3 out of 5 eggsGood Laptop, cannot recommend

Pros: i5 pulls very well, but does not clock down automatically as much as I would like - lowest is 1195 MHz
To save power and reduce temps, graphics are the HD 4000 on the CPU normally and switches to the 730M for more stressful applications
Has space for a second 2.5" HDD/SSD as well as two more RAM slots
A slower double tap acts as a held down mouse button so that you can drag and drop without it being awkward
Speakers are very OK
Full numpad
Plenty of external ports including HDMI and USB 3.0
Monitor hinge feels very sturdy
Entire laptop feels like it will last a while
Wireless N is plenty fast and reliable
Does every thing it should

Cons: TERRIBLE vertical viewing angles - my biggest complaint
Lowest brightness level is still very bright in a dark room
Trackpad scrolling is choppy and not smooth
This one is obvious, but it is big and was not intended to be very portable
There are no Caps, Num, and Scroll lock lights so you don't know when they are on and off directly
It takes two hands to adjust the volume and brightness
DVD drive is extremely noisy, however you can hold it,but that is quite annoying after a while
Glossy front and parts of inside are fingerprint magnets without considerable care taken to avoid it
Mountains of bloatware
Webcam is clearly not HD
The reflective coating on the monitor means you cannot use this comfortably outside or in a bright room
Windows 8

Other Thoughts: This is my first own laptop and I only really have my brother's 17" MacBook Pro to compare to, but this Aspire felt less refined with fewer bells and whistles. Maybe my comparison is unfair, but it is what I have to compare to.

One big thing I liked about the MacBook Pro is that it had a battery charge meter built into it so the battery charge was easy to see from the outside whereas the Aspire's battery life can only be determined through the OS. The not having a caps lock light or indicator is very annoying at times and the MacBook Pro had much smoother trackpad scrolling capability.

The battery life wasn't bad considering it's size. Youtube videos over wifi reduced it to 2 hours 45 max, but unstressful applications in airplane mode allowed well over 4 hours of life.

From a hardware standpoint, it's great, but if you plan on using your DVD drive frequently on this, consider alternatives.

I also think that Windows 8 best fits on tablets and touchscreens - not home or personal computing. I installed Windows 7 after a week. That being said, Windows 8 uses much less RAM and will boot up in about half the time as Windows 7.

Benchmarking showed that this was only a touch faster than my desktop CPU and RAM side, but not graphically; no Crysis for this. Desktop: i3 2120, 4GB DRR3 1333, AMD Radeon HD 7750 Black Edition

However, the reason I cannot recommend this laptop is that even if you are viewing it from a distance of about two feet, the top inch or two will be noticeably darker than it should be and the bottom inch or two will be noticeably lighter than it should be. If something like that doesn't bother you and the price is right, buy this Aspire, however I won't give this a thumbs up because of that.

That 's all, everything of note I hope I included.
