2 out of 5 eggsNot worth the money

Pros: Started out as a nice purchase, but as time has passed, this machine has had more and more issues.

Cons: This laptop was supposed to be my gaming/school laptop for my final years of college. It started out great, running games like Skyrim at Ultra High Quality. Only issue I had with gaming that hard was that I would torch whatever I sat next to from the heat it produced from the vent. Over time, though, this machine has had an immense problem with randomly shorting out and shutting down. It started when I tried upgrading the HDD to and SSD, the machine was installing the OS and suddenly shut down. Tried reviving it, but all attempts were in vein. Had to send it off to warranty (with shipping at MY expense!!!) and got it back fixed. I was able to install the SSD successfully, and it only curbed the slowness. Very disappointed in this purchase, Acer has been very little help. I used to be an Acer fanatic, but after this laptop and another recent tablet purchase failed, I am steering away from them for a bit.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty good

Pros: The machine runs incredibly cool, runs pretty much any game mid to high settings does pretty everything i need it to do so far.

Cons: I only have one con really and its really annoying don't know if it happens to anyone else, but it seems like when im running powerful apps like games, while charging the laptop goes nuts and starts to charge and discharge.
So far this doesn't happen when im watchin a video in full screen or surfing the web just when im playing games.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully this is some that can be fixed with a bios update are something like that because its really annoying aside from that the laptop is great.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat bang for your buck!

Pros: 6GB memory
17.3" screen
Nvidia dedicated GPU
Intel i5 w/ boost up to 3.2 Ghz (haven't tried yet)
USB 3.0
DVD super multi
Multi card reader
Runs games fairly well. So far I've played Terraria, Jagged Alliance Online, Vindictus, A.R.E.S, and plan on trying out many more. The ones I have played are actually running full graphics without a hiccup! (that may not be saying much though! :P)
A lot more that are listed in the specs!

Cons: Windows 8 - I'm getting used to it, but, I don't get why MS has to push an OS meant for touch sensitive hardware on something that doesn't utilize that tech. Win 7 works just fine. Oh well. What else can you expect from a company that monopolizes the OS for PC. Like I said. I'm slooooowly getting used to the feel of it.

5400 rpm HDD. We're in the 21st century. Let's act like it. 5400 is waaaay outdated. But hey, with all the other great tech they did put in, they had to cut a corner somewhere. Overall I'm not horribly upset, but that is the second thing I would have changed, the first being the OS. That and the laptop doesn't pay my bills (yet, muahahah)

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm happy with my selection, and I'm glad that it lived up to all the specs I read about. Sure this isn't the most extreme gaming laptop, but it works great for light or less graphic demanding new gen games. I would label this laptop as more of an all around entertainment laptop. You can do a little bit of everything on it. In MHO for what else is out there this laptop is the best bang for your buck. If you're deciding between this and a similarly priced laptop, just get this one. It isn't overloaded with bloatware and anything you get with a preinstalled OS is going to be Windows 8. If you hate it that much just install win 7 and be on your merry way.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat deal

Pros: Ordered this for a friend's kid. Nice viewable screen area and superb performance for the money. Got it for $699 on sale. Beast of a machine for the cost. Runs Minecraft around 60FPS and played the new Bioshock Infinite on medium settings with very little stutter. Has plenty of USB ports, built in Wi-fi, DVD burner, extra slots for memory and an additional HDD/SSD. He was very happy and his parents liked the price.

Cons: Wasn't free, but the shipping was :)

Other Thoughts: Great gaming machine with room to upgrade if you want to.

2 out of 5 eggsNetworking Issues

Pros: Good specifications
2 Hard drive bays
Viewing angles are alright
number pad

Cons: Odd USB /headphone placement, its on the right where the mouse goes for most people, its annoying to have it there.
Touch pad could been better

Now the big issue I seem to be having is with the networking on it, unless I reinstall my drivers what seems like every week it seems to just start dropping any and all internet connections, a few things like games usually work while its dropped but it won't be able to browse.

I'm not sure if its an issue with the hardware(probably not) or the drivers(probably) but its really annoying to have to do this every so often just to have functioning internet.

If anyone else is having this problem a quick
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
is a temp fix for it.

Other Thoughts: Didn't buy from newegg

4 out of 5 eggsworth every penny.

Pros: 2 hd slots.
4 ram slots.
best graphics card available for this price range.
screen is beautiful bright and clear.
i5 does the job for gaming really well.
upgrading the hd space or ram is simple.
one bottom plate for everything.
keyboard is nice and comfortable.
track pad is nonstick.
my old laptaps track pad was hard to move your finger across.
runs rift with high settings @ 60 fps.
runs league of legends with high settings @ 60 fps.
runs fairly cool.
windows cdkey is embedded in the laptops hardware.

Cons: no windows disc or driver disc. did a reinstall of windows 8 to get it on an ssd/get rid of the bloatware. good thing I had windows 8 already. also windows 8 didn't recognize the wireless card till I got the drivers off acers site from my desktop. really wish they would at least throw a driver CD in.

to add another hd you need another bracket which costs $18 and doesn't come with the screws.

doesn't support raid.

Other Thoughts: definitely worth the money. I would have still bought it if I knew about my gripes beforehand. I just wish newegg would be more descriptive with the product info. the main reason I got this is to play games on when I leave home and to stream movies/tv. The big selling point was the upgradable hardware. two hd slots is rare in laptops of this price point and a very nice convenience as well as the 4 ram slots.

would recommend to any gamer who's going away to college or any gamer who travels a lot.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible

Pros: Hardware seems enticing.

Cons: Don't buy this garbage. Wiped to put windows 7 and installed all drivers from Acer's website and the thing does nothing but Blue screen. Acer will not help you at all. All I can say is you get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great.

Pros: Although my con section will be long, this laptop does exactly what I want it to do. It's a great machine for someone who wants something nice for work but is a little more serious about gaming than most. This laptop will do that for you without throwing down $800+ for a dedicated gaming laptop.

6GBs of RAM, the i5 and the 730M make this a good deal if you're looking for a semi-serious gaming laptop like I was. I wanted something that I could work on yet play more than solitaire on. Plays LoL just fine at max with 60 fps, however I will note that it only plays SC2 at medium and with the big screen it's kind of noticeable quality wise but not so much that it would turn me off from it.

The screen is huge and it looks fine. I've seen other reviews say they needed to adjust the screen but I didn't see a need to for mine. Colors are sharp and the picture is good.

The numpad included on the keyboard is also a big bonus, as someone who is used to typing numbers out on the numpad opposed to the number row, this addition is really nice.

It's pretty light and the backpack that came free with the laptop does a great job of helping me haul it around.

Cons: Glossy case, fingerprints will be everywhere.

Comes with a whole bunch of bloatware. It's pretty easy to get it all uninstalled or not to launch on startup but it does come with a lot of garbage.

The track pad isn't as smooth as you would expect a laptops to be. It seems to of gotten better the more I've used it but right out of the box my fingers weren't smoothly moving around on it.

Another note about the track pad is its location. It's located a little to the left of the center of the keyboard. This has been a little annoying to me because when I type the base of my left thumb keeps hitting it causing the cursor to click on whatever it's over. I believe you can disable the track pad but it's just something to note.

The last little thing I'll note are the arrow keys. They are pretty tiny, so if you use them a lot for gaming or what-have-you then I would just be aware. Luckily I have skinny fingers so it's not a huge deal for me but I can see someone with bigger fingers having a problem with them.

Other Thoughts: I didn't mention Windows 8 in the con like most because I knew it was going to be on this laptop. Honestly, I planned on scrapping Windows 8 but as an IT person I figured that I should get to know a little bit about it and so far it's been a pleasant experience. I think if people give 8 an honest chance then you'll be surprised that it's not as bad as what people talk about. However, if you don't like it then just slap 7 on it and it should be just fine.

Overall I really enjoy this laptop as something I can take to work and use as well as game in my down time as well. Great laptop for those looking for a good laptop to game on without throwing down $800+.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good!

Pros: Bought it for my son a few months before he went to college so he'd have time to get used to it. He loves it. Big screen. Full keyboard. Full numpad. Reasonably thin. Good price. Dedicated graphics. Minimal crapware to remove. He hasn't loaded any current demanding games yet. He has an older FPS that runs well. Office 2013 runs well on it.

Cons: It's really big. That computer bag you thought you were going to recycle for this machine probably won't fit. No backlit keys but none were specified. HD is not fast but my son hasn't complained about it.

Other Thoughts: I should have said my son loves it all except for Windows 8. He's getting used to that too. I taped a "WinKey shortcuts" cheat sheet below the numpad. That helped both him and myself a lot as the metro GUI is NOT intuitively obvious. The included AV license is only three months so be sure to upgrade before it expires.

5 out of 5 eggsPleasantly surprised.

Pros: Using the Nvidia 730m @ 1600x900 resolution this laptop plays
- TERA at high settings ~ 45fps
- Guild Wars 2 on High settings - locked 30fps
- Alan Wake maxed ~ 40fps
- Far Cry 3 Very High - 30fps

So far, its been playing every game I throw at it with decent graphical settings. The Intel HD4000 was able to play those games with decent settings as well.

Cons: 5400rpm HDD? They still make those?

The LCD screen viewing angles are kinda bad, which could be a built in privacy protector.

Other Thoughts: I added a 250gig SSD to boot windows and install all my games in. 5400rpm drive was just painfully slow.

-- Don't do it if you're not willing to lose your investment -
I overclocked the 730m from 724mhz to 922mhz and its doing good on temps. At the price, It doesnt really matter if it burns out faster than anticipated.
