4 out of 5 eggsHP Envy 15

Pros: -Amazing build quality, feels similar to a macbook, with the top being metal and bottom plastic. Very thin and surprisingly much higher quality than the brand new hp envy laptops I saw at a popular electronics store over the past weekend. Also has a back lit keyboard which lets me use this thing with ease in the dark. Looked brand new when I opened the box. Also noticed this was a refurb from HP themselves with a 90 day warranty,

-Great sound! the speaker is nice and loud and the beats software lets you tweak the sound.

-1080p resolution and 12gb of ram were the main reason I bought this laptop. Everything looks beautiful and crisp + runs nice and smooth. I can multitask and have 20 windows open with no slowdown.

-was also surprised to find out I can play Counter Strike: GO on this thing with no major issues on medium settings and 1920x1080 resolution and 40-60 fps

-Best deal I could find for the specs, so far so good and have had this thing for 3 weeks with no issues.

Cons: -Windows 8.1 but I'm getting used to it and it's not as bad as I thought it was. No chance of installing win 7 because of touchscreen and drivers issues

--Touchscreen is a cool feature but don't use it much since this screen tends to get a tiny bit dirty even without touching it!

-HP Bloatware taking up good resources.

Other Thoughts: Overall surprised and very happy with this purchase. As of writing this it is sold out and happy I got mine while I had the chance!

5 out of 5 eggsVery satisfied

Pros: Back lit keyboard, The processor and integrated graphics are surprisingly capable for medium gaming and running adobe software, 12GB Ram is awesome! Don't hate me, but for personal use I have started to enjoy windows 8 w/ the touch screen. Overall look is great I've bought refurbs before and have been a little disappointed but there has been no buyers remorse with this purchase so far. It looked brand new when I removed it from the packaging and I have had no issues with it thus far. It feels pretty solid and has a nice sleek look to it, very similar to the macbook. Almost forgot to mention all four usb ports are usb 3.0.

Cons: Like many others have said the screen is a smudge magnet. While the display is on you don't really notice the smudges, however the screen is so glossy that glare is a pretty common issue. Battery life is not amazing but it will get me through a couple of classes usually 3-4 hours on powersave mode. The thing that really bugs me the most is the placement of the power cable port. it is on the side and the plug makes a 90 degree turn and ends up being a little awkward as the ethernet and usb ports are right next to it. Lastly this came with windows 8 enterprise, which means you will not be able to update to windows 8.1 for free from the app store.

Other Thoughts: Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase, I can do some gaming, work in adobe indesign/illustrator and the machine runs great. The refurb had me worried but everything looked fantastic. I signed up for the 30 day shoprunner trial just in case it was damaged and when I went to cancel they offered me a 90 day free trial, which I think is the length of the warranty and they cover return shipping. All in all I am a happy camper

4 out of 5 eggsGood Deal

Pros: 12gb RAM, AMD A10, and cheap price. Touchscreen (If that is what you want). 1080p screen. Great speakers and webcam.

Cons: Screen is like a mirror and attracts smudges, turn your brightness up to get minimum reflection.

Other Thoughts: Has some horsepower, I can run Civilization 5, War Thunder, and World of Tanks on low/med graphics on 40-50 fps

4 out of 5 eggsI Love It!

Pros: The specs themselves are a majority of it. This is a steal, for the price of the machine, versus others which are out here.

HP always makes great devices.

Cons: WIndows 8.1. This has to be the biggest, not so hateful, but irritating thing on the laptop. I am used to XP and Windows-7.

Whenever you first turn on the machine. You have to use the slide-up on the touch-screen to log in. DO NOT SLIDE THE TOUCHPAD! I normally do not use caps, but this needed to be emphasized. As it will force your computer to do a reboot giving a, "Invalid_Attachment_Process" warning with HP's blue frownie face of death.

Other Thoughts: Going from a regular UI(user-interface) to a touch-supported machine was a major jump. But this can be said about buying any new device. It just takes time to adapt.

I love HP. My previous laptop was an HP-Compaq Presario with Vista on it. The machine still works, but since I am in college, I was in want of a newer-more recent specification laptop.

I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a nice laptop. I also recommend buying the 1-year extension of warranty, as it will be useful, since the machines are refurbished.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty good so far!

Pros: - long battery life (4 hours on normal surfing, 1hour and half in game)
- backlit keyboard is very beautiful
- gaming experience is good so far (tried with portal 2, guns of icarus and bf3 with medium setting)
-finger print reader is accurate and work well
-touch screen could be a little more precise but it's still very good
-the keyboard feel amazing
-very thin but look solid

Cons: -the touch screen have a "glossy" effect but that's what you have to expect from a touchscreen (you will need a higher brightness if you don't want to see yourself on your screen, imagine your smartphone x2)
-Not a con but don't forget this copy of windows is in english. Sure you can install a language pack but it's not perfect.

Other Thoughts: It's a good product if you want to surf on the web, gaming for current gen games at medium setting. do some photoshop (12 gig is really appreciate for that) and some video editing. It's fast and do what you want him to do. personally, for someone who never had a touchscreen on a laptop, i found it really addictive, especially with windows store app and games.
Don't let the Refurbished sign stop you, it's great and have the best quality/price for this category of computer

4 out of 5 eggsHP Envy 15-J173CL

Pros: Best specs around the price range

Very pleasing to look at. It's thin, light and portable.

Fast Processor

12GB ram

1 TB of HDD

Dedicated ATI 8xxxx gfx card. Runs at better resolution in games then Inel counter parts.

Good quality webcam (720p according to the specs)
Much better quality of touchscreen and has 1080p instead of 768p of usual touch screen laptops

Speakers. Not a fan of beats audio but stock speakers work surprisingly well.

All newer ports available (plenty of usb3, hdmi)

Good placement on the card reader

Back lit keyboard.

Cons: It's HP.

Finger print scanner is a joke which is sad because I paid more for it and it doesn't work on Windows 8.1 even though they said that it would. HP won't fix it even when the issue is over 6 months old. It's all over the internet. Google simple pass won't work on Windows 8.1

Sub Par keyboard.
Back Lit keyboard's LED isn't very bright. Left side and center of keyboard isn't as firm as the right side and feels very flimsy.

UEFI mode in BIOS won't recognize my new 256GB Crucial SSD and I have to go into Legacy Mode.

Touchscreen is VERY glossy which means it's reflection magnet.

No Bluetooth

Other Thoughts: Over all, it's a fantastic laptop.

It's not perfect but to me Pros outweigh the Cons and I won't be able to find this type of spec around $500 range. So I will be keeping this laptop.

Just keep in mind of all the cons that I have posted and see if those will be deal breakers for you.

Newegg sent this model in pristine condition.
Kudos Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsfast 'n loose

Pros: smart, lean, and extremely flexible
fingerprint scanner surprisingly handy
backlit keyboard closes the deal

Cons: no bluetooth, no pouch

Other Thoughts: (I own the one with the 1366x768 screen otherwise identical j073cl)

After wiping and installing Windows 8.1 cleanly with catalyst 14.7rc, I have fallen in love with this thing. Its my first portable computer and I'm old, nothing ever had the horsepower as compared to my desktops within a respectable price range, for me.

Its very fast, sitting on the table in a warm room its holding around 3.15GHz maxxed with no issues, and the power brick doesn't seem to be overworked at all either. Underside belly will heat up when working hard, seems to be where the RAM is, cooling pad should allow this thing to burn full out for years.

I'm not sure I like the shell. Its not metal but rather some kind of thin brittle plastic with some kind of metallic paint covering. I get the feeling there is a serious metal chassis underneath by the weight. The surface is gritty, has a sheen, and attracts filth, yet it cleans up easy enough and also seems to be tough. A few times I banged it yet kind find a mark.

Everything just works, and well. The machine is a joy to use and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for more than your average notebook for a respectable price.

5 out of 5 eggsA steal for the price

Pros: -Really thin.
-Solid design.
-I'm not a fan of Beats, but the speaker system in the laptop is better than I expected.
-Somehow (probably the HP Coolsense software) it does not burn the heck out of my legs, and it actually stays pretty cool.
-The APU is pretty freaking sweet. I have installed a bunch of Steam games on it and haven't found anything that it really struggles with.
-The keyboard back-light is sweet. I'd like to see this in more laptops.
-The touchscreen is a nice feature in conjunction with Windows 8/8.1.
-12 Gigs of ram in a laptop is flipping sweet.
-Lots of regular sized ports.
-The cooling is much better than HP's I've had in the past.
-Great laptop for the money.
-No issues with refurbished.

Cons: -The keyboard is a stereotypical laptop chick-let keyboard.
-It's HP.
-The battery life is not as great as I'd like, but that's a modern laptop for you. (2 - 4 hours depending on use.)
-Because of the screen it's slightly top heavy, not really a con though.
-HDD was really slow. Replaced with SSD and external HDD enclosure.
-Had to do a clean install of Windows to get rid of HP bloatware.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure if other users are running into a quality control issue, but the unit I received is great. I just stepped up from a Lenovo twist (i5, 4GB RAM) so this is a massive boost.

1 out of 5 eggsToo good to be true

Pros: It has a 1920 by 1080 screen. After reinstalling Windows 8.1 and removing all the HP bloatware junk it ran halfway decent. Sound is great. Keyboard layout was very comfortable, one of the better laptop keyboards. No problems connecting to Wi-Fi.

Cons: The colors are way off. HP screens are famous for their bad yellows, and this one has by the worst screen color of any laptop. The screen is glossy and a fingerprint magnet. You will be cleaning smudges off this thing every second. Despite all the RAM and processor speed, this thing is very slow. Had to remove bloatware to even make it run functionally. Pathetic when the Acer C720 Chromebook operates faster than this thing. Also, very, very heavy. And battery life is miserable at 2-3 hours.

Other Thoughts: The refurbished model I got had nothing but problems. The "T" button on the keyboard wouldn't register all the time, touchscreen would stop once in a while, and the audio would just stop from time to time. Both of the latter issues required a restart to fix.

Seriously, if you want a budget laptop for $500, get that black ASUS refurbished model. The keyboard is lacking on that laptop but the performance and screen is top-notch compared to this junk.
