3 out of 5 eggsDiscovered a nasty bug

Pros: This is an update to a previous review -- I can't figure out how to edit my original post on 3/15/2014.

Cons: As stated prior, I am running Windows 8.1 and Start8, mimicking the UI of Windows 7. I can't stand Windows 8. After installing a slew of MS updates about 1 month ago, the machine attempted a warm boot. After the logging in, Window's UI hung, displaying a black screen with a functional mouse pointer. After 4 hours of troubleshooting, I was forced to reimage the drive with a recent backup prior to the updates. A week later, I tried the updates again, and the exact same thing happened. I figured it must be something low-level -- either a BIOS or graphics driver issue. I went to Nvidia's website and downloaded a newer driver package. The machine hung again at the same spot upon reboot after updates. I am now in the position of owing a $1500 laptop that cannot be upgraded. I went to Lenovo's website and updated the BIOS. I have not yet tried to update the OS again, as I do not have an afternoon to devote to this nonsense. I searched the web, and haven't found any problems like mine -- the closest thing being a BIOS-related issue regarding running off of battery. Lenovo's website doesn't offer any contact options, despite this machine being under warranty. I will continue to use the laptop without further updates for the time being, and will post again if I ever figure this out. Too bad -- this is a nice machine, marred by a horrible trackpad and BIOS/driver issues. Stay tuned.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Machine

Pros: A great desktop replacement. Runs very quietly and generates little heat. Fast machine. Not a lot of "bloatware".

Cons: Heavy for a laptop (since it's large). Documentation could be better.

Other Thoughts: Glad I bought it!

3 out of 5 eggsBattery Woes

Pros: Great display, great performance all around, quiet, cool ...everything one would expect from a configuration of this kind.

Cons: The Lenovo power management system is not recognizing the Lenovo battery as an authorized component and therefore (apparently) refusing to charge the battery (plugged in but not charging error following the unauthorized error). There is a recent BIOS update, but I can't load it ...because the battery is below 30%.

Other Thoughts: There is zero helpful guidance anywhere on the Internet (apparently) for this problem. I rely on this laptop daily, but now it looks like a warranty repair. :-(

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop for the price

Pros: For the money this is about the best laptop I could find. It is fast, plenty of RAM and a solid (not great) GPU. The screen is good and the inclusion of a Blu-Ray player/burner is a nice extra.

Got rid of Win 8 and installed Linux Mint - Had to install NVidia drivers and Bumblebee for the GPU, once that was done everything worked flawlessly, battery life is solid for a laptop with these specs.

Cons: The keyboard feels a little flimsy but works fine and the touch pad feels over sensitive but neither is a deal killer.

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a great buy for the money, a well rounded laptop that provides excellent performance, you will be hard pushed to get better for this price. Very happy with the purchase.

1 out of 5 eggsNever Lenovo. Never Again.

Pros: Large screen, backlit keyboard

Cons: System failed to boot after 2 weeks, recovery partition had errors. Lenovo sent recovery disks, but 2nd disk was bad leaving me with an overpriced brick for even longer.

The Lenovo support website is a good decade behind other similar sites. Their drivers are buggy, there is no auto-diagnostic tool to determine your device and load the appropriate drivers like Dell and ASUS have, just to name a couple.

Even if the recovery disks had worked, the "English" instructions are so poorly written that they're practically nonsensical. I realize Lenovo is not a US company, but it's not that hard to hire someone who can write legible instructions.

The keyboard, while backlit, is very flimsy and the entire thing "bounces" while you type.

The battery is tiny and doesn't last anywhere close to what Lenovo claims.

Other Thoughts: I've never had so much trouble with a laptop before nor have I had such terrible experiences with a support site. The people answering the phones are pleasant enough, but they're pretty useless at helping beyond that.

I'm having to wait 3-5 business days for a second set of recovery disks all because the "recovery.ini" file on disk 2 is empty. Lenovo has no method of downloading an ISO of the disk or even sending along a good copy of said .ini file so I can just burn my own disk and hopefully climb out of this overpriced hole Lenovo has put me in.

Never Lenovo. Never Again.

5 out of 5 eggsThe BEST combo of performance and price you can find.

Pros: -Display is very sharp with great viewing angles
-Runs very quiet with very low heat output
-Performance with i7 processor and 16 GB RAM is very smooth and responsive
-Battery optimization software installed by Lenovo is simple and easy to use
-Graphics card is great
-Build quality is solid, feels very sturdy and well-made

Cons: -The size of the "Enter" and "Backspace" keys are a little to small as it is easy to end up hitting the keys next to then instead on occasion, but should be able to get used to them in time

Other Thoughts: Great laptop, I could not be more happy with my purchase so far. Very hard to find a 17.3 inch laptop with comparable specs at this price.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Laptop minus the Windows 8 and bloat.

Pros: Internal specs - Very great specs for what I felt was a very reasonable if not low price! Was surprised to see these specs for this price
Screen Size - For someone who uses this for CAD and other programs, the big screen is a huge perk
Full size keyboard - it is nice to get a keyboard with a numpad.

Cons: Bloatware - Yes this comes with lots of bloatware, but it is easy to get rid of, half an hour and you can have it all removed, all PC's that come preloaded with an OS have plenty of bloatware, just remove it and you should be fine.
Windows 8 - This is a business laptop, windows 8 is terrible for that, the metro interface is annoying and meant for tablets and touchscreen, not a normal PC. But go get your self a classic shell download or just put windows 7 on there and you should be fine.

Other Thoughts: A very solid well rounded laptop, will work fine for what I need to do with it. The only major things I have wrong with it are software that it does not need, but that is all easily fixable to someone with even the smallest amount of PC knowledge.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Desktop Replacement

Pros: Dedicated video card, fast, quiet, stays cool, boots very quickly.

Cons: Like others have said, the keyboard feels a little "flimsy" towards the center, but the keys respond perfectly.

Other Thoughts: I have bought 3 other laptops and returned them all to find the right one, and this is it! If you are going back and forth like I was...just stop it and buy this.

4 out of 5 eggsQuite the idea...

Pros: Excellent graphics even at 1080p
16G onboard makes things fast
2 USB 3.0 ports
Excellent wi-fi connectivity
Nice keyboard for big fingers
Hybrid drive @ 1TB

Cons: Sound is weak - decent quality but so-so volume
Camera quality is mediocre
Only 2 USB 3.0 ports
Mediocre battery life.
HD only 5400 RPM
Useless bloatware

Other Thoughts: I have to say that I've been impressed with this machine since I have had a chance to play with it. At first I had a BATTERY NOT PRESENT error. DUH! forgot to put the battery in! It is very long and skinny and it was kind of hiding under some cardboard in the box ;-)

Since then the performance of the laptop has met almost all my expectations. The cons listed are merely annoyances, and don't really inhibit use of the machine in anyway. But there were enough annoyances where it cost what would have been a 5 star product a star. If I could I would rate this 4 1/2 stars.

What I found most impressive were the graphics and the overall display performance of this machine. If you do lots of slick multimedia presentations this box will suit you well. Even as a budget gamer it works. I play a lot of Torchlight II and even with all the settings maxed out it always looked really good.

Having 16G of memory was a wise decision to make for me. Doing software engineering I tend to find myself with so many windows and apps opened at the same time I lose track. Still switching between apps under moderate multitasking loads is very quick.

That's because the hard drive doesn't have to drag data out of the virtual memory much. With the hybrid HD pulling cached data off the SSD is very quick. But I have noticed there is a limit to the amount of windows opened before data starts pulling off the main part of the HD, and there is a noticeable performance hit at that time as the main HD is only 5400RPM. Still, I think I had something like 3 spreadsheets, a couple huge Word Docs, an Access DB, Visio drawing and I was listening to MP3s off the drive with a bunch of web pages open before I got to that point, so I was pounding on the laptop a little bit. It certainly wasn't horrible considering the data draw that was occurring. It was just noticeable is all.

Lastly I was disappointed in the sound from this laptop. At least the amount of volume it produces. I took it camping with me and in a tent at 2 am with almost silence for ambient sound levels, I could bare hear the DVD I was watching unless my head was almost touching the keyboard. The quality is good, as I have hooked it through my home theater system and a Bluetooth speaker, but it leaves a lot to be desired through the laptop speakers. I would suggest if you use this for presentations to have a good Bluetooth speaker to pair with the laptop.

Luckily I rarely ever do a presentation. I do a fair amount of video conferencing though. I found the built in camera is OK, but nothing to rave about. It is 720p, and will take a decent enough picture. Even a short video segment comes out alright. It is iffy in the real-time video, where it shows a fair amount of the "Max Headroom" effect. It's usable, but I could have wished for 1080p and a little better real-time performance.

For the most part I am very pleased with th

4 out of 5 eggsGreat value! Thrilled with this lappy

Pros: Sharp display. CPU is fast and powerful enough to handle my needs. Graphics capabilities are impressive too. I've run some mid-level graphically intensive games without a hitch. 1 TB hard drive is adequate. Bottomless RAM for anything you'd use this laptop for. Backlit keyboard! Pricetag is perfect for the value.

Cons: Hard drive read/write speed is very underwhelming. That's the biggest performance bottleneck. I'm not sure why a better hard drive couldn't have been equipped. Battery life is limited. Comes with Windows 8.1 and a ton of bloatware, but that's industry standard and easily rectified if you prefer 7. 7 runs fine with the hardware.

Other Thoughts: A much better purchase than I anticipated. Very pleased.
