No touchscreen. I've enjoyed. One upgrade i'd like to do is get either a faster hard drive or an ssd. Dowloads are a bit on the slow side.

Does this laptop feature a backlit keyboard?

Yes, it wasn't turned on during the first start up but hitting fn+space turned on a white backlight. Looks quite nice!

Does this laptop have an option to disable the touch pad?

Yes you can disable the touch pad..  Also has a great backlit  keyboard.   I noticed now that the price has dropped to $409!  IMO this is a steal for a fast laptop for work.  I mostly have multiple windows open and runs smooth.  Can play most games except the most graphic intense so not for hardcore gamers.  Display is great but not at angles.  Honestly that doesn't bother me too much as I view my computer straight ahead and could care less if the person over my shoulder can see my screen clearly!

A good way to tell, is a 32 bit system can only take advantage of about 4gigs of memory, this computer is expandable up to 16gig, thus shows that it's a 64 bit system.

Question 5

Does the laptop ship with a product key for Windows 10?  I ask because I'm considering ordering a SSD to replace the stock HDD, but didn't want to have to buy Windows after replacing.

Yes it does and I did the same thing that you are wanting to do. If you buy a samsunng drive or some other vendor's they ship a program to clone the drive to sdd for you. So no other product is required. Note that replacing the hdd you have to almost fully disassemble the entire laptop as there are no bay doors for easy access. There are screws under the keyboard before you will get full access to where the hard drive is. So you may want to get another stick of ram and do it all in one shot.

What is the average time you can be on the computer before it over heats?

I've run this thing for hours on end with no heating issues.  I do run Linux, however it does just fine temperature wise when compiling source code or running a hefty NodeJS application.

Can i possible handle heavier programs like Protools, Cubase, FL Studio, etc?

I'm gonna suggest that you consider increasing the memory, since it is only using one stick of 4 GB and possibly going with a faster HD, either 7200 RPM or SSD. Since changing the memory and changing the HD/SSD is essentially the same task,  you would be best served to perform both upgrades at the same time.

Dan, The computer has only one 2.5" sata port. So you cannot add a SSD in addition to the existing 2.5" 5400 rpm HDD. You will need to either decide that 240gb is enough or get a larger SSD. Another thing to consider is a Hybrid Hard Drive if your budget is tight. If you must have a SSD and want a great deal, then you should consider a mushkin SSD. They are assembled right here in the USA and their customer support has been terrific! My whole office runs off the Mushkin SSD's. You can add more RAM in addition to the existing 4gb stick. There is only one stick occupied out of the two available DIMMS. So you can add one more. For available choices you should check the newegg memory finder. Remember you have one available slot. Crucial makes good memory, but I've generally stuck with G SKILL. http://promotions.newegg.com/nepro/14-2242/index.html?name=Memory-Finder I'm not sure about the Panel, but I do not think it is IPS. The colors aren't vibrant enough in comparison to my IPS monitor. It might be a TN panel, but I'm not willing to rip the bezel and disassemble the display to check. All I know is the display is pretty impressive for this price range. If you are wanting to turn this computer into a gaming on the go computer than this should be great with those SSD and memory upgrades.
