4 out of 5 eggsSSD models do NOT ship with 2nd HD cables + tray

This review is from: Lenovo IdeaPad Y700 (80NV002AUS) Gaming Laptop 6th Generation Intel Core i7 6700HQ (2.60 GHz) 12 GB Memory 256 GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4 GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 10 Home 64-Bit

Pros: Good machine, happy with it. Bought similar SSD model from another source, with plan to add my own 2nd hard drive.

Cons: When opened case to add 1Tb WD 'Slim' 7mm, could not believe that there were absolutely NO CABLES to connect that drive. Nothing. Just a hole. Jeffrey V. in his review above lists the part numbers needed for cable and the mounting tray -- which are practically impossible to find online. Do a Google search for 'Y700 hard drive install' and you will see that people have been dealing with this for months. Lenovo dropped the ball on this one.

Other Thoughts: If you want the Y700, and it's a fine machine, and if you want to use a second mechanical hard drive, my advice would be to order one with that 2nd drive installed from the factory -- and then upgrade the memory and/or SSD yourself. That way, you will get the drive and cables, and finding an M.2 SSD and memory is easy. Otherwise, you are in for heartbreak and disappointment.

1 out of 5 eggsNice machine. Horrible company!

This review is from: Lenovo IdeaPad Y700 (80NV002AUS) Gaming Laptop 6th Generation Intel Core i7 6700HQ (2.60 GHz) 12 GB Memory 256 GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4 GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 10 Home 64-Bit

Pros: So far the machine has run great. Only small issues with lenovo software, but just get rid of it.

Cons: This particular machine with the 256 SSD is not capable of adding a second hard drive. This is not due to a hardware or even a software problem, but with lenovo not supplying the cage or required cable. After 2 hours of being tossed from one person to another I got a rude supervisor that tells me you got what you ordered and that isn't included. So I ask if I could purchase one and he tells me they aren't for sale. Apparently they are only concerned with the sale and nothing after. At this point I have a "gaming machine" with 2 games installed and only 30gb remaining.

Other Thoughts: If your dead set on getting a lenovo then either pay more for the one with both drives installed or the model with a standard drive installed. And if you do decide to deal with a company with absolutely no customer service then I hope nothing breaks. I have had far better experience with Asus customer service. This is the last time I deal with them.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid laptop.

This review is from: Lenovo IdeaPad Y700 (80NV002AUS) Gaming Laptop 6th Generation Intel Core i7 6700HQ (2.60 GHz) 12 GB Memory 256 GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4 GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 10 Home 64-Bit

Pros: Laptop is pretty fast with the 6th Gen CPU and M.2 SSD. Very thin but deceivingly heavy. System feels solid without a lot of flex. Screen is anti-glare.. Battery life is pretty good too. 5 1/2 hours or so normal use per charge. Probably get closer to 8 with power saving settings. The rubberized coating on the palm rest is also nice.

Cons: First was the drivers. Had a couple failures when i ran the Lenovo system check program. Some drivers were out of date and there were no updates on Lenovo's site. Had to go into device info and right click on the devices and click update. Seemed to work fine.

Second is the lack of cable and tray for the HDD. Didn't read the reviews before buying so I wasn't expecting that. Did some searching online and found a place that does sell the cable and tray parts. The site is Encompass.com and the part numbers are:
Cable: 5C10K25544
Tray: 5B40K25518
Total cost for both with shipping is around $20 so it's not a lot to get the system where I want it. Placed my order so will update when I get them installed.

Last is the 12GB's of RAM. Not sure why they would put in a 4 & 8GB stick when it's only a few bucks more to make it 16. The web site says max RAM is 16 however Crucial site says it will handle 32. Not sure if I want to spend the money for 32 though.

Other Thoughts: Got this as a Christmas present. Replacing a Asus N550JV with a 4th Gen i7 that has had a few issues with keyboard. I'm not a gamer. Like the performance so I can run multiple VM's and the IPS/HD screens (less wear on the eyes). Overall the Lenovo is a solid upgrade. Only issue is not coming with the parts to add a regular HDD and not having them available from Lenovo to purchase. A bit disappointed with the driver updates too but overall very happy with the system.

3 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely unacceptable noise.

This review is from: Lenovo IdeaPad Y700 (80NV002AUS) Gaming Laptop 6th Generation Intel Core i7 6700HQ (2.60 GHz) 12 GB Memory 256 GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4 GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 10 Home 64-Bit

Pros: EDIT/UPDATE: Read in "Other" ...

I like how the shipping box cleverly reads "go ahead, review me". Oh believe me Lenovo/NewEgg, I will.

My first impressions of the laptop were immensely positive. That changed drastically (read in Cons).

The good:
- SSD worth every penny (as is the core i7)

- RAM is DDR4, and 10GB of it makes multitasking a breeze

- The GPU handles games like I can't even believe. I know the 960 is not the "top-o-the line card", but I can hardly complain, given it wasn't my primary focus in the purchase. I played The Witcher 2 on "High" settings, which is absolutely stunning. I don't game much, but I can't believe this laptop can even handle that level of graphic intensity.

- Sound quality is excellent for a laptop, although I take issue with marketing the under-chassis speaker as a "subwoofer" which by definition implies a speaker that produces low bass frequencies (It simply cannot - false advertising here).

- Aluminum chassis is excellent design; opening/closing the screen doesn't feel flimsy, although its hard to open without fingernails. All in all, the design reminds me of a Ferrari, with the handsome dark brushed metal and red aluminum highlights.

- the touchpad is nice and large; fantastic response, makes using windows 10 much more intuitive.

- Cooling system APPEARED to be of good design (that changed)

- The red LED backlit keyboard feels great, but there doesnt seem to be much difference in brightness intervals

- They threw in a matching Lenovo gaming mouse supposedly valued at a lot of cheddar for a mouse, HAH! See what I did there? But I will write a separate review for that.

- I love that no CD-drive bay is in the thing. Considering how valuable real-estate is in a laptop, I am happy to see it go. Good riddance I say. Also like the inclusion of a matching portable DVD burner - nice touch there.

Cons: Less than a week of having the thing up and running, the fan has begun making an absolutely RIDICULOUS sputtering noise, for no reason whatsoever.

Its loud, obnoxious, sporadic and blatantly unacceptable.

Let me just reiterate:

It is LOUD.
It is OBNOXIOUS.
It will make you want to burn your shiny new laptop in the FIREPLACE.

Other less significant cons:
- The 15" screen looks nice, but is covered by a simply awkward plastic, milky film. The film diminishes the otherwise beautiful screen below, although I have seen YouTube reviews which advise how to take it off.
- The exhaust vents on the rear appear to be plastic. Since almost the entire design is aluminum, I cannot comprehend why they made that decision. Realistically, I would not recommend putting this laptop in a messenger bag with the vents facing down, as I predict they are susceptible to breaking easily that way. Again, terrible design oversight.

- The bottom chassis can and will get scalding hot during intense gaming and other CPU/GPU heavy operations if not properly aerated. Definitely treat it less like a casual portable system and more like a mobile desktop that requires ample cooling and airflow during such operations (obvious and expected).

- If considering expanding/adding another HD/SSD, the chassis is not designed with easy access in mind. I was going to, (have before many times) but reconsidered on this model, primarily after reading a how-to guide online that mentioned "plastic snaps that can be broken" if not done correctly.

Other Thoughts: EDIT/UPDATE: I've owned the laptop for about a month now. Originally I wrote some fiery remarks about this machine. While I remain skeptical, I decided to keep the laptop. Since I bought a year warranty with it, I have some extra security should something go wrong.

The noise being emitted from the fans hasn't returned since the first incidence, so I want to see how it performs for another month. I have until January to change my mind should something change, and I hope nothing does, because all in all its a great machine so far.

I added 2 eggs for now...
