5 out of 5 eggsAbove expectations

Pros: Quick, solid, touchscreen responding perfectly, nice size. Good specs for the price.

Cons: Windows 8 updates can be a pain sometimes...

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: + Powerful for the price, runs some lesser AAA video games on low settings
+ Comfortable keyboard
+ Does most all tasks about as fast as you'd need them to
+ Low price for what you get

Cons: - Dreadful build quality, at the time of writing the charger port has completely broken free from the casing, which makes just plugging this thing in a struggle. The case itself is loosely put together and no amount of screw tightening can fix it.
- Screen is only 1366x768, not a huge deal but its noticeably low resolution may irk some people
- Like many Lenovos, the trackpad leaves a whole lot to be desired. I ended up disabling it entirely and sticking with a wireless mouse.
- Cooling is subpar, the case itself becomes physically hot with too much use. This may be a pro if your primary plan is to use an underpowered laptop to warm your home in the winter.
- Just a little on the heavy side, at 5.9 lbs its no Macbook, for sure. Like the resolution, not a real issue, just an annoyance.
- Seriously, though, the build quality is awful. It may be a laptop, but that does not excuse shoddy construction.

Other Thoughts: Over the past year or so, this laptop has served me extremely well. As an incoming college student, I needed something powerful enough to serve its day-to-day functions extremely competently while not draining what little money I had. And on that front, the Lenovo G500s worked wonderfully. The performance was much better than I expected going in, and it held up rather well for quite a while. It has been my favorite computer that I've owned my entire life, and I am thrilled that it was so competent.
However, I cannot recommend this laptop. For quite a while there were no huge issues. Beyond a screw falling out here and there and the screen hinge being a bit rickety, for all intents and purposes this laptop appeared to be top-tier. As it aged and underwent the stresses of daily use, the fabled poor build quality of the Lenovo G series began to show itself. Portions of the case came completely loose, and keys began breaking and coming loose.
As I sit here, my laptop is falling apart. I certainly didn't physically abuse it, this wear and tear comes from simply moving it between bed and desk on a regular basis and heavy stationary use. I really wish I could pass on a sparkling review, because while it lasted this laptop was a godsend when it came to typing, browsing, gaming, and late night Netflixing. But, one detail overshadows every shining pro. This computer will not last. I'm frantically scraping my money together to buy a new one not one year into its lifespan because I, like many others on the internet before me, discovered that Lenovo G series laptops just don't hold up. Ignoring this glaring fault, I'd give this laptop 4 or 5 eggs for its stellar performance when I needed it to perform. If you plan on this being your college laptop that will last you for at the very least your first two years, I urge you to reconsider. You should be able to make it last a year if you're diligent about keeping the screws tight and avoiding unnecessary strains on the case, but beyond that is a gamble with poor odds.
There aren't very many laptops this good for this price, but you can definitely feel where the corners were cut to keep the price on this model down.
