5 out of 5 eggsExcelent System

Pros: It has 2 Nvidia GeForce GT 650m is SLI.
I7 processor
16GB mSATA (not listed in the old descriptions)
Plenty fast enough to run modern games, but not on max since it is still a mid-range notebook.
The JLB speakers blew away my expectations. I was anticipating standard notebook audio and planned on using headphones for everything. I didn't need to. Great surprise.

Cons: No disk drive (I knew this but sometimes I do miss it)
The mSATA SSD isn't big enough to use as a primary partition, unless you run it as a Linux dual boot, although you loose the caching ability that makes this drive work.
The SLI sometimes gets confused and turns off even while plugged in. You notice immediately.
OH! WINDOWS 8. I didn't even try to use this I just bumped right back to 7.

Other Thoughts: If you want to use the mSATA as an internal storage option, all you have to do is use DISKPART (Run: DISKPART) and reformat the 16GB volume.
I really enjoyed using this laptop. It doesn't have as much power as a good desktop, but I didn't expect it to be a true monster. It did a good job as my file editor and works well as a multimedia system.
A side note: if you want to install windows 7, you have to use a version that you rip the image from and map onto a USB drive and boot from there. Kind of frustrating. All of the Windows 7 drivers are on the Lenovo site, although I still have wonky problems with the webcam; not too frustrating since I normally just use my phone for that sort of thing.
I did play quite a few games on it from minecraft (120+ FPS) to the NVidia driver optimized Borderlands 2 (~65FPS) or AC3 (~40FPS @ less than my native resolution).

4 out of 5 eggsIf Quality Had a Better Graphics Card

Pros: This laptop is really sweet, the keyboard layout, design, and overall quality is superb. (that's its best feature in my opinion.) I've owned this laptop for almost a year now and i've never had a problem with it. The SLI has worked generally pretty well throughout my experience with this laptop, despite the fact that i feel like they could of done better with the graphics cards, they are alright, especially when working together, i can run fantastic games like skyrim on ultra setting with no difficulty using SLI. Also setting up duel displays works really well with the SLI. Buy a fan for this computer and it well never overheat, the cooling system on this thing is beyond a doubt one of the best, a total beast when it comes to cooling.
All around this laptop is an extremely good deal for how much it costs. Instead of all your money just going to one good part, like the GPU or something in some other "high end gaming laptop" This Laptop Y500 has all around quality distributed throughout the entire system. And last but not least, the touchpad, before purchasing this laptop that was about the only bad review i could find on it at the time, and after owning this laptop for quiet a while, I'd say that the touchpad works great! i dont know what everyone else was whining about.
A couple other things that work great. are the speakers, the ultrabay and also the HD webcam, needless to say, this computer is awesome, and there is always room to upgrade! (ultrabay)

Cons: Some Cons I'd have to point out for people serious about buying this laptop is in concern to the GPU, like i mentioned earlier, i feel like Lenovo could of done better, why SLI to mid grade Graphics cards. The second thing i''d like to point out is that Lenovo itself has not to good customer support, they aren't really friendly and willing to work with you if you have questions, Just from my personal experience. Other then that this laptop rules!! I've never regret purchasing this laptop.

Other Thoughts: I've always considering replacing the SSD in this thing or perhaps looking into upgrading the graphics cards with some Lenovo recommended products or something. Just a thought.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

Pros: Great laptop, and is very quick. I use mine for development primarily and don't have any issues. I have not had any other issues either. Upgraded it to the latest windows 8.1 flawlessly.

Cons: None so far!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Gaming Laptop

Pros: This is a great laptop for the price. It runs games great. It also looks nice. I love the red backlight on the black case.

SSD makes it really fast.

I would recomend it for anyone looking for a gaming laptop but not wanting to spend a ton of money on one.

Cons: Windows 8

I have gotten used to it but not all games run on windows 8 yet and it's up to their developers to make them compatible with the new operating system.

Installed a program that gives me a start menu. Windows 8 is fine I just wish there was a windows 7 option for this gaming laptop.

Other Thoughts: Speakers do not work on my laptop. Searching the web it seems to be a loose wire. Doesn't bother me though because I use headphones and extremely rarely the external speakers.

3 out of 5 eggsNo Blue Ray available. Bad Lenovo.. Bad!!

Pros: Very fast. Faster!!!
Real value for the money.
Great for portable gaming,
Looks fantastic.
Awesome display and also great on the big screen using the HDMI out port.
Battery life acceptable for dual graphics.

Cons: Can *NOT* find where to purchase the advertised Blu Ray drive for the "Removable" add in slot.

I WANT to remove my SLI card to put a Blu Ray DVD in it. But cannot find a Blu Ray Y500 option from Lenovo or anyone else.

Run around from Lenovo over this.

All EGG's off for this alone...otherwise would give it 5 EGG's.

Caps lock indicator is hidden.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy it if you expect to get a Blu Ray for your ON BOARD SLOT.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for linux

Pros: Powerhouse of a machine with great screen. I was looking for all in one machine that could come close to desktop specs. Makes a great dual boot machine if you replace the 16gb msata drive with this something like a Plextor M5M PX-128M5M. The bios auto detects the new drive and because it is not formatted to be a cache drive like the stock 16gb and you can easily install you choice of linux distro. This does not effect the WIn8 install. The keyboard is perfect with just the right amount of pressure needed to trigger.

Cons: Win8 and the touch pad is the worst i have ever used. Its almost pointless. Only the specs and value of the rest of machine make a good purchase.

Other Thoughts: KDE looks great on this screen.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat bang for your buck

Pros: Screen size and quality - I know it is a TN panel, but I swear it looks like an IPS (except for the viewing angles).

i7 3630QM - This processor does better in some benchmarks than the massive two-year-old quad-core I have in my desktop!

Dual GT650M - best deal for mobile graphics I have ever seen.

Keyboard - very high quality. There are 3 brightness levels (off, low, high) for the red backlight. Keystrokes are short and feel very crisp and natural. Good for both gaming and fast typing.

12GB RAM - Seriously, what am I going to do with all that RAM?

Speakers - very good for a laptop.

Cooling - also very good for a laptop. This laptop produces much more heat than most (as you would expect, with a quad-core processor and two graphics cards), but it also cools much more effectively than most. Intake is on the bottom face and exhaust is on both right and left. The most strenuous stress tests I ran could not get any components to hotter than 77C (with ambient temperature about 20C).

Cons: Windows 8 - enough said. I am still considering just installing Windows 7 instead...

Trackpad - horrible. Frequently does not sense 1 finger vs. 2 fingers; crazy out-of-control scrolling sensitivity; hard to click without causing the cursor to move. Very annoying. Use a mouse.

Headphone jack is on the close right corner. This can interfere with the mouse. I was playing Far Cry 3 and trying to sneak, when my mouse button hit up against my headphone jack and caused my gun to fire, giving away my position.

Casing - feels flimsy. Just be careful with it...

Caching SSD - not nearly as good as a normal SSD. Benchmarks were only slightly better than a traditional HDD.

Charger - massive. This is not really that much of a con, but I just did not expect it to be this big. It is also heavy to carry around.

No DVD drive - Also not that much of a con. I have only needed to use it once, and I just used an external DVD drive. This is not a make-or-break feature, as DVDs are being phased out for other digital media.

Other Thoughts: Just before I bought this, I was planning on buying the lower-priced version of this same laptop (without caching SSD with 6GB RAM, and with a dual-core i5). When I saw this on sale for just 100 bucks more, I decided to go for it.

Here are a few more things that have caught my attention:

The battery really does last 3+ hours, so long as you are not gaming.

Not having a DVD drive is not a big deal.

Everything else is just as it says in the product description. Overall, I would recommend this computer to anyone looking for affordable performance.

4 out of 5 eggsNot a bad purchase, but could be better.

Pros: The screen res is absolutely gorgeous, and the back-lit keyboard adds a cool touch, and feels very nice and smooth on your fingers when typing. Speakers are probably the best I've seen on a laptop. Booting up and shutting down is fast as lightning, I have yet to find a game that I can't run smoothly on high/max settings on this. It also has great temperature control.

Surprisingly, there was little to no pre-installed bloatware when it came out of the box.

Cons: The touch-pad is the worst I have ever seen, surpassed even by laptops that i've owned 5+ years ago, making a separate mouse purchase mandatory.

THERE IS NO DVD DRIVE. Granted, they did put an extra drive in its place, which definitely makes up for it. But just something to be aware of.

Wifi range is relatively short.

Biggest con of all...WINDOWS 8. Despite this machine's fairly healthy specs, it still has a clunky and awkward interface. You can also kiss your privacy goodbye. Make sure you switch it to Windows 7, or your favorite Linux distro before transferring over any new files.

Other Thoughts: Definitely not a BAD purchase, but for $1k +, building your own rig would definitely be a wiser decision. Make sure you do thorough research beforehand, or you may experience a slight buyer's remorse as I did. Having said that, This is the best gaming LAPTOP that money can buy at the moment., and if portability is a high priority for you, then ook no further. Razer blade, alienware, etc all have nothing on this.

2 out of 5 eggsgood laptop terrible wifi card

Pros: it is a good laptop I like the keyboard, the new touchpad is much better, the screen is OK.

Cons: the wifi card that comes with it is terrible, Lenovo will not even sell you an upgraded card as you have to buy one from them because the bias is locked

Other Thoughts: I sent it back because of the wifi card, as I could not buy a replacement/better card all they would do is repair it with the same card.

4 out of 5 eggsGood budget gaming laptop

Pros: Nice looking LCD screen at 1920 x 1080 @ 15 inch size. It makes web sites and games look great. Chicklet keyboard red backlight is cool looking. 650M SLI seems fast enough for the games I play. Ready Cache software helps the slow hard drive with loading games and apps.

Cons: The primary hard drive is too slow. Since this is a gaming laptop they should have went with a 7200 RPM drive. The screen border is thick. They should have used the extra space and put in a 16-17-inch screen at 1920x1080. The mouse pad sucks like everyone else has said. It is usable but if you are playing games or like to surf a lot then get a Bluetooth mouse or a wired mouse.

Other Thoughts: The lack of a DVD drive didn't bother me as I already owned a USB DVD drive for use with a netbook. The fact that you have to disable boot security and then enable legacy boot options before you can boot to DVD is a headache. The mSata SSD is nice and helps boost the slow primary drive so I can't imagine buying this laptop without that option. Also 16 GB from the factory saves me time on upgrading the memory. 8 GB would be ok for most users but I like to run virtual machines from time to time so 16 GB is a welcome option.
