4 out of 5 eggsReview 2

Pros: Still working flawlessly after 8 months of use. Purchased in December of 2012, and it's still working great today! Has a slot for an mSATA drive, as well as a 2.5" laptop drive. Note* requires a slim 7mm drive, not the standard 9.5mm notebook drive. Still, VERY COOL that such a small laptop will support using 2 hard drives (1xmSATA and 1x2.5" notebook drive)

Cons: Trackpad is not the best quality, works well enough but is sometimes unpredictable. Keyboard keys are not very sensitive and sometimes miss letters as I tpe thm.

WiFi chip connects at a maximum of 150Mbps. I bought an intel WiFi chip to upgrade it to support 300Mbps connection speed and got a BIOS error message saying "Incompatible wireless card installed". Apparently the BIOS won't recognize any wifi chip except the model that came with this laptop.

Other Thoughts: Some people say it's great for light gaming. I disagree. Even on lowest settings it struggles to play most games. Sanctum and Left 4 Dead 2 are the only games I attempted to run, and it was sad. The only game I play on this laptop now is Age of Empires II HD. Very basic games will run fine.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Laptop

Pros: GREAT keyboard
Good Looking
Fast CPU
Very thin and light
USB 3.0
Fairly good gaming performance
Very much like a macbook Air or other ultrabook, but better for gaming.

Cons: Touchpad sensitivity may need to be increased
Steam has trouble with openGL direct-injection under 64-bit linux
Battery life is only decent

Other Thoughts: Amazing little laptop. Being a linux user, I installed ubuntu on it right away. all drivers installed well, as long as you use the 32-bit versions.
Ubuntu made it even faster than it was with windows, and looks a lot better with the "look" of the laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good...

Pros: This is my first Lenovo laptop and so far I'm pretty happy with it. I bought this to replace an aging Compaq laptop that finally died (it had the Nvidia chipset that cause HP so many headaches).

For the price point, there is nothing to complain about (although there are a few cons). It is peppy for web browsing, email, creating office documents, etc. Even with the slow hard drive, it still boots Windows 8 quick enough.

It's very light and it's slim size makes it feels like you are carry an actual notebook instead of a laptop.

Cons: My biggest complaint is the lack of access to the hard drive and memory. I was hoping to replace the slow hard drive with a 7200 rpm spare drive I had, but I don't want to take the laptop apart and potentially void the warranty to do it.

It does not come with an optical drive.

Windows 8 does take some getting use to but that's not the laptop's fault.

Other Thoughts: For the causal user this is a great little laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Laptop

Pros: Its about the best machine I could find at the four hundred dollar price mark for a sub 4lb laptop. There is nothing great about this laptop, its pretty basic, but it has nice features to it, such as the ability to add an mSata drive, the keyboard is easy to learn and well balanced, The touchpad is expansive and programmable.

Cons: Single Channel memory, there is only one slot and since, kind of defeats the purpose of the trinity graphics config. The screen isn't very bright but it actually makes it easier tread text, like the ereaders.

Other Thoughts: This machine is very basic and cheap, which makes it a good candidate for a college student, particularly because they get stolen some times. If you are looking for simple functionality in a lighter laptop. I did a good deal of research, this is the best I could come up with at this time.

4 out of 5 eggsEthernet Port

Pros: for the price. can't be beat. as other reviews have already mentioned. This laptop is thin, light and quad core.

screen is sharp and easy to read.

Cons: it feels good to move about with 2 hands as it is really light. grabbing nearly any edge single handily has a lacking feel of confidence. as there is minor flex. but nothing to worry to much about.

Other Thoughts: battery life after about 30 mins sits at 3 hours and 29 mins left @ 85%

reviewer n/a stated that there is no Ethernet port. I almost took this as a loss and decided what the heck I'll buy a USB Ethernet adapter. happily though, there is an Ethernet port!!!

if you work IT. this laptop does everything you need with power to spare. office, putty, rdp, music, ogmein and won't break a sweat.

mine came with a slight cosmetic defect. the plastic wrapper behind the screen bezel sticks out slightly. Not to be confused with the plastic sticky bezel protector that you remove.I tried tucking it back in behind the bezel, but it just pops right back up.

4 out of 5 eggsBest value

Pros: Perky and responsive, nice big trackpad, light without feeling flimsy, CHEAP TO BUY.

Cons: Windows 8, typical lower contrast low res screen with a narrow sweet spot angle of view. No optical drive.

Other Thoughts: This was my first Windows 8 laptop and I was very impressed with the hardware performance (AMD A4) but was frustrated by Windows 8. I sold this one and got an i3 Sony with a touch screen which I returned and ended up with a Lenovo Twist with an i5 CPU. Turns out that I hate Win 8 and should have kept the S405 and installed Win 7.

4 out of 5 eggsCould be better for price

Pros: Slim, lightweight, doesn't have a CD-ROM drive (Which I love, since I never use one). CPU and Graphics are decent enough for everyday tasks, and can handle HD video and even some lightweight gaming at low settings. Easy to disassemble, as the entire back panel comes off with a few screws. DC-Jack is easily replaceable (not soldered directly to motherboard). Cheaper than even the low-end ultrabooks while performing similarly. Overall, a decent product for the price and with a couple upgrades can be a well performing machine, however I expected a little more (see below).

Cons: Single channel memory. There is only ONE ram slot, and NO onboard memory, meaning reduced memory performance without dual-channel mode.

Frame seems a little flimsy, i'm afraid to open and close the lid too hard because it flexes more than I am comfortable with.

Trackpad is not smooth, but rather jittery when two-finger scrolling.

Only supports DDR3-1333 (Chipset limitation, not Lenovo's fault)

Battery life leaves a little to be desired. I searched online but could not find an aftermarket upgrade. Hopefully Lenovo releases a higher capacity battery for this model.

Other Thoughts: I upgraded to an SSD a day after purchasing this laptop. A standard 5400rpm drive is practically obsolete these days since they are so slow.

**If you plan on a hard drive upgrade, this laptop REQUIRES A 7mm HARD DRIVE, not the standard 9.5mm size that we are used to.**
