1 out of 5 eggsWorked for 3 months. now contless problems

Pros: Powerful for games, gets hot but not too hot during extended play.

Cons: Worked fine for a few months but after that it wouldn't boot after shut down it will just sit on the black lenovo screen with the circles. Had to run a full restore. then a few weeks later it went to sleep and it wouldn't come back, so i restarted it and the screen wouldn't power on I checked all the connections they were fine. After many (like 12) reboots it did finally come on. Since then its just one issue after another, I have to run a restore at least once a month and if the batter runs down I have to completely re install of windows. This last time it happened nothing worked so I spent hours on their support forums and other places on the internet. Eventually I had to completely disconnect the SSD and install everything on the 1tb drive. It seems to be working alright now but I shouldn't have to completely remove one of the features to get the device to work, the features are part of the reason the I bought it.

Also the keyboard sucks, the back light is either off or on, it doesn't automatically turn off due to in activity. and the function keys are so poorly placed its painful. you have to sit up and use both hands to use the function keys to change the volume. I don't want to have to do that while I'm lying in bed watching a movie. Its pointless to have function keys that mare more inconvenient than using the mouse.

Other Thoughts: lenovo support isn't great. I have been in Tech support for about 5 years now and of all the computers I've seen this is possibly the worst, you can get much better systems for this price that are stable and powerful. I constantly have to worry about losing data or not being able to use my machine for a day while it restores. I don't have the money to replace it so I'm stuck. I had really high hopes for this. Its my first time buying a New laptop and first time buying a "gaming" computer. extremely disappointing. Will not buy lenovo ever again.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy

Pros: Has some pretty decent hardware. Dual 650M SLI worked well for games.

Cons: Touchpad acts awkwardly, causing random mouse cursor jumps.

After only 2 weeks of actually using it, it has blue screened and no longer boot. Attempting to factory reset it states there is a problem reaching partition drives or error code 0xc0000001. Checked forums and found this isn't the first time someone has had booting problems with this laptop. Heard the messing with boot options in bios may fix but been trying that and still no good. Now I see that this product has been discontinued and it should be no mystery why. Biggest waste of money so far.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Laptop

Pros: Great Speed, runs every single game I've played at 60 FPS on at least high settings.
Games I've played:
Skyrim
Payday 2 Beta
Left 4 Dead 2
DayZ mod

Unlike everyone else, I actually love Windows 8.

Solid, good looking laptop overall.

Cons: Slight cons....
Track pad starts out terrible, after some automatic updates, I saw huge improvement, but at the greatest, it still isn't that good.

First week I had some issues with the screen turning off anytime I adjusted the lid, but after another automatic update it works fine.

Fingerprint magnet.

Battery life is low, coming to around 2 and a half hours.

Other Thoughts: Great laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsLenovo Y500- Dual SLI

Pros: This system is exceptionally fast, I love the back lite keyboard. It makes finding WASD that much easier in a dark LAN party. The system isn't to heavy, the screen looks beautiful no dead pixels. The Dual SLI works great, I am very glad that I have moved to Nvidia graphics with Physix. It really improves the gameplay in Borderlands 2.

Cons: The first downside on Dual GPU on this model is that the secondary GPU takes up the Optical drive bay. The primary GPU and CPU cooler vent on the left, and the secondary GPU vent on the right, directly in your mouse. This laptop is a beast with SLI on both GPU's so it takes lots of power, so much the the 170W+/8.5A power brick is as big and heavy as a gold brick. With that being said, it does not play well on battery power running both GPU's the secondary is removable this may help the ingame LAG issues on battery.

Other Thoughts: All in all, I love this laptop, I would buy it again. I personally will be upgrading it to a single SSD over the hybrid drive.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Amazingly fast, excellent screen resolution, dual video cards can handle anything i throw at it, and excellent price

Cons: It comes with windows 8... enough said
But it's fairly easy to downgrade to windows 7 and the US lenovo support site has all the drivers i needed.

Other Thoughts: It comes with windows 8 so i thought I'd finally give it a try... it didn't even make it a week. Honestly it's an okay operating system for the everyday user, but let's be honest: the person buying this type of hardware isn't looking for a leisurely sit-down with their computer. The main problems i had were driver malfunctioning, the system would randomly kick my eternal hard drives, and the system would trip up on menial tasks. They were quick to fix themselves though but it was very annoying.

Since i downgraded to windows 7 it's been nothing but cake, Best computer I've ever had. No complaints

2 out of 5 eggsFrame Shuttering.....

Pros: Bargain price for the hardware
love the design/polished aluminum
fingerprint issue not a big deal with a microfiber cloth.

Cons: Had to RMA it due to fan issues the first time. Now on my second and I am experiencing severe screen tearing and shuttering. If you do your research on this product, you will see that it has been a consistent issue for months now. I had read that the most recent driver update for the sli cards should fix it so i made the purchase, but i am still having the same problems. The problem has something to do with vsync and the refresh rate of the screen being rounded down to 59 fps by windows and up to 60 by nvidia. I am checking a few more forums to see if i can get this straightened out, but I am very displeased with the amount of effort it is taking me to get games that are not graphically taxing to run at any setting on this machine that should be able to play them at high/ultra.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding Gaming Platform

Pros: Nice form factor, considerably lighter than my Alienware M17xR3 and SLI 650s make for awesome gameplay if the game supports SLI. I only use the system for games so it's outstanding and travels well when visiting friends and family. Standard Nvidia drivers seem to work ok. This a great computer. Time will tell if it's as reliable as the Alienware it's replacing.

Cons: Making sure SLI is active before playing was something I initially missed but once corrected all was well. No standalone SSD option and would have preferred 7200rpm drive paired with 16GB SSD instead on the supplied 5400rpm.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for gaming!

Pros: This laptop handles prety much anything you can throw at it. The screen and the speakers are amazing, by far the best speakers that I have seen in a laptop. It stays reletivly quiet during gameplay and the speaker drown out any noise it does make any way. The boot time is great, about 11 seconds or so. It does get a little warm under the W,A,S,D keys but its not to bad.

Cons: The trackpad isn't great but who needs that for gaming anyway. The 1Tb HDD is nice for the space but it is a little slow. I will probably end up replacing it with an SSD.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: This is my second review on this laptop. I've owned it for a little over a month now and I'm still quite impressed. It's definitely worth every penny. Like others have said, it has an awesome screen, awesome speakers, awesome keyboard and is super fast all around. On top of all that, it's a decent gaming machine (see "other thoughts").

Cons: This laptop would be perfect if it wasn't for the touchpad. It's jerky, imprecise and generally non-functional. But, this isn't a deal-breaker for me because I prefer to use a mouse anyway. As far as not having an optical drive or having a limited amount of USB ports or coming preloaded with the "dreaded" Windows 8, those are things that are clearly listed in the product details. It's a bit silly to complain about something if you knew what you were getting before you bought it.

Other Thoughts: I did a lot of research on gaming benchmarks before I bought this laptop and have tested several games since I received it. Different gamers have different opinions on acceptable levels of performance in games. The general buzz is that you want to maintain 40-60 frames per second at all times for your experience to be fluid. Naturally, higher frame rates are more important in some games than others. Strategy games can be enjoyable at lower frame rates whereas racing games need to stay closer to 60 frames per second to be enjoyable. So, what games can be played on what settings on this laptop to maintain that 40-60 frames per second sweet spot? I compiled this list based on my own experiences and online research. I use FRAPS for testing frame rates. Generally, graphics presets come in four flavors (Low, Medium, High and Ultra) and individual settings can be tweaked. Sometimes it isn't necessary to turn your graphics preset from "Ultra" to "High", you just may need to turn shadows down a notch or lower or disable SSAO. Please note that driver updates can drastically improve performance in games, this is just how it stands as of May 2013. Anyway, hope this helps.

Games that can be played on "Ultra" settings

Diablo 3
Dishonored
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Dead Space 3
Borderlands 2
Darksiders 2

Games that can be played on "High" settings:

F1 2012
Starcraft 2
Bioshock Infinite
Metro: 2033
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Medal of Honor: Warfighter
Assassin's Creed 3
Battlefield 3
Anno 2070
Crysis 2
Just Cause 2
Total War: Shogun 2
Secret World
Guild Wars 2
World of Warcraft
Neverwinter

Games that can be played on "Medium" settings:

Sleeping Dogs
Far Cry 3
Metro: Last Light
Max Payne 3
Alan Wake
Hitman: Absolution
Crysis 3
Sim City
Tomb Raider
