hear is a problem with the Envy line) mainly around the fans. Haven't had to use a cooling fan yet.
I still haven't figured out why my external hard drive still spins on this PC after it has been shut down.

Other Thoughts: Make sure to update your drivers frequently even check AMD's website. HD videos were hard to watch at first then I had to update the HD driver from HP and then I was able to watch HD movies the way they were intended. Overall I'm happy with this PC, I shopped around after to see if there were other PCs within the same price range for the features and I could not find anything. Definitely for the money you can't beat it. Hope that helps
