3 out of 5 eggsupdate previous review

Pros: decent laptop for my wife - surfing web, email, and office productivity, It is quiet. The air flow system seems well designed - not much heat or fan noise.
BUT know what you are getting. NO OPTICAL drive, limited UEFI BIOS.

Cons: The second RAM slot is integrated into the PCB, but there is no bracket, so you can't install a second RAM module. I spoke to Acer support about this and basically they said 'tough luck' - buy an 8 gig single RAM module. NOT satisfactory.

Other Thoughts: This is a UEFI BIOS with a very simple interface. We had to update our BIOS (from Acer) to get backwards compatibility for legacy BIOS. Like all modern Windows products (UEFI), there is no sticker with a Windows 8 product key on it. The Windows product key is stored in the UEFI ACPI table which is hidden in the inaccessible EFI (boot) partition. This means that when we upgraded our HDD to an SSD and migrated the OS to it, even though it was the exact same hardware (with just the new SSD) it would NOT activate. We had to call MS to activate Windows - ridiculous. This is on MS, not Acer (the OEMS).

4 out of 5 eggsQuad core is slow

Pros: Great price for a quad core.

Cons: NO DVD drive, which I did not notice in the description, so my fault. But I verified that this. machine is a quad core, but I have an 1.7gh i5 that runs faster, which is a dual core

Other Thoughts: I guess that you get what you pay for in computer parts, so if you are willing to buy an external dvd drive too, then I still think this is worth it for the price and relatively slow speed.

2 out of 5 eggsBEWARE - only 1 memory slot enabled

Pros: decent laptop for my wife to surf the net, email, and do office productivity

Cons: comes with only 4 gigs of RAM. I bought a second 4 gig module to install and although a second memory slot clearly exists in the PCB of the Mobo, it is NOT enabled. To save 5 cents Acer did not install the plastic holder piece or clips for a second memory module - ridiculous! - BIG FAIL!
Many memory websites (Crucial, Kingston, etc.) list two memory slots for this laptop as well.
I will contact Acer about this and post their response

Other Thoughts: Windows 8 is junk - just eye candy for the IPad/smart phone generation.
I put this more on MS than the PC manufacturers.
Unfortunately, there are no drivers available for a Windows 7 downgrade on this laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsGood laptop for the price

Pros: I got this for my brother because his old Gateway (A three year old Intel i3) was falling apart. The main reason I chose this one is because of the quad-core Pentium. So far it seems to be doing very well. It performs as well as if not better than the old i3 and is half the price. Another nice thing is how thin and light it is. Although I'm not sure if this is really a pro because all laptops recently have been getting thin and light.

Cons: There are only three problems I have with this laptop. The first is the way the monitor is attached to the laptop. It looks like it's designed to fail just as it did on the old Gateway. The second is how flimsy it is. I know this is how they make it light, but I don't think this would hold up very well if it were to be used as a school laptop or something similar. The third problem is Windows 8. While it's better then I thought it would be, it's still worse than Windows 7.

Other Thoughts: It's a very good laptop for the price and I'm sure that with a little bit of care, it will last a few years.

2 out of 5 eggsNo DVD-Rom!

Pros: Works great as far as windows 8 is concerned.

Cons: Can't install Windows 7 without a ton of extra work. The Missing DVD-Rom is just a waste of time. They go through the trouble of putting a blank in the location. It would almost be as cheap as putting in a cheap burner. I normally do not check the DVD-Rom in a 15.6" Laptop as they normally come with one installed. I will be checking from now on.

2 out of 5 eggsDead on Arrival

Pros: In terms of pure specifications it is the best laptop for its price range, but you do indeed get what you pay for.

Cons: Body and screen hinges do not feel as solid as one would expect and the product arrived with a failing hard drive.

Other Thoughts: IF I had received this laptop in working order I would have rated this a 4-5. However as the hard drive is failing on the same day it was delivered and now I must deal with Acer's customer support, and it seems I have to pay out of pocket to have it shipped to Texas just to get it repaired, I cannot possible give this a good review.

Again if it had arrived functional I would have given this a much higher rating.
