1 out of 5 eggsMaybe I'm the anomaly, but be warned

Pros: The actual model line is a nice, sturdy, business rugged Thinkpad. Every one I have been shipped is actually coming with a 2.8GHz CPU, which is a nice bonus. So far they have all run cool and quiet.

Newegg returns department: Best in class.

Cons: Now the bad: I am currently on my third return with this product (and on hold with returns again). Now I am entirely used to getting the occasional dud when purchasing a refurb mobile device from anyone, but three in a row? All functional defects, not cosmetic. First T400 came with a defective HDD and screen artifact. Second T400 came with defective keyboard and screen artifact. Third and current T400 has come with a non-functioning mousepad and the wrong power supply, which is a real shame because it was the best looking of the bunch.

All machines have arrived in a very well used condition, cosmetically, if appearance matters to your purchase.

Other Thoughts: On paper this is a good deal. The other reviews for this product at the time of my posting are all positive. It is statistically possible I just got a bad run of luck. Lemons happen even with new products.

However; considering the types of defects I am seeing, I highly suspect these machines are not being properly quality tested from the vendor Newegg is purchasing from, or at least the QA department has problems, to say the least.

It's just as equally possible that the average person that is purchasing this product is not throwing it on the diagnostic bench as soon as it comes out of the box so maybe I'm actually representative of the average purchaser.

I advise caution if you purchase. At least do yourself a big favor and perform some very cursory diagnosis and examination of your machine if you decide to buy.

Just in case my story isn't the anomaly.

Good luck.

5 out of 5 eggslenovo thinkpad t400

Pros: refurb, but appears as new. bright display, quick processor and a somewhat compact unit. no fluffware, just a clean windows install. unit was designed for win vista, hence the dual core 2.5 gig processor. somewhat underpowered with only 2 gigs of ram, however is very upgradeable. will discuss that later.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: upgraded to a 256 gig ssd and 8 gig of ram.....totally different unit now....whizzes through any task and as I am not a gamer....don't know... I would recommend this to a friend and am thinking about getting another for my 16 year old grandson

5 out of 5 eggsLuck of the draw on laptops

Pros: This particular unit came with a 250 GB drive. Also, this is a 1440x900 resolution screen. Very bright. Very bold colors.
Lightweight. Windows 7 premium freshly loaded and still needs activation (sticker on bottom). Microsoft authorized refurbisher did the work. Unit is clean. Cannot tell it is used. Battery holds a charge and not worn down as expected. (seems new).

Cons: As another reviewer mentioned, I too have the slight hair surface mark on the upper part mid-center screen and a hot pixel dead center (red). The original power converter is a generic brand which gets quite hot. It does charge however.

Other Thoughts: I think it's a fine laptop. I do also think the first reviewer is incorrect; At least "this" laptop will do 8 GB Ram. Go research on a popular memory manufacturer that is "crucial" to the PC business and see. States clearly 8 GB in up to 4GB modules. Even though I do have the hairline mark on screen (about 2 cm) and a hot pixel dead center of screen, it is still a venerable workhorse and well reconditioned. It's not a barn burner with speed, but definitely snappy (with only the 2 GB). Recommended. I bought because my older machine had a hinge problem and I fixed it TWICE (once on my dime) from a laptop manufacturer with terrible customer service and initials that "might seem like" (How Poor) in their name...I will never do business with those guys again.

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT VALUE FOR PRICE

Pros: Great price. Upgradable to 4 GB (MAX). Worked out of the box with minimal issues.

Cons: This is a refurb so it expected to have some scratch and dents. There is a hairline scratch on the screen which looks like a 4cm human hair. I finally no longer try to wipe the "hair" off. The battery is heavy and sticks out at a funny angle. I've named the laptop R2-D2 because on startup it beeps repeatedly like a key is stuck. But if I press ESC it continues on with no issues and boots up fine. CMOS was upgraded, but still very limited. But if you are not a tweak freak like myself this doesn't matter.

Other Thoughts: I upgraded the memory to 1x4GB and this works great.

5 out of 5 eggsVery pleased with this laptop.

Pros: Fast processor, good screen, hard drive larger than advertised, came with largest battery available. No damage or blemishes.

Cons: Well, it's a used laptop, and it shows a little wear; loose hinges, that sort of thing. A used laptop is always a gamble.

Other Thoughts: Originally built for Vista, which explains the fast processor, and since I'm not wasting all that power just to run the OS, all the better for me. Came with a 215 gig drive, not 160, and what looks like the nine cell battery. The battery looks odd sticking out the back, but it should last long enough to watch a movie if I choose to. This machine installed 148 Windows updates faster than any machine I've ever owned.
