1 out of 5 eggsMissing SSD, Fragile Case, Poor HDD

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418222) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i5 4200H (2.80GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Once you replace the 5400 rpm HDD it will perform well.

Cons: It says 8GB SSD but there was no SSD to be found. Also, the 5400 rpm HDD is horrible and is a huge bottleneck. I replaced the HDD with a Samsung 250GB SSD and I saw a huge improvement. Be careful about opening it up though, the case is extremely cheap and can easily crack. While I was replacing the HDD, I very carefully opened up the case and still had some small pieces of plastic break off. Luckily I was still able to screw it back together, but now I know how fragile this thing is.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazed

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418222) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i5 4200H (2.80GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: I bought this after selling my macbook pro and I must say that this laptop blows the mac out of the water. I have been able to run games on it at high to ultra settings depending on the game. but the GTX 860m is an amazing graphics card in my opinion.

Cons: my only complaint with the laptop is that the trackpad needs work and they cut a corner on the screen.

Other Thoughts: All of my other tech friends are also amazed at the build quality which is solid. a must buy for the price and quality. Lenovo sure knows how to make a laptop.

1 out of 5 eggsMissing 8GB Solid State Drive

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418222) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i5 4200H (2.80GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Good for gaming.

Cons: The laptop didn't come with an 8GB solid state drive as advertised. Not sure what to do about that.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid little laptop

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418222) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i5 4200H (2.80GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Sleek design, zippy gaming, loads of space, hybrid drive, and decent sound.

I didn't realize how thin this laptop was until I pulled it out of the box. It's really thin and sleek. That said, it still seems like a durable design. The screen hinges are stout, and the overall quality feels real solid, which is impressive given how thin it is.

It is also very easy to open up for upgrades. 7 screws and 4 hidden clips, and you have access to the ENTIRE computer.

Innovative and effective cooling.

No optical drive! - yes, I consider this a pro. The only time I used the optical drive on my previous laptop was to accidentally eject it, then push it back in.

Cons: Windows 8. It's for tablets, not computers.

Many have cited the screen as being a con, and I cannot disagree, but it's not as terrible as some make it seem. Yes, it's best viewed straight on, so it's bad for multiple viewers, but from the optimal angle, it's a good picture.

Fingerprint city. If you want it to always look pristine, keep some wipes nearby. It's still sexy, even with the fingerprints, though.

Other Thoughts: I immediately replaced the 1TB hybrid drive with a solid state, and downgraded (read: upgraded) to Windows 7. I've been very happy with the performance of this laptop, especially given I got the dual-core model. Most games run quite well on medium-high settings.

I also do a lot of LAMP development, and C# development. Jetbrains and Microsoft IDE's are both very crisp and responsive on this machine.

NOTE: For those of you having issues with video drivers upon re-install of the operating system, you MUST install the Intel HD Graphics 4600 driver BEFORE the nVidia 860m driver. Also, the nVidia 3DVision driver component at the time of this writing is faulty and causes blue-screens whenever Chrome runs Adobe Flash (which is all the time). It probably has other issues as well, so opt for 'Custom Installation', and disclude the 3DVision driver when installing the nVidia drivers.

My overall feeling of this laptop is that I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good machine in this price range. It multitasks well, and games well.

Newegg rocks.
The end.

4 out of 5 eggsLenovo Y50 I5 4200H 15.6"

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418222) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i5 4200H (2.80GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Great laptop. Very powerful, excellent video card. Build quality is great with sleek asthetics.

Cons: Screen is a weak. Like others have mentioned the screen is the weakest link and can look washed out :(. The laptop performance is 9/10. The screen is 4/10.

Other Thoughts: For the money this laptop is hard to beat. Overall I would recomend it. Even if I replace the screen it is a fantastic value.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat budget gaming laptop

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418222) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i5 4200H (2.80GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Great GPU
nice styling and not too flashy
Has all the features a gaming laptop needs (1080p, GPU, options for more memory, backlit keyboard)

Cons: SSHD it comes with was lacking (took 3 mins to boot up every time, i never could figure out why)
Only one 2.5" slot and no mSATA slots
Screen not great quality, only fair

Other Thoughts: This is an awesome gaming laptop when you consider the price point. I got it for $889 at the time I wrote this but I see it went back up. I went from a top of the line monster (SLI, RAID SSD and RAID HD and 4 memory slots, $4.5k) to this to save some money. I had to change out the SSHD, I thought I could deal with it but I just couldn't. Once I put an SSD in the whole machine was fast and boot time went to 7 seconds (Win8 fast boot). The screen I can deal with, and with an SSD it flies in day to day tasks I am finding most of the games I play I can play at 1080p ultra or maybe dial down to very high. Honestly it outperforms what I felt a sub $900 laptop would do.

3 out of 5 eggsBang for your buck

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418222) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i5 4200H (2.80GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This is a awesome computer if you are going for a gaming computer under $1,000. The graphics card is a monster and you wont find a better one in any other laptop under $1,000. Other than the graphics card, the hardware is average.

The overall look of the laptop is sleek and cool, the keyboard has good button placement along with a nice red background keyboard light.

The sound is decent.

Cons: Fingerprint magnet.

Slow WiFi connection, probably a issue with the drivers, lenovo is notorious for terrible drivers. I would recommend a fresh OS install not just for new drivers but because of the massive amount of bloatware that comes with the computer.

The track-pad is terrible, you WON'T be able to game unless you have a mouse, if you can game on this laptop with the track-pad then you are a monster. It clicks when touched, the right click must be hit in a small space and it zooms in fully at the worst times.

The screens colors and lighting aren't the best, but there are tutorials on YT and other sites that show you how to change the screen for ~$110.

Battery life is around ~2 hours but I'm sure it varies widely.

Other Thoughts: Ehh, my expectations were set high.

3 out of 5 eggsGood....but..

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418222) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i5 4200H (2.80GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Great look, feels fast, love the keyboard

Cons: Screen was a major issue, display is lacking. I am now having a major issue where the laptop just shuts off....kind of odd as it happens randomly and while I am working. Not sure what to do about this...

Other Thoughts: I loved it but now I am worried the laptop will die within 6 months. the random shut downs are not good

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Deal for the Specs

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418222) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i5 4200H (2.80GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Price - Got it for $870 with the Visa Promo code. Doesn't get much better than that with these specs.

Shipping - Chose the free shipping, but it got to my house in less than 48 hours after ordering it.

Looks - I love the look of it. It's thin and stylish. The red keyboard lights also look very nice and help when it's dark.

Graphics - So far the few games I've tried on it run at high settings with good FPS (MetroLL, BF4, NFS Rivals, I even tried RuneScape but that doesn't take much)

Sound - For a laptop it sounds pretty decent

Cons: - Fingerprint magnet for sure

- The screen is not the best, but it's not as bad as some of the other reviews make it out to be.

- Only one HDD bay. Would have loved to add an SSD, but I need the space and 1TB SSD's aren't affordable yet.

- Bloatware. Accidentally deleted a driver when deleting useless programs so I had to go back to Lenovo's site and re-download it

Other Thoughts: I don't really like gaming on a laptop, but I needed one for an upcoming deployment, and this was by far the best deal out there. The only other laptop I've ever owned was a MacBook so that's all I had this to compare against.

Also for people that despise Windows 8.1, just install the ClassicShell program and it's just like W7.
