How is the trackpad on this laptop? Are the buttons part of the trackpad tracking area or are the separate?

I love it. I'm a big gamer and heavy laptop user. It's been really flawless so far. The buttons are part of the trackpad but it's a pretty large area so even when I do rarely use them they aren't in the way.

May I upgrade the SSD to a 512gb SAMSUNG?

Yes you can upgrade the SSD, I have upgraded both the M.2 SSD to 512 and the SATA HDD to a 1TB SSD.  Fastest mid range portal gamer I have bought so far.

Question 3

In the image I don't see an optical drive- but the specs have a DVRW. On the Lenovo site they have an external one that comes with it. Does anyone know if it's the same case here?

Yes, 64bit is standard for any machine with more then 3GB ram

Can the battery be replaced?

The Y700 battery is housed internally on this model, so it is not as easily replaceable as an external plug-in battery pack that many laptop computers use. It can be accessed, however,  by removing the the bottom cover of the computer. Lenovo doesn't list replacements for these, but I see them available from other sellers. I just bought one of these and the internal battery was a minor point of concern, but as long as I can get to it I don't mind.
