5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Large screen, great for watching movies
Loads fast thanks to the SSD and tons of memory

Cons: Battery died within six months and had to get a replacement from Lenovo. It was under warranty and the part was free.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop at a great price

Pros: Great performance large beautiful screen. It works great for when I go to the coffee shop to code. This laptop does everything I need and never feels slow.

Cons: The keyboard feels like it has a little give at first but it is easy to get used to.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Machine w/ Battery Flaw

Pros: • The display is great
• Illuminated keyboard is a nice touch
• Overall atheistic are nice, no cheesy lights on the outside
• Great boot time with Windows 8
• 4 USB Ports (2 High Speed)
• Blu-ray player

Cons: • About once a week I get a "unauthorized battery" pop up and my battery wont charge. The more reading I do on it the more it sounds like it is a common problem. The only fix is to remove the battery and put it back in the terminal which doesnt sound hard but the battery gets fully depleted which really hurts its mobility if you have to bring your A/C charge cord everywhere with you. Why even have a laptop? No help from Lenovo as well. But I have installed the new BIOS and removed the battery bloatware that could be the issue.
• A lot of bloat ware
• There was no superfish on my machine but even having to worry about it was a con.
• Speakers are "meh"

Other Thoughts: Aside from the battery issue the machine is a great value. If they can resolve the issue the machine would get 5 stars but if I was shopping for this machine I would be weary just because of this issue. Their customer service is poor but that almost seems to be industry standard with these companies aside from MAC but a similar mac would be twice the price.

2 out of 5 eggs'Unauthorized battery' shipped with this IdeaPad

Pros: This system has plenty of power and a wonderful screen. I use it primarily for development and run several Virtual boxes at once on it and never suffer performance degradation.

Cons: Apparently, this system shipped with an 'Unauthorized battery.' Now it literally won't charge. It seems I'm out two hundred dollars for a new battery.

1 out of 5 eggsVery disappointing customer service response

Pros: n/a

Cons: I purchased this a few months ago. It arrived working fine, but after ~20hrs of use the battery stopped taking a charge. I contacted support two weeks ago and they said they would have a replacement battery out in 3 days. It still has yet to arrive. I have spent over an hour on the phone with them (primarily on hold.) A supervisor informed me today it 'should arrive tomorrow' and offered no apologies or explanation for the delay. I work in IT and go to school full time and without a functioning battery, the laptop cannot perform its intended purpose, and is useless. This low quality product has caused me a considerable loss in time and productivity. I will not buy this brand again.

3 out of 5 eggsDiscovered a nasty bug

Pros: This is an update to a previous review -- I can't figure out how to edit my original post on 3/15/2014.

Cons: As stated prior, I am running Windows 8.1 and Start8, mimicking the UI of Windows 7. I can't stand Windows 8. After installing a slew of MS updates about 1 month ago, the machine attempted a warm boot. After the logging in, Window's UI hung, displaying a black screen with a functional mouse pointer. After 4 hours of troubleshooting, I was forced to reimage the drive with a recent backup prior to the updates. A week later, I tried the updates again, and the exact same thing happened. I figured it must be something low-level -- either a BIOS or graphics driver issue. I went to Nvidia's website and downloaded a newer driver package. The machine hung again at the same spot upon reboot after updates. I am now in the position of owing a $1500 laptop that cannot be upgraded. I went to Lenovo's website and updated the BIOS. I have not yet tried to update the OS again, as I do not have an afternoon to devote to this nonsense. I searched the web, and haven't found any problems like mine -- the closest thing being a BIOS-related issue regarding running off of battery. Lenovo's website doesn't offer any contact options, despite this machine being under warranty. I will continue to use the laptop without further updates for the time being, and will post again if I ever figure this out. Too bad -- this is a nice machine, marred by a horrible trackpad and BIOS/driver issues. Stay tuned.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Machine

Pros: A great desktop replacement. Runs very quietly and generates little heat. Fast machine. Not a lot of "bloatware".

Cons: Heavy for a laptop (since it's large). Documentation could be better.

Other Thoughts: Glad I bought it!

3 out of 5 eggsBattery Woes

Pros: Great display, great performance all around, quiet, cool ...everything one would expect from a configuration of this kind.

Cons: The Lenovo power management system is not recognizing the Lenovo battery as an authorized component and therefore (apparently) refusing to charge the battery (plugged in but not charging error following the unauthorized error). There is a recent BIOS update, but I can't load it ...because the battery is below 30%.

Other Thoughts: There is zero helpful guidance anywhere on the Internet (apparently) for this problem. I rely on this laptop daily, but now it looks like a warranty repair. :-(

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop for the price

Pros: For the money this is about the best laptop I could find. It is fast, plenty of RAM and a solid (not great) GPU. The screen is good and the inclusion of a Blu-Ray player/burner is a nice extra.

Got rid of Win 8 and installed Linux Mint - Had to install NVidia drivers and Bumblebee for the GPU, once that was done everything worked flawlessly, battery life is solid for a laptop with these specs.

Cons: The keyboard feels a little flimsy but works fine and the touch pad feels over sensitive but neither is a deal killer.

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a great buy for the money, a well rounded laptop that provides excellent performance, you will be hard pushed to get better for this price. Very happy with the purchase.

1 out of 5 eggsNever Lenovo. Never Again.

Pros: Large screen, backlit keyboard

Cons: System failed to boot after 2 weeks, recovery partition had errors. Lenovo sent recovery disks, but 2nd disk was bad leaving me with an overpriced brick for even longer.

The Lenovo support website is a good decade behind other similar sites. Their drivers are buggy, there is no auto-diagnostic tool to determine your device and load the appropriate drivers like Dell and ASUS have, just to name a couple.

Even if the recovery disks had worked, the "English" instructions are so poorly written that they're practically nonsensical. I realize Lenovo is not a US company, but it's not that hard to hire someone who can write legible instructions.

The keyboard, while backlit, is very flimsy and the entire thing "bounces" while you type.

The battery is tiny and doesn't last anywhere close to what Lenovo claims.

Other Thoughts: I've never had so much trouble with a laptop before nor have I had such terrible experiences with a support site. The people answering the phones are pleasant enough, but they're pretty useless at helping beyond that.

I'm having to wait 3-5 business days for a second set of recovery disks all because the "recovery.ini" file on disk 2 is empty. Lenovo has no method of downloading an ISO of the disk or even sending along a good copy of said .ini file so I can just burn my own disk and hopefully climb out of this overpriced hole Lenovo has put me in.

Never Lenovo. Never Again.
