5 out of 5 eggsGamer tablet.

This review is from: NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet (WiFi)

Pros: This tablet is now my traveling buddy. It is the single best gaming device I have purchased in the last 10 years. Emulators, stream from my PC collection, the Grid service (Stream from Nvidia's servers, limited games) I did purchase a number of add on items that I believe are fairly essential. USB ethernet, USB Y splitter, shield controller, and mini HDMI to HDMI adapter.
I can and have streamed movies over VideoLAN from my home PC to a hotel, Netflix, gaming, and anywhere I go I can connect to an HDMI TV and use the big screen.

Cons: Streaming is very dependent on your network at home and abroad. I DO NOT recommend trying to use the shield to play COMPETITIVE games from your home PC. It's a recipe for frustration. For single player, or games that aren't twitch or reaction dependent, it's great.

Other Thoughts: I've read the cover you can get from Nvidia is not very good. I bought a $13 shell that I think is awesome. If gaming is your main goal, this tablet is amazing. Note: You must have a GTX600 or better Nvidia graphics card in your PC to stream from it with the shield Hub app. There are other free apps that do the same, without need of a specific card.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat tablet!!

This review is from: NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet (WiFi)

Pros: I love how i can use it to game and as a regular tablet for when my kids want to use it on youtube. Very sturdy durable. I also love the speakers in the front, very good sound quality and picture quality. Great price. Thank you.

Cons: Sometimes it freezes maybe because my kids downloaded alot of games though. No negative feedback all great.

5 out of 5 eggsNvidia Shield Tablet

This review is from: NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet (WiFi)

Pros: The tablet has a really high response time, which makes really great gaming experience, and web browsing (or any other leisure activities). The 1920 x 1220 resolution also adds to the immersion the tablet brings with it, surpassing the industry norm of 1080p (even though some YouTube videos have some black bars) The game streaming service from Nvidia is nice and not laggy, but depends on an individuals router/modem and internet connection/speed. Lastly the cultivation of Nvidia software with Android Lollipop 5.0 adds to a great mix of menu mobility, and nice organized apps with easy accessibility.

Cons: Not many, the 5.0 megapixel front and back cameras is a bit of a dread. Which can easily be noted due to the cheap price (despite it not feeling cheap at all!) Secondly the need of the Shield Controller, because many Nvidia apps require one to play, which sucks to those who can't afford one.

Other Thoughts: The Nvidia Shield Tablet is a great tablet to own. For the $300 price tag the individual really gets every dollars worth. With the power of the Nvidia Tegra K1 processing graphics chip games looks nice and immersive.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful and Affordable

This review is from: NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet (WiFi)

Pros: -Desktop Grade Graphics
-Extremely Powerful Quad-Core
-Expandable Storage
-Comfortable and Sleek

Cons: -Wifi Only, obviously
-Just cant quite find any apps that remotely tax the sytem
>See Thoughts<

Other Thoughts: I'm not going to dock eggs for the obvious, especially if its what you paid for. Now, I've had this tablet for a week and I just can't find any games and non-benchmark apps that tax the shield. Why would that be a con?

Well its less of a con and more of a 'There is no app that really takes advantage of the whole system' except for Nvidia's built in apps. So yeah, there will be an amazing amount of performance to spare for at LEAST a year to come. I highly recommend this to anyone as a first tablet, and definitely as an upgrade.

4 out of 5 eggsLove this tablet! Took time to reach optimal setup.

This review is from: NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet (WiFi)

Pros: Super powerful, fun, expandable, and addicting!

Cons: Takes a little patience to get it running smoothly

Other Thoughts: If you're reading this you're probably impressed with the Shield's specs, but after reading some reviews, you're worried you might end up with a lemon. I have had my tablet for almost a month, and while there were some hiccups breaking it in, it is now running great. It's just about everything I wanted in a tablet. I have no wifi issues, no bluetooth issues, no battery issues, no light bleed issues, no case cracking issues. There is a very minor lag issues when the device is first booting up and you start the browser, but after its been running a bit the speed picks up and it runs VERY quickly. Here are some pointers for someone buying the Shield Tablet:

1. IMPORTANT: Immediately upgrade to Lollipop and then do a factory reset. During the first boot after the factory reset, be sure to select "Set up as new device"! Do NOT use the Google backup/recovery program! After I did this nearly all the problems disappeared and have not returned. In particular the battery performance improved significantly.

2. You must use 5.0Ghz wifi to get the most out of your Shield Tablet. 2.4Ghz will not run Nvidia GRID, and will also interfere with bluetooth. This problem is not particular to the Shield, and will affect most devices with bluetooth. 5Ghz wifi does not penetrate walls as well as 2.4Ghz, so you'll get fewer bars when you're in a different room from the router as compared to 2.4. (Wifi cafe workaround: Connect your phone to the cafe's wifi, pair tablet with your phone via bluetooth and turn off wifi on the tablet.)

3. Some apps/games do not run on Lollipop. Research this first!

4. There was obviously a bad production lot that got shipped. In addition it took Nvidia a little time to tune the OS. But I think enough time has passed and the tablet is now solid, reliable, and powerful. If you got a bad one make sure you exchange it for a new one (not refurbished).

Now that I've got the kinks ironed out, this thing ROCKS!

-Numerous games not available on other Android devices
-Good battery life
-Great bluetooth pairing with keyboards, mice, and my Nexus 5 (which I tether)
-128GB sd card slot! I put a 32GB in mine.
-You can install many apps/games ONTO THE SD CARD!
-Console mode turns it into a console, complete with multi-controller support.
-Good graphics and sound
-Nearly stock Android with a few apps tastefully installed by Nvidia
-Sweet mappable controller that works with the user interface (sold separately)
-Included stylus with apps to boot
-Ultra HDMI out

I would give this thing six eggs if it worked right out of the box, but it did take a little effort to get it set up. Now I love it and would buy it again in a heartbeat.

2 out of 5 eggsExpected better from Nvidia

This review is from: NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet (WiFi)

Pros: Game stream, Tegra K1, Android based OS, great screen

Cons: No documentation in the box to speak of, and the documenation online is outdated and inaccurate. Nvidia's support when it comes to this product is a JOKE. Controller is required for gamestream to to work and comes at an additional cost. Cameras are worthless, the OS (Lollipop) feels slow and clunky compared to other Lollipop devices. Charging cable broke in less than a week, and the included wall-wart makes a horrific noise when the device is charging. Device takes a very long time to boot. Only comes with 16GB flash storage. Low battery life.

Other Thoughts: You can tell Nvidia is new at the tablet game. They need to get some things figured out and more polished for the next generation.

2 out of 5 eggsNot what I would expect from Nvidia

This review is from: NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet (WiFi)

Pros: Game stream, Tegra K1, Android OS, great screen brightness and quality

Cons: No documentation in the box to speak of, and the documenation online is outdated and inaccurate. Nvidia's support when it comes to this product is a JOKE. Controller is required for gamestream to to work and comes at an additional cost. Cameras are worthless, the OS (KitKat) feels slow and clunky compared to other KitKat devices. Charging cable broke in less than a week, and the included wall-wart makes a horrific noise when the device is charging. Device takes a very long time to boot. Only comes with 16GB flash storage.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Android Tablet for the Money

This review is from: NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet (WiFi)

Pros: Great Screen, front facing speakers, and snappy response to input. Close to stock android (lollipop at that) made it an easy adjustment coming from nexus 7 (2012).

The screen is the first thing I noticed, excellent colors, nothing washed out, no light bleed, just a beauty. Touch input is quick and responsive, I have yet to notice any stuttering and laginess that plagues some android devices.

Sound was better than I expected. For the most part you have really low expectations for sound quality coming from tablet speakers but these are surprisingly good, I don't know if it's the front facing speakers or what.

I really like the expandable storage, that seems to be getting rarer on tablets anymore, especially with the devices intended role as a gaming device. In addition the stylus is a great input device that feels really nice in the hand.

Front 5MP camera is really nice when I Skype, better than most tablets, my niece noticed a difference when I started using it.

NVidia Grid is free until June 30th. I like the idea and intent behind it and have soaked more than a few hours into some games I haven't tried, watch your bandwidth although, it's about equivalent to Netflix in HD. Depending on where the service is at the end of June I may end up getting a subscription.

This is easily the best android tablet on the market period. Coming in at 300 bucks makes it at a price point that most can afford.

Cons: I really like the device and it's price so I understand why these cons exist (device would be more expensive) but here they are.

All plastic construction. A simple brushed aluminum band around the edge and a soft touch plastic back would've made this a non-issue.

The edge near the speakers can create some sharp points that feel sharp in the hand. I haven't gotten cuts or anything like that, it's just something I noticed and occasionally will make me adjust my hand.

Other Thoughts: My wife picked this up for me around halloween so I have no idea where she got it.

The controller is a must if you intend to game, while other controllers are available over Bluetooth, they do lag more than the NVidia branded one. Get the NVidia one and you won't be disappointed.

The NVidia cover is nice as well, but it is expensive for all the more it is.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Gaming Perfomance,Not so Great Battery

This review is from: NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet (WiFi)

Pros: - Great gaming performance
- Nvidia GRID is awesome
- The Tegra K1 Really works well, even for vanilla android apps, despite benchmarks out there
- Speakers are crisp

Cons: - Low Battery life
- Heats up when using NVIDIA Dabbler
- GRID uses up a lot of internet
- Speakers arent the loudest

Other Thoughts: Overall, its a great tablet, I would recommend to any gamer out there, just make sure you get the controller.

Also, the controller feels a bit bulky at first, but now Im used to it, and when holding other ones they just feel overly small ;)

Hope this helped!

5 out of 5 eggsA+ Tablet IF you are tech savy

This review is from: NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet (WiFi)

Pros: Very close to an unmodified Android ROM. Comes with a power consumption/profile app, which is absolutely essential if you want it to last a decent amount of time without having to plug it in. Front-facing speakers are nice, which is very rare in an Android tablet.

Cons: Wish it had a better outside casing. one of the reasons I liked the Samsung Pro tab line so much was the premium feel to the back and side casing, which is lacking here
