5 out of 5 eggsGreat performance!

Pros: Fast boot, even w/out SSD. Handles about any game I can throw at it. Very expandable. Bought an SSD and ghosted the old 5400rpm HDD over to it, now it boots in less than a second. I'm on Steam and playing graphically intense games within less than a minute. My Y500 has an unused MSATA slot that I might take advantage of.

Cons: Touchpad sucks.
Only 3 USB ports.
No touchscreen, though this is not a big deal.
I have no idea if/when/how SLI is utilized.

Other Thoughts: Upgrade the 1TB drive to a SSD if you can, you won't regret it!

2 out of 5 eggsOne year later

Pros: It's the best hardware for the money.

Cons: I initially reviewed this laptop very highly, as it performed well and had no issues. Almost immediately though, the audio card went out on mine. Ok, no big deal, this happens, send it in and get it repaired under warranty. Time goes on, and I update to windows 8.1, which breaks the SLI, and the supposed bios fix doesn't actually fix it. On top of this, my audio card is going out again, as well as the wireless card.

My friend also bought this laptop and is having all of the same issues that I'm experiencing.

Other Thoughts: It's like a FIAT. Great hardware for the money, but severely lacking in the longevity department.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: SLI Cards with ability to change which does what

Battery Life

Keyboard

Windows 8

Number Pad

Cons: Cards clock way down when not plugged in

Graphics driver crashes a little too often when idle

Only 3 USB ports

Needs more ventilation

Other Thoughts: Overall this is very good for gaming and anything else you would need, the graphic crashes are nothing more than the screen flickering a few times followed by a notification.

I was very, VERY skeptical of the Windows 8 OS but after 5 minutes of use I had gotten very used to it and LOVE IT, I have zero issues with it on anything, I can even play games from early 2000s without any troubles.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good solid build and feel. Doesn't flex when I lift it/type. Screen looks good. The keyboard is pleasant to use (I usually don't like laptop keyboards). The speakers are also good as far as laptop speakers go. Performs well in games, where there is SLI support.

Cons: The touchpad isn't great (a common complaint with this laptop), but it is totally usable. I'm not a huge fan of all the gaudy red stuff either, but that's just me. I also wish the SSD was larger and bootable, I may upgrade it in the future. There is also a rather large unused border around the screen.

Windows 8.

Other Thoughts: All in all, I would buy it again in a heart beat.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Birthday Package

Pros: Nice screen size

Cons: Would have preferred CD/DVD/Blu-Ray vs the "Gaming"

5 out of 5 eggsImproving the Score

Pros: This is a fantastic laptop with great specs and awesome versatility with the ultrabay using the included 2nd graphics card, combo optical drive or even an additional hard drive, not to mention the internal components which can be upgraded by the more tech savvy.

NOTE: THIS LAPTOP HAS DUAL VIDEO CARDS, ONE OF WHICH IS USING THE ULTRABAY WHERE A CD/DVD/BD DRIVE WOULD NORMALLY BE. Don't purchase and then gripe because there is no optical drive. Read the specs.

It ships with Windows 8, and it's a great OS once you learn how to use it. Don't dock eggs from your review because you don't understand how to use the OS or have your negative opinions about Win8. Again, read the specs before buying and complaining about what's included, please.

Cons: The touchpad is touchy and hard to use right out of the box (OOB) because of the multigesture (pinch, expand, two-finger operations) settings. These are set the way they are to make Windows 8 easier to use without a touchscreen. However, you can easily adjust those OOB touchpad settings through the control panel's mouse settings.
If you can't find the Control Panel OOB, you can add it to the desktop by customizing which icons appear on the desktop the same way you did in Windows 7. Or, from the desktop, use your keyboard and hold the Windows key and hit the 'R' key (then release the keys) to bring up the 'Run" box, and type 'control' and hit the 'Enter' key. Afterward, just go down to your hardware/devices area to change the mouse settings according to your preferences.

Un-needed bloatware (pre-installed software by Lenovo) can be removed through the control panel's 'Programs' area if you'd like to get rid of any pre-installed software.

Otherwise, I found this to be an outstanding laptop!

Other Thoughts: I beg everyone reviewing products you purchase/review at Newegg to please stop giving negative reviews about products because you don't like Windows 8 or don't like a feature of the product you didn't understand (such as dual video cards with one using the space normally used by an optical drive) before purchasing. Ask questions before buying or double check the specifications, please, because those kinds of negative reviews unfairly impact product rankings and search result rankings for others looking for good products such as this laptop. Thanks.

And thanks in advance, Newegg, for doing something to weed out illegitimate or unrelated negative reviews from products to make your site easier to use, search, and buy good products. (hint, hint) :-)

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent for Home and Gaming

Pros: Fast, superb resolution and color, plays most of today's demanding games on ultra settings, great sound, pictures and video look great, nice design (I especially like the back-lit keyboard), i7, trackpad works well with Windows 8, stays cool due to great ventilation, very quiet

Cons: Power supply is a brick; but, keep in mind that this computer is a gaming beast. Also, I had to do a lot of personalizing Windows 8 for me to enjoy it (all the changes I made, by the way, were done through the operating system).

Other Thoughts: This is a great laptop for handling home, office, and gaming tasks. Being a fan of Skyrim, I was pleased when this computer played the game on ultra settings without missing a beat.

5 out of 5 eggslenovo IdeaPad Y500 (59359557)

Pros: I love it!!! Fast and powerful. I'm using it to play Starcraft II Heart of the Swarm and it can handle Extreme graphics settings online gaming or solo campaign. Also using it for video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 and my work got even easier.

Cons: Non so far....

5 out of 5 eggsLenevo Y500 review

Pros: Is as powerful as you might expect, extremely. To snag a laptop this powerful at this price is an amazing deal. The two GT 650M are powerful when together on most games. It almost seems you could use this laptop for just about anything, such as taking over the world.

Cons: Only real downside is it heats up very easily, which leads to programs slowing down and loud fan noise. Oh yeah, windows 8 too!

4 out of 5 eggsHardware Awesome, Upgradable. Software garbage, definitely upgradable.

Pros: Okay, so the hardware on the laptop is awesome. Not beastly, but you can upgrade that later. The features that come on this laptop you cannot find on others, and for a great price.

I'd upgrade the RAM by adding on 8GB more, upgrade the HDD to either an SDD or a 7200 RPM HDD, and I'd upgrade the GPU to a Nvidia GTX 680. Again, everything is interchangeable. The laptop doesn't get too hot, and the screen resolution is amazing. I'd recommend this to any real gamer, that has the money to upgrade some of the parts.

The keyboard is awesome, lights up. So many awesome features.

Cons: There are TWO cons to this laptop. Only two.

1) Trackpad

The trackpad is garbage. For gaming, just spend like 30 bucks on a wireless mouse. It's worth it. Not what gave this 4 stars instead of 5.

2) WINDOWS 8

UGH. Okay, this is the reason this is getting 4 stars instead of 5. I seriously cannot stand the new operating system. It isn't compatible with a ton of programs and games, and the interface is atrocious. I had to download ALL the drivers for windows 7 (there are compatible drivers for windows 7 on this laptop), and I had to actually buy a retail version of windows 7 and then install it. Reinstalling drivers and programs takes forever, and it shouldn't have to be done. Honestly, WTH Microsoft. You ruined a perfectly good laptop for people who don't know how to upgrade. Like Windows Vista.

If you need upgrading help, I will help you.

Other Thoughts: No other real thoughts, I mean it's a great laptop. Great starting speeds, and everything is interchangeable.

I emphasize interchangeable because I had a Dell Inspiron N7010, and all the stupid parts were SOLDERED into the freakin' motherboard. The graphics were atrocious, and the thing fell apart. Complete garbage, I didn't know anything about laptops at the time.
