3 out of 5 eggsResolution too high for Adobe programs

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 4K (59425943) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" 4K Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: I like everything about this computer except for its "gamer" design.

Cons: The 4k resolution, just like the high-res of the toshiba kirabook, makes the computer uselss for anyone using Adobe Creative Cloud / Suite programs. No amount of trickery with monitor resolution, text sizes, and ui font sizes would make for a good accross the machine viewing experience. The text is so tiny in photoshop that I had to be about 10" away from the screen.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid machine with a few minor buts...

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 4K (59425943) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" 4K Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: 4k, ssd, solid video card, 16gig mem. Basically the specs for the price - about 1k

Cons: Yellows are iffy and a tremendous amount of bloatware. Frankly, I've never seen so much junk preinstalled.

Other Thoughts: I've only had it for a couple of days and have been busy cleaning out the unnecessary software. Unlike one of the reviewers earlier, who wiped the sys and did a clean load, I am not really willing to go that route just looking to free up some of the prime SSD real estate and cut down on sys resource usage.
Once I get it in full operational mode I will update the review with the newer findings

5 out of 5 eggsAwsome

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 4K (59425943) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" 4K Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This is an overall awesome laptop. We purchased it for our son whom is off to college next fall. He is a heavy gamer and he has been able to play all his online games without any issues at all.

Cons: None so far.

4 out of 5 eggsGood value for the money

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 4K (59425943) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" 4K Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Solid Build with an Apple Computer kind of feel. Metal bottom and Top with a sculpted finish was a real shock when I took it out of the box.
Extremely Fast in every category.
Dual Video Cards...(Intel for HD4600 For low power and nVidia for high power)

Cons: MUSTARD YELLOWS everyone has said it and it is true!!! This screen has a tough time reproducing colors. It does not look bad but it could be better.

Other Thoughts: The only issue I have with this laptop is the color reproduction of the screen.

4 out of 5 eggsI like this thing

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 4K (59425943) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" 4K Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: -great hardware for the price
-great build and feel
-looks cool
-fairly light and mobile
-runs games wonderfully(for a laptop)

Cons: -mustard yellows
-screen locked at 48hz
-scaling issues(which can be taken care of, fortunately)

Other Thoughts: I love his laptop. I am a PC gamer, but this laptop does the job for me when I can't be at my desktop. The few issues I have with this product can be overlooked due to price of what you get.

The yellow color issue is not too big of a deal for me. The refresh rate is locked at 48hz, unfortunately. However, mirroring the screen to a television or separate monitor will remedy this.

If you are buying this for the 4k resolution and you'd like to play games, you will be disappointed. However, if you are doing media editing, this should satisfy you(except for the yellows)

4 out of 5 eggsLenovo Y50 4K

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 4K (59425943) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" 4K Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: 4K display is great. Extremely fast and somewhat works with Linux. The price was extremely good when I purchased it.

Cons: The 4K display is also its worst enemy. No operating system including Windows seems to be able to handle it well. I know that it is not purely the operating system's fault but in the case of dual monitors it truly is. There is no way to have one DPI for one monitor and another DPI for the internal display. This forces user to sacrifice 4k on the internal to make the two displays work well together.

Dual booting not recommended unless you are an expert. If you want a bigger ssd than the 256 you must clone before hand. DD worked well.

Other Thoughts: I waited to write this review for a while so I could have a fair amount of time to evaluate computer. For anybody thinking about purchasing and using this with Linux. Fedora 21 works ok you have to manually set the display resolutions if you are going to be extending the monitor. Other than that everything seemed to work right out of the box if you use the Intel chip for display. The NVidia can be used with a bit of work. As a dev machine it is top notch.

1 out of 5 eggsLenovo can't currently replace screen if there is a problem.

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 4K (59425943) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" 4K Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Price is low for the specs.

Cons: Purchased laptop in the summer.
My screen developed white spots (not dead pixels) about an inch wide and smudgy looking after 3 months. I called tech support and they think it's related to pressure on the screen, despite the fact it happened overnight while the laptop was simply sitting on a shelf (the may be correct, I don't know). An IT person at works thinks it's oil damage or something to the upper layer of the screen. There is also a decent amount of light bleed around the edges.
Tech support told me as it is physical damage, it is not covered by the warranty. They also informed they do not sell the 4k screen as a separate part. The tech support person tried to play this as a cautionary tale to buy the extra warranty, but, told me they do not have the screen in stock at all, and, even if I sent it in for repair, they don't know when they will get it, thus, how long it would take to repair the computer.
This is a problem I've never had on far cheaper laptops that I've taken when traveling around the world
Basically, they can't offer proper support/repair on this laptop, so, consider this when purchasing.

Other Thoughts: I know 4k screens are relatively new, but, you should really have support available for such a pricey laptop.
I paid extra to get a 4k display, and, now its kind of useless.

Also, the video card isn't powerful enough to actually play games in 4k and the scaling of Windows 8 actually makes 4K kind of useless.

3 out of 5 eggsAll bark, no bite.

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 4K (59425943) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" 4K Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: * 4K "UHD" Screen
* SSD from Lite-ON has fast read/write
* External CD Burner/Reader
* Nice Quality Keyboard
* Gigabit Ethernet
* Good quality Feel
* Light up Keyboard (If you like that)
* UEFI Compatible
* Nice quality Speakers
* Alot of function buttons
* Full size keyboard

Cons: * Windows 8.1
This screen does NOT like yellow. The yellow is a mustard.
The screen is also locked down and wont go up to 60Hz.
Overall the screen kills it. High res but horrible color reproduction.
So far no other problems.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing hardware but out of the box it's C r a p

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 4K (59425943) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" 4K Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: 4k res is beautiful
sound is excellent
Windows 8.1 usb recovery disk
(this gives you the option to boot your recovery on a 16gb flash drive) way better then those c r a p p y disks, or multiple disks if you don't have enough space.

Graphics.. amazing
games amazing
48fps, (is fine)

fast
computer is pretty zippy from cold boot takes about 8 seconds
from hybernation about 3-4 seconds

price $1180 for a 4k 16gb ram 256 ssd i7 gen4 proc (can't hardly beat that)
backlit keyboard is red.
chicklet keyboard is nice
touchpad is really nice
the brushed aluminum back is really sharp!

Cons: lenovo bloatware (picture / power saving / their c r a p p y graphics optimization was all c r a p )

You should / have to update graphics card to make it work as well as it should out of the box.

well I got it on special and it came with 8.1 home, or standard idk I nuked that. I needed to be able to add it to my domain for work. So I put 8.1 with downgrade rights in case I couldn't stand it anymore. That took all of 2 days.
The graphics when playing videos is terrible it jumps like crazy The "rendering to lower quality" is c r a p . It literally jumps. and makes people in the videos look like their having seizures.

To format this bad boy be prepared to jump through some hoops
It wont recognize usb drives to boot to.
it comes with UEFI bios booting.

step 0 learn how to boot to bios lol (there is a fancy button), it's either that or while shutting down you have to hold shift, then when it's coming up hit f1 (setup) or f12 boot order)
Step 1 enable power on USB
step 2 disable UEFI
step 3 change boot priority
step 4 disable secure boot
step 5 save / restart
step 6 boot into boot order (your usb drive should be recognized now).
step 6. you can finally boot into your OS disk.

Other Thoughts: If your a computer person then yes. (yes)
you can figure out how to change OS's (yes)
you like tweaking hardware (yes)
you like high performance machines (yes)

If your a end user, or you just want things to work outside of the box then NO WAY.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop for the money

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 4K (59425943) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" 4K Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Fast, quick boot up, speedy SSD, plays most games at 1920x1080 w/o a problem and the IPS display looks awesome compared to the other screen options of the Y50. Surprisingly most of the drivers were up to date, just the Nvidia driver needed to be updated. Even comes with an external DVD writer.

Cons: 1. Initially wondered why the network speed (wireless and wired)was slow. Then found some software Lenovo installed (visual discovery) that monitors all the network traffic, slowing the download speed to a quarter of it's normal speed. Removed the software and everything picked right back up.

2. Games played at 4K had fps at 10 to 20, so I play in FHD

3. The machine is a finger print magnet, so bring a cleaning cloth

4. Battery Life: 3hrs surfing the web, flash games brought that down to 1.5hrs and full blown games brought that down to 45 min. Nothing was turned off and the screen was set at it's brightest.

5. Display is fixed at 48Hz

Other Thoughts: Off color yellows: fixed with a quick calibration of the colors on the display properties

I set up 2 display modes- 4K for most day to day stuff and 1080 for gaming and programs that don't like 4k. The 1080 mode works well for pretty much everything.

Note for gamers: Direct X isn't installed, so don't forget it

Although, I had listed a host of cons, none were a show stopper and the overall experience of the machine is quite good.
