5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: this laptop is really awesome, fast I've had a dell, a Samsung and and Mac book, out of all of these this is My favorite, it has some nice features like the num key pad on the side of the keyboard, there is also one button next to the start button starts the computer and let you choose what you want to do (start in BIOS, boot order, USB...etc.).

Cons: there are few things I would change if I to redesign this product:
1. the hard drive on it very slow every start up I get 30 sec to a minute with 100% disk usage.
2. i would suggest a stronger USB ports mine got loose few months ago, and with little screw driver I managed to fix them.
3. i would allow for greater performance updates like allow faster memory.

Other Thoughts: I just purchased Samsung PRO SSD 1TB and G.SKILL 16GB DDR3 if i dont come back here to complain within a week or so please understand that I'm too happy with my purchase. final thoughts Lenovo rocks I love it, recommend it and definitely buy it again !

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop!

Pros: This laptop is like a gaming desktop in a small package! The i7 and Nvidia GTX 660M allows you to play newer games on high settings, and still get great FPS. I play Guild Wars 2 with it on high settings, ad the laptop hums along without even getting very warm. The 3 USB 3.0 slots and 1 2.0 slot are great for maximum connectivity. The addition of hdmi and bluray makes this laptop's price seem like it should be 50% higher too! The addition o a backlit keyboard is nice.

Cons: The only cons I can think of are the 15.6" size is a bit big for me personally, the touch pad gestures for the start menu and switching between apps can be annoying. I really am not big on Windows 8. Also, like others have said, the hard drive as a slow data transfer rate.

Other Thoughts: For the money, this is a must buy laptop. I see it's discontinued now, and I'm glad I got it before it was! If all you want a laptop for is word processing, facebook, and facebook games, there are better options for a lower price. If you plan to play games, and want a blu ray drive, I highly recommend this one!!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat bang for your buck

Pros: Handsome, sleek shell
LED backlit, full HD display
Backlit keyboard
Blu-Ray
Decent sound from JBL speakers
Very fast processor
Higher end graphics card

Cons: 5400 RPM HDD
Windows 8
Single band wireless
No rescue disk included
Intelligent trackpad is tricky to use

Other Thoughts: After spending weeks searching for a new laptop, I came across this laptop, the Lenovo Y580, here at Newegg and decided to give it a try.

I cross shopped several laptops from Asus, MSI, HP, Acer and Sony before deciding that for the features, specs and price ($999), this was my best choice.

I've had this laptop for about a week now and overall I am very pleased with it's performance and features. This is more computer than I'll probably ever need for routine daily tasks, but it's nice to have all the bells and whistles.

Although I am happy with this laptop, I do have a few small complaints. These complaints are more annoyances than actual problems, so I didn't deduct much from my overall rating. I would of actually rated this laptop 4.5 eggs if it were possible.

The first big annoyance is Windows 8. Granted, I'm getting used to the new Windows after about a week of messing around with it, but I'm still not a big fan of it's cluttered interface. The whole "app" idea is cool, but just not implemented well. I find that I spend most of my time on the classic desktop.

Second annoyance is the Intelligent track pad. This may just be me because I have never owned a device with such a track pad before, but I find it has a steep learning curve to it. I'm also starting to get used to the track pad, like Windows 8, but the gestures are just too sensitive most of the time and I haven't found anyway to make any adjustments. It's also weird having to use two fingers to scroll now instead of using just one finger at the edges of the pad. The integrated buttons are also odd to me, but I guess most laptops are going with this new design.

The next couple of things aren't really a big deal, but I thought I'd still mention them. The indicator lights for power, battery, Num Lock, etc. are located on the very front of the device and are pointed downward slightly. This means that you have to lean way back in your seat or move the bottom of the laptop up to see the lights. I would of much rather them be placed behind the keyboard, on top of the laptop. Also, there is no HDD light.

The last thing is that the optical disk drive has a lot of up and down movement to it, even when closed. This kind of gives it a bit of a cheap feel.

Other than the few things I mentioned that bug me about this laptop, this is still a really great computer and well worth your time looking into if you're in the market for a laptop in the $1000 range.

4 out of 5 eggsawesome

Pros: has everything could have asked for in a laptop but for cheap. very responsive and even if i am not hitting 130 fps on ultra settings in a game it doesn't go below 55. couldn't be happier for what i payed.

Cons: the led screen is powered by the intel hd graphics. maybe i haven't installed the nvidia drivers or something but i find this odd. also when i was looking for ram to upgrade with it said the only stuff you could use was basically what is already in. the jbl speakers sound okay, they are basically tweeters so no real depth or amazing sound that you might be expecting with jbl.

Other Thoughts: sad it is discontinued.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value

Pros: Its features
-8gb
-1tb 2x500gb hds im guessing
-backlit keyboard
-metal parts
-ctrl on corner and not fn key which is another inclination of this laptop being for gaming
-jbl speakers are good performance for a laptop
auto theater mode(its a button) for plug and play blu-ray screen and audio settings

Gtx660 2gb, finally a laptop that has a 1080p screen with a graphics card that fully supports 1080p(none of that radeon low end, or nvidia low end, or integrated garbage(though you have integrated intel gfx for low power consumption when not gaming), this is a ninja gaming computer, it comes with the gtx660m that those more expensive msi, asus, and dare i say alienware laptops come with, at the cheapest price.

a strong quadcore processor unlike some of those asus g series 15" laptops that arent even 1080p at 200$ more than this laptop

Blu-ray support with all of these other features

it looks modest and not like a gaming pc which is a plus to me, its casual appearance makes me look like a regular person when using this in public versus those gaming pc's that give off that nerdy techie look that is too flashy for me.

Cons: 6 cell battery, it would be nice if these companies made 8-9 cells for these 1080p screens and gaming type computers i mean if you are going to put a gtx660 then put some power into it...then again
you can use the intel 4000 interegrated graphics for non gaming, because theres no reason to not plug it in if you are going to be sustained for extended periods of time, in other words using the intel 4000 graphics for watching a blu-ray say on a plane flight, or a road trip on a full charge should have enough to watch a movie on that 6 cell, esp if you know how to under clock the cpu aswell

Other Thoughts: This was voted into a top ten tech products of 2012 and i completely see why, im just glad i saw this before i bought a refurbd asus g series, and those alienwares i saw on CL.

If you are particular like i am and want
1080p
blu-ray capabilities
and enjoy casual gaming(HoN, Dota2, LoL, Skyrim, WOW)-fps gaming(All CODs, ALL CS, and even BF3 on medium) this laptop really does it all and if others are bought over it...Then it was truely overlooked

5 out of 5 eggsWOW!

Pros: Super fast!! For a grand I was expecting to have some sort of problem with speed/frame rates in general but wow... it plays skyrim, broaderlands 2,black ops 2, and wow on high to max settings with no problem at all!! Back lit key light, 1080p, plays blue ray movies out of the box,

Cons: battery life is a little bad when gaming but seriously... its going to be plugged in when your doing that. The main thing that realy bothers me is the touch pad is a little course and sticky, its placed way over to the left and I keep pulling up the side bar on win 8. Feels a little flimsy on the blue ray drive but not too bad.

Other Thoughts: price matched it some where else but man I tell you the speed of this thing is CRAZY! Well worth this sale price!!!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat gaming laptop!

Pros: Really great system for running the latest games, either maxed out settings or very close too it! Play's Black Ops 2 like it's going out of style! Easily over 100fps maxed out settings, with VSYNC turned off. Multi-tasking is easily taken care of. 8 thread processor and good RAM makes the system run flawlessly. Installed a Mushkin mSATA, Windows 7 Ultimate boots to the desktop in under 12 seconds from a cold start.

Cons: None that I can think of... It doesn't make me food when I'm hungry?

Other Thoughts: Thanks NewEgg!

2 out of 5 eggsWiFi makes it a DOG

Pros: Lots of good specs

Cons: The WIFI alone means this is a very poor purchase. Not only is this one of the few + $1000 laptops that doesn't have dual band WiFi, Lenovo is the only major maker that makes it impossible to install a dual band.
Single band on a $300 to $500 laptop is one thing, but not on a $1000 laptop. Even Kindles have moved to dual band on their over $250 tablets. Single band reception is expected to get's much worse in the next couple of years.

I am able to install a $20 dual band on my 6-year-old gateway and have it play Neflix better than this machine ever will.

4 out of 5 eggsgood for maya and 3d studio max

Pros: price is great for the specs. keyboard and mouse do not look or feel cheap. easy to type and backlit keys are a plus. I use this laptop for video rendering and coding. visual studio 2012 and eclipse ofcourse run fine. Rendering a movie will take time but thats to be expected.

Cons: windows 8 is preinstalled and it doesnt come with a cd so if the computer crashes you will have to buy windows 8 again.it

Other Thoughts: i used to buy $4000 laptops but they would overheat and die after a few years. i decided not to make that mistake again and purchased a lower end laptop that could still compete with high end machines. i think i made the right choice.
