1 out of 5 eggs4 out of 8 BAD

Pros: Specs, 4:3 screen, BIOS options.

Cons: I've had to send so many back due to bad RAM, Bad Motherboard, Bad Screen, Bad Optical Drive, and bad batteries. I couldn't even configure with all the parts available with the 8 laptops, 5 working laptops, and only 2 came working as is.

I'm writing this as I wait to discuss my options to deal with the third laptop replacement that has failed. I suspect I will have to just purchase a battery separate as I am not taking a 50/50 gamble as to whether the next battery will work. They also have 1.8" 4200rpm HDDs.

Other Thoughts: I spent lots of money shipping overnight and we are still without working laptops. These are junk, and unless you want to spend hours with New Egg customer service, shipping laptops back and forth, and going weeks without functional laptops, pick these.

4 out of 5 eggsGood value | No Win7-64 webcam driver

Pros: This laptop, as another person mentioned, can take a beating. It looks good with the polished metal lid, and has soft keys for a number of different functions. There is hardly any software installed on it, which is both a pro and a con (I'll get to that), and it has ports for RJ11, Smart Cards, RJ45 (standard ethernet), ExpressCard34, Docking connector, a security cable, DisplayPort, VGA, 1394 (FireWire), SD Card, and 3 USB. It also includes a built-in keyboard light for typing in low-light conditions.

Cons: First, Microsoft Office is not included. OpenOffice 4 is, and it works well for a replacement. There are some minor compatibility issues with .docx files if one needs to print a sign-up sheet or something of that sort. The spacing is just off, and the lines one so carefully made to cross the whole page and stop will be just a few characters too long. So, if you are planning to do a lot of this, or make use of Excel macros (they aren't supported), I would make sure to pick up a copy of MOffice. Other than this, OOffice makes a good replacement.

The biggest headache that I have experienced is getting the webcam to work. This has been THE issue for others with this laptop, and it consists simply of the driver seemingly not existing for 64-bit Windows 7. After a few hours of searching and a lengthy post toward HP, I live-booted Ubuntu for fun, and discovered that the universal drivers included with it work for the webcam. I promptly installed it alongside Windows 7, and am happy.

Other Thoughts: I am able to play games on it; Civ V runs at medium to low graphics; the 4GB of RAM are maxed out. Switching one of the 2GB modules to 4GB should improve performance.

I recommend this laptop.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Looks great on paper. The processor is nice. Has a pretty good HDD. Runs pretty fast overall. The i7 with the integrated graphics makes for a pretty nice display. The outer body was in good shape and the chrome is pretty.

Cons: The battery is rubbish. I got it out of the box, powered it up and found the battery was faulty. The battery indicator light won't light up. It says 0% Not Charging on the read on the taskbar. I've tried a dozen different fixes I have found online with no success. HP's battery troublesooting software saysthe first cell in the battery is burned out. Immediately contacted support and they got me a replacement. Opened the second one to find it had the exact same problem. It's not worth my time to try for a second replacement at the moment so I'm stuck with a laptop that requires being plugged in to function.

Other Thoughts: Perhaps testing the batteries should be a part of inspecting the refurbished models before sale to ensure they actually work.

1 out of 5 eggsBEWARE! Only 2 out of 5 Work.

Pros: 4:3 display. Optical drive even with it's size. Lots of BIOS options.

Cons: 3 out of the 5 I ordered had batteries that would not charge. I tried the bad batteries in functional laptops with different adapters.
1 of the 5 laptops was so beat up the screen was cracked and all bent out of shape. This on top of a plethora of dents, scrapes, worn out paint.
1 of the 5 laptops had bad RAM.
1 of the 5 laptops must have a motherboard issue as the HDD would sometimes not even show in BIOS. Other times it would. Tried with multiple none working HDDs.
1.8 4200rpm HDDs. Makes for expensive and limited upgrade options.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little unit

Pros: Small, portable, powerful enough for pretty much any mobile need other than gaming. Comes with very little useless software on it.

Cons: Could use a little more memory. Hard drive is microscopic. It's a few years old and shows it. But remember, this was top of the line just a few years ago.

Other Thoughts: All in all, it's a great little unit; for just a couple of hundred dollars it is small, light, very portable and powerful enough for what I need it to do.

2 out of 5 eggsBEWARE!!! 1.8" HDD!!

Pros: Inexpensive, small, optical drive, i7.

Cons: 1.8" 4200rpm HDD. This makes for very limited SSD upgrade options. This also make SSD upgrades more expensive.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It's a great little machine if you want something Old School, solid and indestructible with lots of features. Being a touch typist I appreciated the keyboard. Has a lot of stuff for such a little unit. Good battery life.

Cons: It was built to military specs so I guess I'm not surprised that it is a bit of a tank. That could be in it's favor depending on what you bought it for. I"m finding the 12" screen a bit small for my old eyes. It arrived a bit more worn, scratched and dented than I had anticipated. I've been pretty lucky in the past I guess.

5 out of 5 eggsA steal

Pros: Wow this is a steal. I was hesitant about buying a refurb. But mine came today and it looks almost new. It's very clean with just some minor blemishes. Windows installed upon start up with a fresh install like it was new. Very quick and easy.

I was also a little leery about buying something a few years old as far as hardware speed goes. But this laptop was basically top notch a few years ago and very expensive. The thing is the newer ones aren't all that much better these days. The newer expensive and top laptops are a little faster, a little more memory that you probably won't use, a little better battery life. Actually the battery life is pretty awesome on this. Only a little better, not leagues better. You probably won't even notice any difference while using this compared to a brand new lap top that just came out. (except if it has an SSD).

so yeah only thing I'd say is that you'd want to upgrade to an SSD. Although I'm actually surprised how fast the hard drive on this is. I was expecting it to be really slow.

If you bought a brand new lap top today you will get junk at this price. Even double this price it's not going to be as good as this or built as well. This is built like a tank but still very portable.

I love the size too. It's just right. Easy to carry, powerful, long battery life. I'm very happy. I should be able to keep this for a very very long time. Since all the newer hardware is leaning more toward longer battery life and cooler running instead of outright speed. And operating systems and software are being made to run on weaker tablets and phones. This laptop is much more powerful than any tablet. With lots of connections. 3 usb and the displayport out is great. I'll have to get an HDMI adapter for the displayport but that's fine.

You really can't lose at this price.

Cons: HDMI would be nice but displayport is great, just need an adapter if you only have HDMI

SSD would be the only thing I'd want to add. But the HDD is plenty quick actually.
