2 out of 5 eggsThere are far better alternatives...

Pros: Very small, quite inexpensive, 30gb hd is larger than competition, easier to install operating systems and programs on than competition (in some cases the hard drive as apposed to the flash memory of Asus' EEE PC is less problematic for a few different programs).

Cons: Unit becomes very hot very quickly. Small and portable meets burning hot within a short amount of time. EXTREMELY SLOW (and worse when it heats up, which won't take it long). CPU clocks at 1.2 if I'm not mistaken, but compared to an intel, this thing is far slower. Hard drive is NOT 4200 RPMs like the box says, it is 3600 RPMs. This might not sound like a huge issue. It is. I've never seen Windows XP stutter so bad, all because of that weak hard drive. Upgrading pretty much anything voids the warranty (and I had to upgrade ram for my work). The operating system that comes with the device is embarrassing, and Everex doesn't even include drivers for the graphics card on gOS (nor are there any) so effects and features of the operating system are either disabled or have horribly, glitchy results. I bet you'd figure the wireless would have to be decent for all of its short comings. The wireless is so pathetic I couldn't stand across the room with the router and get internet.

Other Thoughts: Unit will no longer power on and since I've upgraded the RAM and voided the warranty, Everex wants to charge me. "Send it in and we'll tell you how much its going to cost, if you change your mind you have to pay us $40 to send it back."

Worst laptop experience EVER.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price

Pros: Small, decent battery life for its size, 30GB hard drive, 1.2GHz processor (almost faster than my desktop). Solid construction that has endured numerous bumps and scrapes.

Cons: The processor, although 1.2GHz, is slow. Hard drive? Slow. gOS? It sucks. Want to ad a gig of memory? WARRANTY VOIDED! Want to put XP on it? WARRANTY VOIDED (even though they provide the drivers for you on their site).

Other Thoughts: For the price, I bought this instead of an EEE. I don't regret it, as putting XP on it was much easier, but now I have no warranty, and I had to disassemble the entire bottom of the unit to ad a gig of ram.

Everex needs to stop voiding warranties for things that owners are doing to IMPROVE the products. Asus was quick to realize this.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect little unit

Pros: works perfectly with windows XP. Best portsable device I have ever owned. Wireless range is perfect. Unit runs cool. All good when using XP
Since everything is VIA and designed to work together this unit runs very well. I can watch high quality video, listen to music, make docs and run google earth . To load XP just get a IDE to USB adaptor for a cdrom 5.25 drive. Plug in and reboot. The USB port is automatically detected as a boot drive.

Cons: The Gos operating system uses too many resources and the wireless stinks in Gos. Dump GoS and you are good to go

Other Thoughts: Everex could have been real succesfull with this if it used a better linux distro

5 out of 5 eggsCloud Book - Flame on

Pros: This UMPC is an exceptional machine. I upgraded the OS through Win 2000: then Upgraded Win 2000 with an XP Pro upgrade on top of that. Totally unfamiliar with native OS so I changed it. I had no problems with web cam, touch pad, mouse buttons, nor wi-fi. XP drivers were easilly located on Everex web site. Battery life is great: 3 1/2 with wi-fi. Wi-fi alright indoors 40 ft from Linksys 54G AP The screen is small but viewable with res 800x600. Screen rotates to portrait so its like an eBook, great for viewing web pages.

Cons: No cons for me. I purchased my machine early April. I suggest that owners allow their machine to fully boot before attempting to open other programs.

Other Thoughts: I used the arrow keys to manuver when screen's in portrait orientation. Outside, downtown I was unable to connect to Concord's free wireless AP (MetroFree). I havent tried coffee shop's APs yet. The native resolution 800x480, I ignor for custom 800x600. When in portrait the resolution automatically changed to 768x1024 with 8 bit.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's real small

Pros: Reliable, Small, all the women tell me it's cute, that's a plus. The WiFi has been the easiest I've ever done. Writing review on it.

Cons: It's small, I'm a big man so the keyboard was a bit tricky to get use to. Use the alt key and the right mouse button to move the screen around.

Other Thoughts: Order usb wireless mouse with the system if you don't already have one. Download restore cd or usb file first so you can restore itif you have to doesn't come with one. UK sell a cloud book with windows XP on it preinstalled by packard bell Utube have a video review on it. Boring reveiw.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks As Expected

Pros: Extremely portable. Good battery life. WiFi+Wired LAN. Pre-installed with almost everything needed. Simple-enough setup (if you can see all the buttons). Recognizes all peripherals installed via USB (thumb drives, mice, HDDs, etc...). Built-in SD slot. Camera + stereo speakers & microphones.

Cons: 800x480 resolution is too small for some dialogs (as mentioned) including the time-zone dialog that is displayed at initial boot-up. Linux+Gnome has a heck of a learning curve for the un-initiated.

Other Thoughts: Basic setup is simple right out of the box (Wireless LAN, etc...). I was expecting the small keyboard, so no biggie. I wasn't expecting a 3-month delay and to still have problems with the interface being too big for the display. I'm keeping gOS since I can do everything (IM, Web, Documents, etc...) with the pre-installed appps. There are many linux games that run on this guy as well (if you can stand the low resolution). Perfect little computer to use just about everywhere.

3 out of 5 eggsHardware's great, software sucks

Pros: Very small, and relatively cheap. Very light. 30 gigs of storage is a nice step up from the competition at a similar price point. Windows drivers available. 3+ hour run time.

Cons: gOS was not optimized at all for 800x480 (other than setting the default resolution). Dialogue boxes don't fit on the screen, can't read the google toolbar agreement, 50% of firefox display is consumed by toolbars. Gives Linux and Everex a bad name. Additionally, no widescreen resolutions above 1000x600 are supported on the DVI port. WTH[eck]?!? The only displays that can benefit the port are flat panels and most of those are 16:10 or 16:9. So either dig up an old 4:3 panel with a DVI port or use a VGA adapter with a CRT. Totally defeats the purpose of having a DVI port.

Other Thoughts: This product shouldn't have been released with this gOS distribution in its current state. Everex should have taken another quarter or two to do it right and clean up the interface so it works well on the small screen even if that meant launching simultaneously with the "max" version. I'd say the early adopters got stuck as beta testers but this isn't even alpha. When the first dialogue box the user sees doesn't fit on the screen, it ain't done yet. Also the hard drive is NOT 4200 RPM. It's 3600. I'm sure that has a lot to do with the sluggish startup. I give the hardware 4 stars and the software 2 stars. Newegg, as usual rocks. Ordered Thursday, delivered Friday.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat 'portable' PC

Pros: Size/Weight
Easy to install XP/Office with ext DVD/CD player
Impressed with screen resolution.
Storage (HD vs 4/8G on the eepc) - need for programs and files.

Cons: gOS is terrible
keyboard can be cramped - don't expect to touch type very fast/long on it
Keyboard flexes somewhat.
Only 2 USB port
DVI instead of VGA port (my work projectors are VGA)

Other Thoughts: Like Jaffrey, I got my for the same deal. Got it 2 days after I placed my order (live in the midwest). Newegg rocks (would have been sweet deal if free ship).
Installed XP Prof SP2 without a hitch with an external DVD drive. There are ways without one but it was too complicated for me. Loaded up all the drivers on Everex's website and they all seem to work fine. The only thing with the video is that it stretches things out a bit. Doesnt seem proportional. I installed VLCportable video player and played a MP4 movie file and it ran pretty smoothly without a hiccup. There are alot of bad reviews of this from but obviously none of them have one. I also installed Office 2007 and so far it seems to run ok. I have not done any fancy powerpoint or excel spreadsheets yet to assess the processing power.

What to expect - its not a speed demon by any means, therefore do not set your expectations high and you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 eggsWicked little machine.

Pros: Compact, nice design, easy to stash in a backpack along with books.

Cons: Runs a bit warm after a while.

Other Thoughts: Bought this for $349 last week. Had a shipping problem, but after a little coaxing, Newegg took care of it.

If you're a student like I am, this is a great little machine to take along for the day. It weighs about 2 pounds, and seems to get about 4 hours out of the battery.

4 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Small and light. 30 gig hd, furnished software (it has chess), and from the looks it is built to last. Only time will tell.

Cons: Wifi is very weak. I have only 73% signal 5 feet from my router. It works all over the house at about 50% so that's ok, but I would doubt it has much range which would be bad if you're a heavy wifi user. (see below for a fix) Also, no extra batteries are available to date.

Other Thoughts: If the battery goes below a certain % it just stops. No warning so beware. I would not recommend this machine to weak computer users because of the operating system. I have Ubuntu on one of my computers so it was easy for me to set up and use. Google cloudbooker for a site with mostly geeks to see what they say. For example the wifi can be fixed by using a usb one with an antenna. The operating system can be changed to other distros, or XP. I think one guy installed Vista, but I don't see it working very well on this little jewel. Well worth the money since my Palm TX cost around 300 bucks if memory serves me, and it is, in my opinion, a piece of pure junk. I hate Palm.
