3 out of 5 eggsGreat tablet, defective screen

Pros: Tablet is very quick. Apps load quick and the touch screen is very responsive.

Cons: If screen gets oily (it's the kid's tablet), the touchscreen is wildly inaccurate. First tablet had an area about the size of thumbnail that was messed up. Not sure how to explain it, but it was like an oil spot on it, but under the glass.

Other Thoughts: If you get a tablet in good condition, it is 5 eggs. So if defective tablets get 3 eggs, everyone researching this will be able to assess how likely it is to receive a good tablet. If my experience is an outlier, than my low score won't tarnish the overall score.

1 out of 5 eggsSave your box!!! Dell Customer Service Awful

Pros: Was cheap on sale on Cyber Monday. Isn't a lot slower than the Nexus 7 first generation.

Cons: Tablet failed halfway through a charging session. It just stopped charging, and locked up, when we tried to enter our code in the log in screen. It doesn't function at all.

I don't know if it ever had a "service tag" sticker on it, but it doesn't now. Dell Customer service has disconnected me twice while I was on the phone with tech support. I wasn't rude, and I was calm the entire call. They are refusing to troubleshoot, or to give me information to return the table, without this so called "service tag" number.

I plan to never buy another Dell product. It's clear they've created a return process so cumbersome, as to deter us from using it. This is not a company I want anything to do with.

Other Thoughts: Save your box, so that when this tablet fails to power on, you can send it back to newegg for a refund or replacement.

2 out of 5 eggsInitial Failure

Pros: Nice tablet for the price.

Cons: Initial failure, poor customer support from Dell.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my daughter for Christmas. It did not work at all. The power button did not work. It would charge, but that's about it. It seems like that's something they might want to check at the factory before shipping it out.

Dell tech support has been difficult to work with. When I initially called, I was on hold on hold 80 minutes. They said I should "let it charge 6 to 8 hours." I pointed out that it was already charged 100%. I was told that it has to charge 6 to 8 hours when it is new. (The downloadable manual suggests 4 hours, the quick start guide does not say anything about charging.)

They did send a new one, but it has been a fair degree of hassle getting the new one and the old one sent back. Hassles have included being given contradictory information, being given phone numbers to call that do not work (this one was on a letter wondering why I hadn't sent the broken one back, even though I'd been trying to get an authorization from them), having emails and messages ignored, etc. In fact, UPS says they received the old one a week ago, and I still cannot get anyone at Dell to verify that they have it.

My daughter loves her tablet, and it has been perfectly adequate for her purposes. Just keep in mind that 'Dude, you're getting a Dell.' It does not appear that their quality control is very good, given that they didn't notice that the power button didn't work. And with a Dell comes subpar customer service if you do have a problem.

4 out of 5 eggsNice tablet for everyday use

Pros: Lightweight, responsive, decent screen, expandable storage (increasingly rare), comfortable to hold, pure android experience, excellent sound w/head gear, low price point, looks nice.

Cons: Horrible cameras, so-so mono speaker, screen is a fingerprint magnet (more so than other tablets); auto brightness too dim in most situations; best left disabled.

Other Thoughts: I own several 7" tablets form Acer, Ama!zon, HiSense and Nexus. Make no mistake this is no Nexus 2013 or Kindle HDX. That said the Venue 7 has been a refreshing surprise. It is more responsive than most especially with multiple applications/tabs open (credit 2G memory & possibly Intel CPU). Transitions are nearly instantaneous with no jerkiness or artifacts. Much has been made of the lower resolution screen but 1280x800 IPS is more than adequate on a 7" slab IMHO. While sufficiently bright it does seem to consume more power than comparables at a given level (subjective). Colors are vibrant but not quite as saturated as on the Kindle HD. Off angle viewing is good (not great). Standby battery life is excellent with draw down <1% per hour. I get about 6 hours of steady use indoors (25% brightness). Video/audio playback has been flawless and is especially nice when listening with earbuds. The internal speaker is acceptable for quick clips, podcasts, etc. The raised power and volume buttons are easy to find but susceptible to accidental presses. Charges quickly; included cube is rated at 2A. No problems with WiFi connectivity in the various locations I frequent. This has become my go-to tablet for everyday use given weight, responsiveness and relatively low investment should it take an untimely dive. Dell makes no claims about screen durability so I assume it won't take much abuse. I just received the promised Android 4.2.2 -> 4.3 update; self installed without incident in about 15 min. Nice.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Screen resolution
Build quality
Dual core CPU
2gb ram
16g storage
Fast and responsive
Fast internet
Long battery life
Overall a fantastic tablet for $120

Cons: Nothing so far

Other Thoughts: People who give it a lower rating are computer illiterate. This is the best $120 tablet out there. Comes with new egg's return policy.

1 out of 5 eggsInitial Failure

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Doesn't work.

Other Thoughts: Bought it for my daughter for Christmas. It does not work at all. I think the power button is not working. It seems like that's something they might want to check at the factory before shipping it out.

Dell tech support was pretty unhelpful. After being on hold 80 minutes they said I should "let it charge 6 to 8 hours," and said they will call tomorrow to see if that helps. I pointed out that it is already charged 100%. "That does not matter. These have to charge 6 to 8 hours when they are new." (Might want to include that tidbid in the manual. The downloadable manual suggests 4 hours, the quick start guide does not say anything about charging.)

Probably not fair to leave a poor review over an initial failure, but it is Christmas, my daughter does not have her main gift, and I am annoyed. I'll likely update later.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet little tablet

Pros: This tablet is a great little tablet. I haven't had it long so I haven't had the chance to install/run any major apps but I'm impressed. Its a quick little tablet. The touch screen is really responsive. The display looks great. It also didn't come with too much bloatware which is surprising considering its a dell.

Cons: The cons are kind of weak to be honest. The camera could be better....(its a tablets quit complaining, if you want a better camera.....buy a camera.) The device is brand new and it doesn't have a bunch of accessories available for it yet.....to be honest this wasn't a deal breaker for me because I'm not one to buy 3 different cases for a device and a 5 pack of screen protectors. However, I can see how that could be a major downside for some people.

Other Thoughts: Its a very nice little tablet that will meet the needs of most users. Its quick and responsive and perfect for anyone wanting an entry level tablet. At the price ($109 on sale)........its a great deal.

5 out of 5 eggsVenue 7

Pros: Everything so far has been a pro. Good battery life, good sound with headphones, easy set up and all apps have worked with no probs.

Cons: Nothing so far, but will update if I encounter any.

Other Thoughts: Not many cases out for it yet, but screen protectors are easily found.
