1 out of 5 eggsDissapointing

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Fast CPU.

Lots of ram.

Good speakers for a laptop.

Graphics card is really good for a laptop.

Cons: Extremely slow hard drive. This thing just bogs down the whole system. It's supposed to be a hybrid 1TB with an 8GB SSHD cache. Regardless of what it is, it is so slow. It just makes the whole system crawl.

This thing also feels flimsy and low quality.

The screen is the next thing. It's not the worst, but it sure could have been better. Viewing angles are bad. It is a very cheap 1080p display.

Next, SuperFish. It's bad enough when companies load their brand new systems with crapware, but maleware?! This system comes with SuperFish preinstalled. If you haven't heard, Lenovo has put this on several of their systems and it alters the certificates and makes it much easier for someone to steal information from you. It's also not as simple as just uninstalling either. You have to go through and remove the certificates too.

Other Thoughts: Honestly, I will NEVER buy a computer from Lenovo again just because of the malware that came preinstalled. Look elsewhere! A $1,000 computer should not have any of these issues.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat hardware and system

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: I got this laptop for my girlfriend for graphic design work and playing games. It does both great with it's high res and 16GB of RAM.

SSHD might bit slow, but not really noticeable. No boot issue and Windows 8.1 w/ Update 1 is fine once you get used to it. With 8.1U1 it boots right to Desktop and work very similar to 7.

Lots RAM, great screen res, and fast CPU

Cons: Bigger than expected

Not too happy with keyboard, no dedicated media\mute keys.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Performance

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: -Sound quality is nice
-Backlit keyboard is very handy
-Battery life is pretty good as long as you are not doing mobile gaming
-Sturdy construction (the aluminum top and bottom are very nice)
-Excellent gaming performance for the price.
-Can run Crysis 1 on moderate/high settings
-Can run Crysis 2 and 3 on second highest settings
-Doesn't heat up very much
-Nice keyboard

Cons: -Coming from using a Windows 7 PC for 7 years, the switch to 8.1 was difficult
-Some W8.1 services can bog system down, but it is easy to fix
-Glossy touch display gets very messy, very quickly

Other Thoughts: Overall, I have really enjoyed this machine. As an engineering student I needed a PC that could run coding and modeling software effortlessly, and I have not been disappointed yet.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks well when it has a good day.

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: When this machine is having a good day and everything seems to have gone well at startup, it kicks a lot of but and it is very fast. The RAM really helps with VM's. The backlit keyboard is useful.

Cons: From the start this computer was put at a huge disadvantage by having windows 8.1 installed on it, it took hours to make this machine look and behave more like windows 7..... The sound right from the first day of ownership had problems, sometimes upon awakening from sleep or hibernation modes did not work. I would have to completely reboot the machine for sound to work. This computer also has issues with its wireless network adaptor, often times I find it exhibits packet loss regardless of what WIFI network it connects too and I also have to restart the computer to get stable performance when this problem manifests. I have tried to work with Lenovo support several times to resolve problems with this laptop to no avail.....

Other Thoughts: I had much higher hopes for this computer but so far it has been a problem child. I use Virtual Machines often and had bought this machine in the hopes of using VM's more efficiently but as it turns out under windows 8.1 the virtual computing aspects of the CPU are not available. Only with windows pro or ultimate can the operating system access the virtual computing capabilities of the CPU and this computer can't do that.....

3 out of 5 eggsProcessing power, and that's all.

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This thing is a processing beast. It definitely gets the job done if you need processing power for the price.

Cons: the screen is abysmal. Completely useless for any kind of graphic work. It's just as abysmal for viewing a spreadsheet. If you are even a few degrees off from direct center, it's a mess. TERRIBLE SCREEN. Terrible audio as well.

Other Thoughts: If you are a programmer, this is a great machine. If you are doing anything, even clip art, avoid this like the plague. the sound also sucks. Maximum volume is low enough to wake a baby and not nearly high enough to overcome an airplane's hum. Better bring headphones or speakers if you want to watch anything and actually hear it.

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: No problems with this machine. It is exactly what I wanted. It works very well.

Cons: Nothing bad at all.

Other Thoughts: This machine has an external drive for CDs/DVDs, but I use thumb drives to transfer information.

2 out of 5 eggswhat is this?

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This thing was good, I bought in November for black Friday.Got a good deal. It ran good on games and let me do my schooling.

Cons: I've had this no more than 3months,so why am I having a problem starting my laptop.0xc000021a, this code pops up ands says my laptop didn't start up properly. Really, you guys came highly recommended by several people I trust with tech. One works at a best buy. So how do I have my laptop less than 3 months and I need it fixed...not happy

2 out of 5 eggsFrequent freezes and hiccups

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: i7 8-cores and 16GB RAM. Backlit keyboard is nice. Sound is good for a laptop.

Cons: When playing music or using Word or other applications, the laptop very frequently "pause" or "freeze", this is especially when playing MP3 music because the music will paused or stopped for 1-2 secs between every 1-2 minutes because the drive is "too busy" reading, this is shown in the task manager performance screen there is a near 100% spike of disk usage every time the pause occurs. It is very frustrating. I am not sure if this is a defect of the fusion drive or just because of the computer model. Buyers please beware.

Other Thoughts: I like this laptop overall, but the hiccups or freezes is very frustrating and a big disappointment. I am surprised this was not found by QA and if so, why the company still let this defect slipped by.

4 out of 5 eggsBattlefield 4 Monster

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59426157) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Crazy bang for the buck, beautiful finish inside and out. The Kepler 860m is great, combined with an i7-3.4 quad spec cpu. You are getting some great power - and it's still cheaper than a Macbook Pro. Keyboard is basic, but fairly nice overall. Design is also surprisingly slim, and Lenovo is kind enough to include a USB DVD reader out of the box.

Cooling is nice surprisingly quiet considering thinness and power tucked away within the machine. It won't stop palm sweat, but you won't really notice the heat coming off of the machine. Mine came with 16GB of RAM, which is absolutely overkill, but you can still upgrade them if you want to.

Battlefield 4... just runs so well. I experienced at the lowest a 45 fps, with it mostly running above 50. However, some Blizzard titles ran a bit odd. Starcraft II looks great, but don't expect to completely max it out.

Plenty of ports for ya. Glad to see a dedicated Ethernet port still in this day and age. Full, HDMI headphone/mic combo jack, two USB 3 ports, and an "always on" USB 2 port. HDMI port doesn't excatly "stick" into the port, but the headphone jack is excellent. That thing won't let your ear buds/headphones get away easily.

Cons: The TN panel. No, it's not horrible, but yes, it could be so much better. I went to a forum and read guide on how to find and replace it with an IPS panel... I don't regret spending the extra $100 on the panel, which Lenovo should take note.

I am a bit of a clean freak, and this Laptop loves fingerprints. The outside metal finish can easily become dirty. The rubber finish inside also gets a bit nasty, as the heat from the machine (which is cooled well) still sticks around, thus causing a bit warm hands. Even the keycaps pick up on oil residue. There is no escape.

The keyboard's spacebar can be a bit off. Touchpad, when first using it feels horrendous, but just wipe it down. However, its using that one piece design, and touches/clicks can be a bit weird. You'll find many times that the Windows ribbon will pop out a lot.

Other Thoughts: Quick note on the battery - That laptop is thin for a reason, and I expected to not have amazing battery life. Besides, the 860m won't kick in unless it's plugged in. You can still replace it if you somehow ruin it.

Consider getting an SSD. That always help with any PC.

My 1st laptop, and a powerful one at that. I have never bought anything from Lenovo, but I am overall pleased. A well struck balance "do it all" machine, and it still looks great. The machine is a bit heavy, but I like that, as it'll help stay in your lap.

Back to the panel though, if you are willing to do a little DIY and void the warranty (as its nothing special...) I say go for it. The internet will be with you every step of the way.

The Y50 is a great start if you (like me) have never owned a high end laptop, and you wan't something around Macbook like pricing. The device could use a better touch pad, panel, and a material that doesn't have a fingerprint fetish. If you want something JUST for gaming, I'd go for the similarly priced ASUS laptop. Better touch pad and screen. Still, Y50 is thinner and works well when it needs to.
