4 out of 5 eggsStill works great, but price has gone up a bit.

Pros: Fast, quiet, long lasting battery, Windows 8.1 is not that hard to get used to, excellent screen.
Purchased for under $600.00 so my other review needs to consider this fact. I tried to update the original review, but could not find a function for it.

Cons: Touchpad is sensitive, price has increased dramatically since my original review. Fear of refurbished unit caused me to purchase a 1 year NewEgg warranty.

Other Thoughts: I've seen this model of laptop advertised on the Acer website for more than $1400.00, so the current price still seems like a good deal. However, I purchased my laptop for less than $600.00, and the price is much higher now.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked alright, while it worked.

Pros: Very slim
GREAT display

Cons: Speakers aren't very good
Trackpad is a tad glitchy

Other Thoughts: At first, I put Ubuntu 14.04 on this laptop, because coming from OSX, I figured Windows would be too hard for me to get acclimated to (and I use Ubuntu on a somewhat regular basis). I also put an SSD in it, and it worked very well, save for some glitchy trackpad responsiveness in Ubuntu.

Later, I put Windows 8.1 back on this thing (just put the original hard drive back in), and I'm very impressed with Windows 8.1. Besides a couple typography issues, it works very well on this laptop, even with a HDD inside.

46 days after my purchase, I went to plug the charger in, and the laptop emitted a loud beep once per second. Seems like the battery is malfunctional already. I called Newegg, who referred me to Acer. I submitted a claim through Acer, who referred me to 'LSI Teleplan'. I submitted a claim through them, and they stated it was denied, due to the fact that "Our Limited Warranty does not cover batteries or any expendable parts."

Um, a laptop is an expendable part. So that warranty nonsense makes no sense, and seems like it's from a company who doesn't want to pay out on claims. Newegg offered to give me a credit of $80 for a new charger and battery, so I hope that fixes the problem, but I don't know if it will. If it doesn't, hopefully my AMEX warranty will pull through to get my money back for this (now) dud.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Machine for Price

Pros: Looks brand new. Great 1080p screen. Fan quiet when it comes on during heavy load. Long battery life at light loads. Touchpad usable. Good memory size and hard drive size.

Cons: Time needed to upgrade to Win 8.1

4 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good!

Pros: Fast processor, large screen, back-lit keyboard, long power cord.

Cons: Single surface touchpad (no separate buttons for right and left clicking), makes getting a right-click action a pain.

Other Thoughts: The 15.6 measurement turned out to be a lot bigger than I expected. I guess I'm old and I'm used to a 15" screen meaning 1" of the edges being unusable black space.

Completely forgot about the touchscreen ability until I shoo'd away a bug and the screen jumped (freaked me the hell out!).

I did pay for the 1 year extended warranty, just not ready to gamble with the "refurbished" stigma.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic deal

Pros: -Fantastic screen: once you try a full 1080p screen on this 15.6'', you'll wonder how people even get work done on those typical 1366x738 resolutions. The extra screen space is amazing and definitely worth the money. The brights are bright, and the screen is incredibly sharp. There is an immense amount of screen real estate to utilize despite this being on 15.6''

With a glass make, the screen definitely looks very high quality, not like a cheapo-plastic shell.

-Portability; incredibly light (less than 5lb) and thin (less than 1in I believe), makes the day a lot easier on my back as I carry this from class to class.

-Build quality is great: super slick laptop, feels extremely sturdy, and the overall presentation and build quality of this laptop just feels very high.

-Battery: I use my laptop throughout the day, sometimes with wi-fi off, other times to browse the web. On a full charge, I can easily squeeze in at least four hours of productive time, if not more than that. At the writing of this review, I have 39% charge left, estimating around 2 hours and 40 minutes left, not to mention that I started the day off with about 65% charge. Given my needs as a college student, you definitely will be able to get A LOT of work and general internet browsing before you'll need to plug in (if even). Take note, however, I enjoy using my laptop at pretty much 10-20% brightness only- any higher and it begins to irritate my eyes, so I might have somewhat inflated battery times due to this.

-Speakers: nothing phenomenal to win awards, but the music sounds great and I can make sense very clearly of the things I need to listen to when I need to.

Keyboard: the keys have a decent and satisfying amount of travel, they feel light, but I can type very accurately and satisfactorily with this keyboard no problem. Comes with a number pad, so that is always a plus, and is also back lit as well (not the brightest, but I'm not complaining).

For regular college and student uses, this laptop definitely fits the bill and goes above and beyond.

Cons: Touch pad is a bit disappointing as its definitely feeling cheaper than the rest of the computer. It's not a deal breaker as there are wireless mouses, or you can even satisfactorily use the touch pad as your main means of moving the cursor, the only problem I have is that it does not feel incredibly strong, and pressing down the buttons does move the cursor- maybe my touch pad is a tad too sensitive? It feels nice in the hands otherwise, definitely not a huge issue.

Other Thoughts: Definitely worth my money as I bought this as a refurb for $550 after rebate.

The i7 4500u gets the job done and does everything you would need it to, short of playing video games, but if you were looking for a gaming laptop, you wouldn't be looking at this anyways. For my purposes of browsing the web, watching videos, and occasional to often use of programming software such as Matlab, Python, etc, this laptop works fantastically- as I said again, the real estate offered by the 1080p screen makes coding and number crunching a lot easier and more convenient than a regular 1366x738 screen.

5 out of 5 eggs1080p touchscreen of awesomeness

Pros: So far, pleased with this refurb. Shows no signs of past use. The 1080P screen is great. Touchscreen is nice to have option. All the USB3/HDMI/Ethernet ports are there. None of the silly stuff -- optical drive, discrete graphics -- that tend to add weight and battery drain.

Cons: Manufacturers should be using SSDs in laptops. Takes about 12 seconds to boot Windows 8.1. For me hard to justify upgrading now, but glad to read others have had no problems swapping in an SSD. Comes with Windows 8.0 installed. Get ready for a half day running windows updates. Luggable weight, but not for those looking for an Ultrabook.

Other Thoughts: Overall close to how I would custom configure a laptop for me.

2 out of 5 eggsThe machine looks good but it came short on a few items

Pros: Nice 1080p screen, lightweight enough for me. The construction is sturdy enough where I feel like I am not going to break with my larger hands. I think it's quick at processing most of what I need. I am by no means a power user but like responsive systems, slow ones just make me anxious.

Cons: I am a bit dissapointed by the amount of noise this machine makes. Now a days, I expected something quieter but maybe I should have gone Apple instead of PC. The fan comes on when it's idle and just the OS has been loaded or I've closed all applications. When I am doing things on the computer it can be quiet for a long time and the fan never turns on.

The Problem: I've had the worst luck connecting to the internet on it. At first it would stay connected for a while and then the internet would slow down. Now it connects for like 10 seconds and then it slows down to the point where the internet is not usable. I try to reconnect and the machine tells me it can connect to my router. I troubleshooted the issue on my own, even replaced my router but I still got the same result. All my other machines and even some which are further from my wireless router can connect just fine, some of which are 4 to 5 years older. (I've experienced this connectivity issue at the Junior College where I study, the laptop did not connect but other students were able to go online, frustrating).

I've sent the machine to the Acer Repair Center, twice, and the issue still continues. I am going to send it in again. This will be the third time sending it in. If the machine still does not function properly, they said they would start a replacement process, so I can get a new laptop all together.

The service people at Acer are nice. If I am not able to resolve the issue, I may just have to sell the machine. The screws on its underside are already starting to look barren (wasted) probably from the opening and closing of it at the service center, which takes away from it's sleek appeal.

Other Thoughts: Per the previous review suggestions, I will try putting an SSD and see if this quiets down the machine.

I bought the unit brand new from Microsoft.

5 out of 5 eggsA Linux User's Dream, A Great Laptop

Pros: I have been in search of a nice laptop with 1920x1080, Intel graphics (for Linux compatibility), and i7 processor, good build quality, and planned-out construction and I have found it!

First of all, this works 100% with Ubuntu 14.04. No driver installation. All the hotkeys work great. Even the touchscreen! Right out of the box.

The screen is sharp and has a ton of real-estate, as the 1920x1080 provides on a 15.6" screen.

I like the placement of the fan and other components. I had a laptop one time that blew hot air on my hand. How stupid! This has a fan on the bottom.

It is EASY to replace RAM and the hard drive. Take out the screws on the bottom and a cover comes off giving you access to everything. I've had laptops that required you to take the keyboard off to get to the Hard Drive (dell consumer model). Glad this trend is going away.

The speakers are loud and are exceptional laptop qualiity. Not beats, but good enough to get the song out.

The laptop is sturdy and feels like a Macbook.

As far as it being refurbished, it looked brand new. I could tell someone cleaned it with something like Windex, but there were no markings. I think these are probably returns that were used for a few minutes and taken back.

Cons: The two cons are the fan and the hard drive.

With Windows 8 and the 5400 RPM drive that came wiith it, the fan would come on. It was not by any means loud, but it was noticeable. If you are picky, this may be a dealbreaker, but I would have learned to live with it.

The 5400 RPM drive is the bottleneck of the laptop. I replaced the hard drive with a SSHD and it helped any potential performance issues. This is the drive I used: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178340 I also notice the fan coming on less because of it.

Other Thoughts: You will want to purchase a 16 gb usb drive to make a recovery disk. This disk should not be used for any other purposes.
