2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed more than not.

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418226) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: I purchased this for my wife for gaming as we each spend a fair amount of time out of the house. It runs every game contained in our personal Steam libraries on high or ultra settings at 1920 x 1080 flawlessly. Not as much as a frame skip or stutter.

Cons: This thing gets hot, even when using a Cooler Master NotePal X3. Parts of the keyboard can reach temperatures that are uncomfortable to touch for any extended period of time.

The SSD is kind of a flop, as the OS isn't even partially installed on it. Out of the box as well as after having removed an absolutely pathetic amount of bloatware, OS start up times average around 4-5 minutes. Many system boots require the use of task manager to close and restart explorer, as it rarely executes properly.

The touch pad began failing the second time it was used, and now doesn't work save a rare occasion.

The material finish of the laptop is beautiful, but outside of a clean-room setting, within a few hours the laptop begins to look absolutely disgusting. Every bit of dust, hair, or skin-surface oil is immediately apparent, kind of like turning on a black light in a shady truck-stop motel room.

It may be my personal home network (works fine with a desktop, satellite TV system, multiple phones, tablets, and gaming consoles), but the wireless network speeds are just sad. My desktop can transfer a 1 gigabyte file to any device over the network significantly quicker than this laptop can send or receive just about anything.

Other Thoughts: It will definitely run mid to high-end games with no hiccups, but that is about as far as it will go.

I cannot emphasize how disappointed we are with this laptop. My wife is asking me to sell it so she can purchase something else simply because it is so unenjoyable and such a PITA to use and keep up. I can't say it is a bad suggestion.

4 out of 5 eggsIm Impressed

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418226) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: - Desktop Performance
- Power
- Great Gaming (Arma 3, Ghost Recon Phantom, Warframe, CSGO)
-Backlit Red LED Keyboard.
- Its thin for its power and price.
-Great Heatsync. I could go on.
-External Optical Drive with semimatching case.
-Amazing Speakers.
I did go On

Cons: - Bloatware Ahoy
- Screen is subpar, view angles aint good at all, but passable.
- The Harddrive really slows this thing down, My next purchase is an ssd.

Other Thoughts: I kinda wished I got the Y40, as this laptop was on the larger side of 15.6. I also regret not getting touch, but at this price it was a steal.
I replaced a 2008 Macbook Pro, that thing served LONG, and was powerful as hell. Sadly after about 6 Years in the family, it crapped out. This was the only device, with so much power under the hood for the price, it seemed stupid to get anything else at a higher rate, as the specs on this are quite great HardDrive and Screen Aside.

What I cant wait for is the Black Yoga 8.1 tablet, Its flipping amazing, and will be my next tablet purchase, as I was waiting for lenovo to release a Black, 8.1 Yoga version, and instead of a surface, this will make a great duo. My Ipad first gen is outdated heavily, and will soon die. But again, now I'm exited, as I'm an OCD freak.

4 out of 5 eggsGood laptop, bad laptop. It depends.

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418226) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: - Affordable
- Great specs
- GPU can handle almost anything
- Lenovo makes a sturdy laptop
- Stays quiet and cool even while gaming

Cons: - Fingerprint magnet
- Keys are sometimes unresponsive which is bothersome while gaming
- Screen isn't the best, BUT ISN'T BAD. See my other thoughts below for explanation.

Other Thoughts: Here's the deal with the Lenovo Y50. It's a great laptop, but it TOTALLY depends on what computer you previously owned. I owned a mid-level desktop with a decent gpu and an AMD processor. This upgrade to the Y50 has been AMAZING. The picture is 5x clearer and it overall feels faster. If you are upgrading from a laptop or desktop with no GPU or a cheap one, the Y50 will likely be a good choice for you. However, if you are used to gaming on nice machine that has a really good display, the Y50 will feel subpar to you and likely be a disappointing purchase. If this laptop isn't on sale, I'd personally recommend forking in a few hundred more dollars to buy a more dedicated laptop. While the Y50 is perfect for me and has impressed me with its gaming and general use, if you're used to a high-end machine with high-end graphics, don't go for this laptop. The display will bother you and the 8 gbs of RAM might feel slow to you. I see a lot of gamers saying how terrible the display is on the Y50 or how slow the HDD is. Neither are that bad, they just aren't hardcore-gamer level.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418226) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Good value for its price (especially when it goes on sale). Stays cool while gaming and the fan is fairly silent. It's very thin and light as well

Cons: I personally dont like the mousepad or its position. I tend to touch the corner of the mousepad and that causes it to swap windows randomly.

Other Thoughts: Screen is ok. Not as bad as everyone says.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418226) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: + The GPU and CPU are sufficient to run most games on medium to high settings, and are good for running resource heavy applications such as CAD.
+ Exterior design is sleek, it's a larger laptop but it doesn't feel gigantic when folded.
+ Backlit keyboard with varying brightness is very nice.
+ Built in sound is very good, when set on a hard surface the sub makes it sound a lot better than most laptops.
+ Hybrid drive is faster than a normal HDD, but it's not amazing.
+ Comes with external USB CD/DVD drive

Cons: - Viewing angles on the screen are fairly small and the contrast is fairly low compared to other displays. You'll find yourself frequently adjusting the monitor angle to avoid the washed-out blue color that black becomes when viewed at the wrong angle.
- Fingerprints and dust show up easily on the keys and piano black finish around and below the monitor
- Cooling intake is on the bottom of the laptop and hot air exits out the gap in the hinge of the screen. This means that if it is used on a squishy surface such as a bed or sofa arm, the vent gets blocked and it'll heat up quickly.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I like this laptop, and although is has its shortcomings, I'm fairly happy with it and would recommend it to others.

3 out of 5 eggsOk laptop for the price, not for enthusiasts

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418226) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Backlit keyboard with decent hardware, great sound quality, games run fine if you aren't running anything too heavy

Cons: Awful washed out display, no internal dvd drive

The HDMI port uses onboard graphics instead of the dedicated graphics card which is a huge downside if you want to use an external monitor

Other Thoughts: If you try to disable the onboard intel graphics chip, you cannot use an external display. The Nvidia chip is only for the display attached to the laptop, which is a big enough downside for me to return it, however I can't get an RMA now. I made a hasty decision when this was on sale, I would've made a better choice knowing what I do now.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad

This review is from: Lenovo Y50 (59418226) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 8GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This laptop looks great and the sound is very nice. It comes with a great processor, ram and gfx card. They don't note it but this model does include the portable dvd drive. It runs cool and quiet. Very skinny and light.

Cons: The screen is just as awful as everyone else has said. The hdd is also VERY slow and loaded down with bloatware.

Other Thoughts: In the end you are getting what you paid for with this laptop. sacrifices have to be made somewhere for it to be priced so cheap. I just wish the screen could at least compare to my daughters $400 Asus. Yes.... it's that bad. Not just because it's a TN panel but because it is a VERY cheap TN panel. Any angle at all will distort the already dim picture.
