4 out of 5 eggsA Good Machine

Pros: The computer, overall, is a good machine. I was very pleased with it the year and a half I owned it. It ran well, never overheated, had a fairly decent graphics card, never gave screen or trackpad issues, and never had any hardware issues (in so far as I could tell; I'm no expert, but it worked well the entire time).

Cons: It was fairly bulky and heavy, but someone probably knows that going in. I did a lot of travelling and it just became cumbersome after a while. Also, like most machines, it is not resistant to hot liquids being spilled onto the keyboard, though I was surprised at just how quickly the machine shut off, and even after a very quick clean up and some home remedies, it would not turn on again. Oh, and the webcam resolution is decent, but lower than I expected. About the quality of some first generation smart-phones.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend it for anyone who just uses a laptop for light gaming (though it would likely also be suitable for more intense gaming as well, I just never did it).

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely love it.

Pros: Low price for the quality
Beautiful finish
Great specs
Great screen
Responsive touchpad
4 USB ports, which is great for me
Overall a great machine

Cons: Low battery life (like 2-4 hours idle)
The hinges feel a bit flimsy. The screen wobbles a bit if moved, and the plastic feels a bit weak even though it isn't.

Other Thoughts: I've been using this laptop more than my $1k computer over the last month, it holds up great on its own. The graphics card is a bit on the low end so it may not run the newest AAA titles at highest settings, but it's good enough to run most anything at a decent rate. The processor is strong enough for flawless emulation and video editing. I really love this thing, and if I can find a longer-lasting replacement battery or something it would be a perfect computer to me. Definintely recommended.

4 out of 5 eggsLenovo G780

Pros: Big screen. Descent ram and HDD size for the price. Fast. Sturdy, stable. Screen is not flimsy as other users have complained of the Acer and Asus laptops. Basically replaced my i5 desktop. Bought if mainly for the screen size, Nvidia card and i7. Swapped out the DVD drive (use it with a USB caddy since I use the DVD very little) and installed a 2nd HDD using a standard HDD caddy. Laptop is quiet (no loud fans), HDD's are quiet as well even the 2nd one I installed. Other users complained about the 2nd HDD not working after going into spin-down mode for power savings but I have not had that problem. Can't tell when the laptop switches from the Intel GPU to the Nvidia GPU. No flickers or screen lag that I've noticed. No touchpad or ethernet problems like others have reported. Has 5 USB ports which have come in handy. SD card reader is a nice feature. Keyboard is quiet. Keys are nice and soft when typing. Screen is very bright. Colors are nice. For those who know what this means, this laptop supports VT-x which was another selling point for me since I tend to run different Virtual Machines on it and they run very well on this laptop.

Cons: The biggest Con is Windows 8 (hence the rating of 4 vs 5). Should have been given the option to chose between Win 7 and Win 8. Tried Win 8 as a demo before this and didn't like it. Bought and installed Windows 7 x64. No problems installing Windows 7. All the drivers needed are on the Lenovo Website. No bloatware to deal with since I did a fresh install of Win 7. Battery life is short. I only get a couple of hours under normal use. I use it plugged in most of the time. Surface is too shiny for my taste and acts as a huge dust magnet. Keyboard keys are a bit too small considering that there is about and inch or so on each side of the keyboard that could have used to make the keyboard and keys a bit bigger. Tend to end up hitting more keys than I intended too and my hands are not big. Something to consider for those with big hands. The speakers and nothing to write home about but they sound OK. Then again what can you expect from such small speakers. The touchpad is a but sensitive and positioned in a way that I always end up swiping it with my thumb and end up with a cursor in no-mans land. I use a USB mouse instead (never liked touchpads). The only other feature I would have liked and would have been willing to pay extra for is a backlit keyboard. Too bad it is not even an option on these budget models. BIOS is very basic. Not many things we can tweak on it but then again I did not buy this laptop for over-clocking. This is not an over-clocking laptop.

Other Thoughts: Overall I am extremely pleased with this laptop. I had specific feature in mind (i7, 17" screen, separate graphics card, 8gb RAM, 1Gb HDD and VT-x) and a budget to maintain (I got it on sale as well). I researched many laptops and this fit my needs. The pro's definitely outweighed the cons. If I would need another laptop I would buy another of these. Never owned a Lenovo before so I took a chance. So far I am pleased.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: There's not much that isn't good about this laptop. The hardware is nice and there aren't any flaws. The keyboard rocks.

Cons: Wish it had an SSD, but that's not happening at this price.

Also, wish that I didn't have to remove Win 8 to make it usable, but once again, that's not Lenovo's fault. It's the fault of Microsoft's OEM agreements. No policy editor. No right-click dragging. Those were the two death knells of Win8 on this box. Otherwise, I would have grinned and borne it.

Other Thoughts: Wish I hadn't gotten a defective cracked screen one first, at least that makes this even at 3 eggs.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Looks good. Started up nicely, except see below.

Cons: Huge star crack on the screen upon opening. Bad handling? The box looked relatively undamaged. I suspect a QA issue.

Other Thoughts: I'm a little sore about getting a DOA broken system out of the box. I'm also sore that a holiday weekend is going to basically mean that I am out the computer for a full 8 days since the initial order. It's enough to make you want to buy local. Next time, I will.

4 out of 5 eggsGood product, good service

Pros: Laptop has been working great for about 60 days, but recently developed a dead pixel in the center of the screen. I was able to set up a repair request with Lenovo within about 10 minutes by calling Phone Support. Received a free shipping label.

Cons: The pixel density is a bit low for the large screen, which results in a really faint visible grid on the screen. Easy to overlook.

Developed dead pixel after about 60 days, but support has been very helpful.

Other Thoughts: -1 egg for the dead pixel, I would only take half an egg if I could as they were very good about taking care of it.

5 out of 5 eggsLevovo G780 Laptop

Pros: Nice build quality, very sturdy and stable. Fast hardware, especially with the I7, 8GB Ram & Nvidia 635M. All the storage I need with the huge 1TB hard drive, and no video stutters or audio drops with the 5400 rpm drive speed. Brilliant colors and sharp text on a big 17" screen, a nice keyboard layout and big responsive trackpad (with buttons)make it a pleasure to use. This laptop is powerful enough to completely replace a desktop, and you get over 4 hrs on battery power (gaming could be less). This is a performance computer at a budget price!

Cons: Windows 8 Start screen. I was completely disoriented by the Windows 8 Start screen, but quickly found a solution. I downloaded Classic Shell (free) off the web and now have the familiar Start Button and boot directly to the desktop - just like Windows is supposed to be!!!

Other Thoughts: Update the Wireless driver immediately after setup to eliminate dropped wireless connections. If not, the wireless connection will be dropped every few hours. I first thought it was the Bluetooth that was causing this, so I turned it off but still had issues. I updated the Wireless driver and have had no more problems.

4 out of 5 eggsGood but not best

Pros: This laptop will do most compiling of large scale code projects and web application pretty quickly. It runs most games on a high quality setting. The performance is good for a 700 dollar laptop. Its a good value for programmers and light gamers. But if you want insane performance for cheap go to Acer or Asus. I dont work for either by the way

Cons: NO OVERCLOCKING!!! turbo boost is shut off on this laptop! why lenovo?
NO 9 cell or 12 cell batteries for this laptop. YOU ARE STUCK WITH A 6 CELL..OH NO YOU DI'ent
Windows 8 is still in its infancy. some apps will not install or install and bomb out. this is a problem with windows not this laptop.

Other Thoughts: Lenovo is basically IBM. So think business and stuck in a box. This laptop is just that. Its restrained in its ability to turbo the CPU. Apparently when turbo'd it's out of sync with the slower GPU and creates instability. Not a bad laptop for what you get out of it. I use it for work as a programmer and electronics engineering. I got it for 670 which is about right for its ability. I suggest Asus or Acer for the ability to tweak the performance for an i7.

1 out of 5 eggsdont buy!

Pros: large screen

Cons: 1.malfunction touch pad
touch pad had a strange malfunction. After you open PC setting window and run internet, it forcefully switch these 2 screens back and forth.

2. mouse freezes
many times, mouth pad freezes.

3.automated unwanted internet disconnection.
within 3 hours, internet connection got disconnected more than 3 times. I have to disconnect and re-connect.

I had this experience twice. I returned first one to replace to the new one, but the second one had the similar problem... I wonder if it is just bad luck or manufacture problems.
