3 out of 5 eggseh

Pros: it looked just about brand new, despite the black tape covering the original branding. the overall performance is about what I expected.

Cons: the Atheros card in device performs horribly. it will not break download speeds of over 500Kbps, and transfer speeds over LAN fluctuate from 1Mbps to 0. I do not experience this with any other device in my house, so i'm not bothering with it.. I pulled the cover off, and the antenna wires were hooked up backwards, if that matters. correcting them didn't change anything.

I could have sworn the specs listed this as having Bluetooth, and the driver cd-r that ships with the device has Bluetooth drivers on it, but there is no Bluetooth in my system.

i'm replacing the card with an intel 6235an.hmwwb to resolve those "issues".

Other Thoughts: warning: I tried to use "Goof-Off" on the plastic to remove the sticker residue and permanent marker, it took off paint.

Ubuntu/mint live-usbs tend to give me artifacts and flickering... but then again, every amd apu I have used has done this.

2 out of 5 eggsHardware and OS info

Pros: Hewlett Packard g4-2235dx UEFI for Windows 8. You can install Windows 7 by setting the the boot to legacy. I used Windows 7 drivers from the g4-2189ca for the Video driver/chip-set, Realtek lan and Atheros wireless. I didn't bother with the card reader. Blue tooth drivers are N/G. If you want to install Linux you need to use G-parted to wipe the drive and format to Fat 32 or you won't be able to install Grub.I installed Linux Mint 15 64 bit. I have wireless but no Ethernet. Unless you are going to buy a copy of Windows 8 you will face reduced functionally in windows 7. If you have the patience you can check the other windows 7 drivers in that series and try different Linux distros.

Cons: Ubuntu 64bit has UEFI support but I couldn't get it to work. It still wanted to install GRUB.

Other Thoughts: Good machine if you don't mind a project.

5 out of 5 eggsChoice of OS.

Pros: Very good machine the hardware not to bad for the money. actually very good.
but the more important point is, choice of operating system you can install linux with is a very good OS especially from mayor distributions like ubuntu, mint, suse etc... IT is great not to see windows 8 logo no more. It will be nice to see computers manufactures give people a choice of OS...

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: None.

1 out of 5 eggsWhats the deal Newegg?

Pros: I like the case color and finish.

Cons: Description is deceptive. This is not a "Generic" laptop. Generic implies that the chip sets are non proprietary. This is a Hewlett Packard laptop with Hewlett Packard cheapened chip sets that will only work with their drivers. The drivers that come with this machine are for Windows 8 64bit even though the 3 pages of paper work that come with the machine say they are for windows 7. I installed Windows 7 64bit. Windows could not identify the ethernet or wireless chip sets. It could not identify the USB chip sets either. I could not get online for updates. At least the DVD/CD drive works, no USB drives. I will continue today to try and identify the chip sets and or model number to down load the drivers from HP using Sandra and Belarc Advisor. I also installed Linux Mint 15 and the latest Ubuntu. Neither could get online.

Other Thoughts: If I had known that this is a HP proprietary laptop I would not have bought it for any price. The big secret of what Model number it is makes it a huge pain to try to get it running properly. Why didn't the supplier include the drivers for Windows 7 also?

Why is Newegg selling something like this. I have been a long term customer but this product has a deceptive description and is a rip off.
