2 out of 5 eggsFrequent freezes and hiccups

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: i7 8-cores and 16GB RAM. Backlit keyboard is nice. Sound is good for a laptop.

Cons: When playing music or using Word or other applications, the laptop very frequently "pause" or "freeze", this is especially when playing MP3 music because the music will paused or stopped for 1-2 secs between every 1-2 minutes because the drive is "too busy" reading, this is shown in the task manager performance screen there is a near 100% spike of disk usage every time the pause occurs. It is very frustrating. I am not sure if this is a defect of the fusion drive or just because of the computer model. Buyers please beware.

Other Thoughts: I like this laptop overall, but the hiccups or freezes is very frustrating and a big disappointment. I am surprised this was not found by QA and if so, why the company still let this defect slipped by.

4 out of 5 eggsBattlefield 4 Monster

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Crazy bang for the buck, beautiful finish inside and out. The Kepler 860m is great, combined with an i7-3.4 quad spec cpu. You are getting some great power - and it's still cheaper than a Macbook Pro. Keyboard is basic, but fairly nice overall. Design is also surprisingly slim, and Lenovo is kind enough to include a USB DVD reader out of the box.

Cooling is nice surprisingly quiet considering thinness and power tucked away within the machine. It won't stop palm sweat, but you won't really notice the heat coming off of the machine. Mine came with 16GB of RAM, which is absolutely overkill, but you can still upgrade them if you want to.

Battlefield 4... just runs so well. I experienced at the lowest a 45 fps, with it mostly running above 50. However, some Blizzard titles ran a bit odd. Starcraft II looks great, but don't expect to completely max it out.

Plenty of ports for ya. Glad to see a dedicated Ethernet port still in this day and age. Full, HDMI headphone/mic combo jack, two USB 3 ports, and an "always on" USB 2 port. HDMI port doesn't excatly "stick" into the port, but the headphone jack is excellent. That thing won't let your ear buds/headphones get away easily.

Cons: The TN panel. No, it's not horrible, but yes, it could be so much better. I went to a forum and read guide on how to find and replace it with an IPS panel... I don't regret spending the extra $100 on the panel, which Lenovo should take note.

I am a bit of a clean freak, and this Laptop loves fingerprints. The outside metal finish can easily become dirty. The rubber finish inside also gets a bit nasty, as the heat from the machine (which is cooled well) still sticks around, thus causing a bit warm hands. Even the keycaps pick up on oil residue. There is no escape.

The keyboard's spacebar can be a bit off. Touchpad, when first using it feels horrendous, but just wipe it down. However, its using that one piece design, and touches/clicks can be a bit weird. You'll find many times that the Windows ribbon will pop out a lot.

Other Thoughts: Quick note on the battery - That laptop is thin for a reason, and I expected to not have amazing battery life. Besides, the 860m won't kick in unless it's plugged in. You can still replace it if you somehow ruin it.

Consider getting an SSD. That always help with any PC.

My 1st laptop, and a powerful one at that. I have never bought anything from Lenovo, but I am overall pleased. A well struck balance "do it all" machine, and it still looks great. The machine is a bit heavy, but I like that, as it'll help stay in your lap.

Back to the panel though, if you are willing to do a little DIY and void the warranty (as its nothing special...) I say go for it. The internet will be with you every step of the way.

The Y50 is a great start if you (like me) have never owned a high end laptop, and you wan't something around Macbook like pricing. The device could use a better touch pad, panel, and a material that doesn't have a fingerprint fetish. If you want something JUST for gaming, I'd go for the similarly priced ASUS laptop. Better touch pad and screen. Still, Y50 is thinner and works well when it needs to.

3 out of 5 eggsBad Game Stutter

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Great Price
Great Specs

Cons: Sub Par Display
Games Stutter

Other Thoughts: I bought this as a gaming laptop, but like other users, the stutter during gameplay makes it incredibly annoying. I've scoured the net for solutions to no avail. Returning for refund.

1 out of 5 eggsMUST READ IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING BUYING THE Y50

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Pros:

Bang for buck is great but some bottlenecks.

It's nice. Overall it's pretty nice and not overly gamey looking.

Sound quality is great, JBL speakers.

Backlit keyboard that u can adjust off, dim, and bright.

Keyboard feels good.

Pretty slim. Not very heavy.

Great graphics card, plays everything at great fps and ultra highest settings. The sshd is really a huge bottleneck tho so it gets laggy due to the hardrive acting up.

Never gets crazy hot. You shouldn't have heat problems a long as you have the laptop elevated as the vents are located on the bottom middle part of the laptop. Can get hot but nothing crazy.

Mines came with a intel software starter pack with 5 games. Haven't redeemed them yet but still cool.

Also came with external diskdrive. Another plus.

Cons: Cons:
MUST READ BEFORE BUYING!

So I've been using this lenovo y50 laptop I got from newegg and after having it for about a month, while It was on it blue screened and shut off. When I tried turning it back on it gives me an error and can't detect my SSHD. I've read multiple reviews mentioning this problem happening to other y50 users due to the BAD sshd. it only spins at 5500 rpms which is really slow. Expect loading things to take long and drag on. It also freezes for 5 seconds randomly. the hard drive the laptop comes with is just AWFUL and even broke. I know most people would change the sshd with a ssd but I didn't have the money for an ssd an thought I could live with the sshd, come to find out the drive causes frequent freezing that freezes ur screen for about 5 seconds at a time which you will definitely notice when gaming.

Through the month I had with it had saved a lot of work and data on that drive and can't get it back because my computer can't read the hardrive. I'm going to try to get a new 500 gb ssd drive compensated to me in some way for the lost of data and for selling me a very BAD hard drive. If newegg is helpful ill put it into the review that you they were, bump it to 4 eggs and say it's worth a buy as long as you change the hard drive immediately. as of now ill leave my review at 1 egg because all the work I've put into the computer amounted to nothing and I lost a lot of work and time on my part on a HORRIBLE sshd. Also I will add the length of time it took to get a response and service which will affect the overall rating.
TRUST ME DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP UNLESS YOU PLAN ON CHANGING THE HARD DRIVE IMMEDIATELY!

Windows 8.1

Camera detection problems. The web cam could not be detected without installing new drivers and even then I still have problems with it being detected.

Touchpad sucks. It double clicks when u don't want it too and the press able left and right clicks on the bottom are unresponsive unless pressed very hard. Feels flimsy overall but can be turned off when not needed.

Screen isn't great, needed to do adjustments to make it look decent although my girlfriend didn't see a problem with the stock settings.

Other Thoughts: IF YOU BUY THIS DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND BUY A SSD ALSO. PREFERABLY 500GB

1 out of 5 eggsBoot Failure on 2nd Boot

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: The design and feel of this laptop is great. It was wonderful for the few hours I was able to use it.

Cons: Boot failure on second boot. Went through all of Lenovo's recommended bios changes and forum suggestions and this laptop would not boot.

It seems as if the HDD either unseated or failed. I'm not opening a 2 day old laptop to find out. Luckily, Newegg support and customer service is excellent as this is being RMA'd tomorrow.

Other Thoughts: I would be hesitant to purchase this laptop until whatever boot problem this has is found and taken care of. Reading some other reviews and a few forum searches will show I was not the only one with this problem.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent product

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: The laptop is lightweight and has a good battery life. The GTX 860 GPU places most of the recent titles on high settings with little to no lag.The 16 GB RAM helps in gaming and software development if you are planning to use the laptop to run some of the resource hungry IDEs.

Cons: I encountered hard drive failure on the 3rd day with this error message.

EFI Network 0 for IPv4
EFI Network 0 for IPv6

Seems like a pretty common issue with some of the lenovo laptop models , contacted the customer support and they asked me to sent the laptop and it seems that for some odd reason they do not have a replacement hard drive so my laptop is stuck at their service depot for almost 20 days , hope the problem does not reoccur after I get the laptop back.

Other Thoughts: It is better to use a cooling pad in addition to air conditioning while gaming , it will help in keeping the overall temperature down.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat performance, fan issues

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: - Decent frame rate for games (referring to games like Battlefield or Far Cry 3, able to put out at least 60FPS average if the graphics are toned down to medium - medium/low)
- Decent battery life (get about 5 to 6 hours running just openoffice without wifi enabled)
- Red backlit keyboard (everyone knows having red LEDs makes a computer run faster(not really, but it looks nice))
- Great speakers (better audio than the speakers from my TV, nice and crisp)

Cons: - TN Panels (as expected, bad viewing angles and colour reproduction, decent enough for everyday use and gaming though)
- Locked BIOs (What? You wanted to upgrade your laptop's hardware without consulting Lenovo's list of approved manufacturers? HAH, YOU HAVE NO POWER HERE)
- Fan chirp (you may or may not have this issue, currently a huge thread at Lenovo's forums regarding this issue, fan constantly chirps/pulses, goes away if it's under heavy load (gaming), it can drive you insane...CHIRP...CHIRP....CHIRP)
- Bloatware (plenty of bloatware preinstalled, you may have to spend an hour or two uninstalling them without accidentally uninstalling a driver)

Other Thoughts: TN panel isn't a big deal if you're not planning to use this for graphic design. I have no issues with it currently (though viewing angles make it difficult for spectators)
You may or may not have the fan chirp issue as stated previously, it's a serious annoyance if you do end up with a unit with the issue. Some users managed to get it fixed by returning it to Lenovo and getting the fan replaced while others are waiting for a possible BIOs update.

3 out of 5 eggsWord of caution!

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Price; Brand; Specs

Cons: Screen quality; Poor color spectrum

Other Thoughts: So I bought this model and theres a big problem with it In general a great laptop, but the SSD cache makes it really annoying to actually game on it. Few others and I noted a "screen lag" on this specific laptop. Basically, the screen stays frozen for 2-3 secs on a particular frame. After extensive research and playing around with the settings of the graphics card, antivirus programs, etc.... it basically came down to the hardware itself that was causing the problem.
I eventually returned that model and bought the 512gb SSD version like others did, and it works beautifully well.

1 out of 5 eggsFrequent Freezes

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Cheap!

Cons: Games are practically unplayable because this laptop freezes for a few seconds every so often. The internet says it is due to the HDD.

4 out of 5 eggsexcellent for the price

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: -nice design, clean lines nice modern look
- excellent hardware the GPU runs everything ive thrown at it thus far like a champ all high to very high settings
- backlit keyboard is nice for typing, or gaming in the dark

Cons: - the main drawback ive found with this is the viewing angle it is HORRENDOUS. you have to be sitting just right to get the full beauty of this screen and is difficult at times

- the bloatware was just ridiculous. this thing comes overloaded with tons and tons of software that you may or may not use. takes awhile to get rid of it all

- windows 8 is.. well designed around touch functions makes it a bit of a pain with non touch laptops, i do have a bias for win 7 i wouldve prefered it but win 8 has its perks here and there.

- colors seem a bit washed out someimes, although havent
noticed the faded yellow as others have said

Other Thoughts: The hardware and design are what sold this one for me, so far i love this machine, its hardware is great Nvidia has great support software for optimization of your machine and games for best results. the machine has a great look to it the angles on the lid and back give it nice sharp lines (not physically sharp, aesthetically sharp, gives nice industrial feel). the HDMI out on the side makes adding a second screen or hooking up to a tv quick and easy. it does get a bit hot while running games but it isnt excessive a laptop fan stand does wonders, you can get one just about anywhere. Games ive run thus far : Titanfall, Borderlands 2, Metro Redux, Fallout 3, all on high settings with little to no issues so far. The bloatware, while annoying, isnt all completely useless. Overall very happy with purchase, wish the screen was a bit better it does have sizing issues with some programs thats really my only complaint, but overall very satisfied with the results
