5 out of 5 eggsAwesome quality for the price

Pros: Sturdy high quality built

Cons: Thick, heavy for its size
Processor is little slow but bare-able.
Screen quality is not so good.

Other Thoughts: You get more than what you pay for.
Upgrade with SSD and some ram, you get yourself a decent laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat with W7

Pros: Rugged - good keyboard and pad - easy to add memory
For reliable, simple tasks - can not go wrong - mostly because it has W7.

Cons: Display needs to be inclined a lot to get it to look right. Display is relatively low resolution, which was not important to me. HD has partition for Lenovo software, which reduces effective size.

Other Thoughts: Bought direct and it came with W8.1 - Very bad idea! Have to remove drive, put in new drive, buy W7 and install. It is great that one can now buy with W7 - worth extra $. 4GB chip can be added in open slot. Not real fast, but I use for communicating with instrumentation so speed and resolution are good enough. Wish I had seen this sale.

3 out of 5 eggsPerforms well / low durability

Pros: Good laptop for the price.

Cons: I'm rough on laptops and this little guys just can't take my abuse. Should have went with another T series. Price was low though. Clearly a case of getting what you pay for.

4 out of 5 eggsFeels like a ruggedized netbook

Pros: - Thinkpad keyboard in all of its glory
- Matte screen
- Feels solidly built
- Easily access hard drive and RAM by removing 3 phillips head screws
- 8+ hours battery life

Cons: The screen border is very wide. The already tiny screen could have been an inch wider and 2 inches taller.

Comes with both Windows 7 & 8 but no activation codes included so can not transfer to other devices.

Annoying red LEDs in Thinkpad logos (dot of the i) and a green light at the top to indicate wifi is on. I assume this is provided for teachers and instructors benefit so that they can quickly scan a room to see what students are doing. However, I was annoyed.

Other Thoughts: This is not a pretty device in the way that an Apple Air is but it has a nice heavy, ruggedness about it. Unfortunately I do not have a scale but the X140e's weight is similar to my 15 inch Samsung laptop. It's a hefty chunk of rubberized plastic.

The changes I made from the initial configuration was to add some RAM I had laying, an SSD, and installed Linux Mint. All went well and I am satisfied with the X140e's performance of daily tasks.

If you're planning to go on the road for a long time this is the laptop I would recommend. If you tend to handle equipment, this is your device. If you want a featherweight device to win you acceptance among an elite group of friends look somewhere else.

5 out of 5 eggsHigh praise for Lenovo support

Pros: The laptop failed (it happens). Called Lenovo on Monday and explained the failure. No runaround; they sent me an overnight box which arrived the next day. I returned the laptop on Wednesday, and it was fixed AND RETURNED only two days later on Friday.

Cons: The fact that the laptop died isn't good, but I'm not taking off an egg (unless it happens again) because the speed of service made it almost not matter.
The laptop itself is not a speed-demon, but that's not why I bought it.

Other Thoughts: In relation to my earlier review:
Adding a SSD added at least a half hour of battery life, maybe more, and sped up boot time a lot, but didn't affect application load time as much. Adding RAM also helped speed some, but not a lot. This laptop is primarily for comms (and limited entertainment) in low-power and/or SHTF scenarios, and seems very well suited to that role.

5 out of 5 eggsExceeded expectations

Pros: Amazing battery life. Crisp screen. Sturdy. Faster than I expected. Small and light. Dungware mostly unobtrusive. Easy to add another 4GB of RAM (8 total). Good keyboard. HDD is 7200RPM.
HD8330 is able to play older games like Guild Wars, and anything Flash based.
Wireless radio seems decent; connects around 130Mb/s with no drops. Comes preloaded with Windows 7 Professional.

Cons: Stock RAM is CAS 11. Cannot add a mSATA SSD without removing the wireless card, so it is either/or but not both.
No optical drive (more FYI than con; should not be expected in this size). No HDD activity LED.
Won't connect to my Home Group yet, but that's probably my fault and some tweaking is needed, so no -egg.

Other Thoughts: I began loading software (from the Internet) and configuring this system at 9:00a. I also streamed Uncle Sam's Misguided Children Internet radio (at mostly low volume) during this process. At 3:00p when I was done listening and shut down, it still showed two hours of battery life left.
I later replaced the stock RAM with 2x4GB (8 total) of CAS9 G.Skill. I've also loaded software from an external optical drive, and from a USB 3.0 thumb drive. I'll be switching to a 256GB SSD this weekend assuming an external enclosure arrives.
The touch pad will take a little tweaking and getting used-to, so that's neither pro nor con.
