3 out of 5 eggsTrading Savings for Annoyances

Pros: Good performance for the money

Good battery life

Good power connector shape, swivels with movement and has not worn down noticeably at all in a year

Doesn't get too hot at all; the left side-vent can compensate decently if the bottom vent has to be blocked for a short time

Good, medium-sized rubber feet, haven't crapped out on me since purchase, which is rare

Decent sound output

Convenient i/o ports

Surprisingly Solid chassis despite feeling a little cheap

Touchpad has good texture that will not hurt your fingers after prolonged use

Cons: I/O speeds are pretty awful. It's basically maxed out with normal use. Email client applications will occasionally bring your system to a crawl.

Wireless adapter did not play well out of box. The signal and connection would be fine to your router, but 100% packets would drop on any meaningful connection. I had to install updated drivers from the manufacturer site, but that fixed it.

Keyboard layout is strange, but you can get used to it.

Currency keys above the left and right arrow keys is a useless and obstructive feature.

You can't lower the volume via the keyboard with one hand because the arrow keys are too far from the only Fn key.

Touchpad performance is the worst I've ever seen. You'll fight with this touchpad forever, and if you work on this laptop and require reliability without a mouse, I really wouldn't bother with this one. I've been dealing with it, but I finally wrote this review just to get to these grievances when it almost ruined my day.

You will accidentally palm the touchpad, often, because it's placed just barely too far to the left, and seems to pick up on touches that are near the pad, not just on it. Software config options to compensate for palming do basically nothing. Typing will sometimes move the cursor somewhere else on the page as a result, and you will sometimes actually click something while typing.

If you're like me, you like scrolling and zooming gestures on your touchpad, but this touchpad will make you rage, because of the palming, and especially the next problem...

Sometimes, for no particular reason, your touchpad will get locked up and think you're still touching part of it. Turning the pad off and on does not always fix this right away despite some users saying it will. If you have gestures enabled, this will randomly cause zooming, scrolling, and whatever else you have configured. The input will also lag for a bit while the touchpad is throwing this tantrum, and you'll barely be able to do anything until it calms down, which is not always shortly.

Touchpad is just... terrible. Use a mouse, or don't buy this laptop.

Other Thoughts: I have been shocked with how well this machine performs considering what I paid. I do software development, often with a number of IDEs, command prompts, and dozens of browser tabs. There's slowdown, sometimes really bad, but you get what you pay for there, and it's manageable.

The touchpad problem is really enough to just not recommend this laptop unless you're one to always use a mouse. When it gives you problems, you'll be ready to throw the thing across the room.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible ACER Computer

Pros: Terrible - no pros - Windows 8 is a terrible operating system and this computer constantly losses internet connection on wireless. what a hassle to own it and try to use it.

Cons: DO NOT BUY ACER LAPTOP This one is poor quality and loses connection to the internet and will not reestablish internet connection - something wrong with the card

2 out of 5 eggsDecent Computer Until Harddrive Died

Pros: Great price for a fairly fast laptop.

Cons: Seagate harddrive manufactured in China. Those who don't know it's best to get Seagates from Thailand or really anyplace but China. Google it for details. The harddrive died after about 2 months of light use. Needless to say my wife had a bunch of family videos on it. Unfortunately, she didn't back them up.

Other Thoughts: I replaced the harddrive with a Western Digital 1TB (Made in Thailand no less). The computer is working great again. I'm keeping the Seagate to see if one of those recovering services can save the videos.

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolute Garbage

Pros: Nothing.

Cons: Purchased this unit for one purpose, to use with Fuel Mapping software for a race motorcycle that requires a PC. Since the day I received this unit it has not stopped crashing. Yesterday I timed my usage, out of 5 hours and 2 minutes, 4 hours and twelve minutes were spent frozen, restarting, crashing, and otherwise useless. I contacted Windows and Acer, I was told to contact New Egg. I did, and was told they cannot replace the unit because it is out on stock and discontinued, and they will not refund it because I didn't save the original packaging. I am now stuck with a computer that will not even load up anymore and out over $400. I also had to pay for a dyno tune service as the PC was unstable and I wasn't able to use it for its intended purpose, another $350 expense. I am utterly disgusted at the poor quality of not only the unit (My wife's 6 year old MacBook runs heaps better than this, and when it does run the macBook is exceptionally faster) and the customer service I received.

Other Thoughts: I will never make another purchase from this site again, and will be filing a court claim for reimbursement of my purchase, as well as the services and fees I had to pay due to the faulty unit.

3 out of 5 eggsSo far so good...

Pros: Layout, Screen size, keyboard isn't flunky, the key pad is great

Cons: Wireless, this has to be the worst wireless device I have in my entire house. Every laptop, phone, roku even connects to wifi better than this laptop. I can go away and come back and the wifi will say its connected but be dead. Every other device in the house is working. $150 router, an d every device is blazing device, this laptop wifi is horrible. I have to disable/enable every time to get it to function properly.

Other Thoughts: So far so good, love the processor and speed for the price.

4 out of 5 eggsAcer E1-571

Pros: Intel core i3, hyper-threaded for under $400? What isn't pro about that? Super fast; HDMI port. Inexpensive laptop for Intel quality.

Cons: Like the previous review, the wireless. I have configured, reconfigured and reconfigured the advanced configuration aspect of the wireless card and can get it to connect at 72MBS - at initialization....then drops back to 65. The Broadcom card it comes with sucks. Looking for a suitable replacement to get it to at least 150....

Windows 8; metro interface. Nice try in competing with Apple - but epic fail. Besides; the metro interface is not business friendly at all. Great for toying with personally; but not good for business.

Other Thoughts: I removed the Seagate thin hard drive it arrived with and replaced it with an old Momentus SSD/HDD hybrid 7200RPM; 32MB Cache (4GB SSD) 320GB drive. The HDD caddy is designed for the thin drive; you have to remove all of the buffers and plastic coating to use the caddy for another drive. Loaded W7 Pro x64 and it screams with the factory installed 4gb ram. 8GB ram (max upgrade) made it stupid fast...

Would have given it 5 eggs if it would have a better wireless card.

3 out of 5 eggsWindows 8 sucks

Pros: Price, value.

Cons: Windows 8

Other Thoughts: I gave this machine three stars to be fair to it. I really don't have a problem with the hardware. But Windows 8 is so crummy that it drops the overall impression of the computer. An article just came out today that blames a huge slump in PC sales on Windows 8. I believe it. Do yourself a favor and put Windows 7 on it. should work fine.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat machine for the price

Pros: Good hardware for the price I paid (on sale). Anything else at that price point was a 1.1GHz Celeron or something equally abysmal. Compared to other machines I was seeing at this price, a 2.4GHz i3 is a rocket ship. And certainly fast enough for what I need.

Good keyboard. Not the absolute best - there are some with better click action, and the layout of the arrow keys is questionable. But the click action is still pretty good (and definitely better than my last laptop, which cost twice as much when it was new), and having the separate number pad is great.

Touchpad is excellent. It has the right surface friction, picks up touches without issue, and supports multi-touch scrolling (I imagine this is pretty standard nowadays, but again my last laptop did not have this). Also, it has actual physical left and right-click buttons.

Battery life is good. 5-6 hours with light usage (word processing, web browsing, etc.).

Some bloatware, but nothing difficult to remove. And some of the pre-loaded software is actually useful. For instance, Acer has correctly identified that the procedure for shutting down Windows 8 is stupid, and has loaded a small app (with a launcher shortcut pre-pinned to the taskbar in Desktop mode) which, when launched, displays buttons for shut down, restart, log off, and the like. It takes a second or two to launch, but is still faster and less cumbersome than the normal Windows 8 shutdown procedure.

HDMI, combined with a button which turns off the built-in display (or at least, turns off the backlight). For my use case, 90% of which is watching Netflix in hotel rooms, this means I can hook up to the hotel TV and use it for Netflix's video and audio, and turn off the laptop display (no need to have it on in this scenario, all it would do is light up the room). It is, once again, something my previous machine couldn't do, and fits my needs perfectly.

Decent HDD and RAM for the price. However, there are easily accessible RAM and HDD slots if you decide otherwise.

Bigger battery than most others at its price point.

Cons: It isn't the most premium-feeling device in the world. The plastic has some flex to it, and you can tell it's inexpensive. Some people might not like this, although for my purposes it has no practical impact.

Other Thoughts: My old laptop was a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo machine with a GeForce 8400M. It primarily ran Linux, and during its life, I had upgraded the RAM (to 4GB), HDD (a WD Scorpio black), the wifi card (an Intel 3945ABG, which had better Linux drivers available than the bult-in card). So it wasn't really hurting for performance. But it developed a problem I couldn't resolve, and I had to replace it.

Unlike when I bought that machine, these days I don't really run any modern games on my laptop. Nowadays a laptop is just a Netflix and web browsing machine for when I'm traveling. So I mostly wanted something cheap, without going so cheap that what I got would be pathetically slow. I was keeping an eye out for the best machine I could get for not much money, and when this one went on sale it seemed to be the best option. So far, I do not regret the purchase at all.

4 out of 5 eggsNice, but for that networking issue.

Pros: Nice, inexpensive laptop. My introduction to Win 8 and it isn't horrible. Kind of flashy but workable. Plenty fast for our usage in retirement; email, web, and word processing. Also lots of features (USB ports, card interfaces, DVD player, etc.) making it a good machine to take on the road.

Cons: Wireless networking. What is the problem with this unit? While it connects fine, and seems stable enough, it will not connect above 65Mbps. My other three systems are all running a minimum of 150Mbps on the same router, sitting next to this laptop. Very odd to have so many users having so many wireless issues and not have them solved, or seemingly solvable. One star off for that.
Oh, and that keyboard. It is shifted to the left and I find myself typing "jr;;p" instead of "hello". It will take some getting used to.

Other Thoughts: Reading the other comments it would appear a cra#-shoot to send this back due to the network card not working properly, since about half of the complaints have been on this issue. I did check for new drivers and found none.
I am open to suggestions for a fix.
