3 out of 5 eggsDEEPCOOL Multi Core X6 Laptop Cooling Pad 15.6" Metal Mesh Panel 2*100MM and 2*140mm Fans

This review is from: DEEPCOOL Multi Core X6 Laptop Cooling Pad 15.6" Metal Mesh Panel 2*100MM and 2*140mm Fans

Pros: Comes with 2 rubber bumpers to stick on the lower bottom so your laptop won't slid off.
Quieter than a full throttle laptop fan, but has some coil whine on 3 of the 4 fans.
Moves a lot of air: with 4 fans on, just putting your hand over the laptop's body will alllow you to feel the chill.

Cons: Coil whine on 3 of the 4 fans: nothing some WD40 can't fix, I hope.
Misleading: while it does have 2 USB ports, one is an input that you use to connect to the laptop, thus giving you only one USB. Not so bad, but not what I was expecting. As my laptop has only 4 USB 3.0, the tradeoff is significant. I was expecting to have 2 USB 2.0 to use.

Other Thoughts: For 25 $ shipped, not bad. Had I known about the USB thing, I woulda gotten something else though. Loses an egg for the coil whine, another for the misleading USB advertisement.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice!

This review is from: DEEPCOOL Multi Core X6 Laptop Cooling Pad 15.6" Metal Mesh Panel 2*100MM and 2*140mm Fans

Pros: First cooling unit for a laptop I have ever owned (my fifth one) that has had an appreciable effect on the temperature. My Asus ULVT50 spins its fan at maximum, and overheats at, approximately 190 degrees Fahrenheit. Every cooling unit I've owned before managed to drop a degree here and there and the laptop would hover around 185, which still caused an overheat after it remained there for a while. The X6 has dropped the unit temperature by 20 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit (!) while performing demanding tasks like the Flash plugin or gaming, keeping it around the 140-160 degree range in high demand situations. During low demand work (word processing, web browsing), the X6 has pulled down the idle temperature by about 10 degrees Fahrenheit, idling at 118 degrees right now.

The largest temperature problem I have with my laptop is streaming services that still use flash player. HTML5 services like Netflix (at least, they use HTML5 when you view on a Linux OS) do not bother my laptop much, but services like YouTube and Hulu that are still living in the past push my laptop to its maximum fan speed/overheat temperature very quickly. What I ended up doing was playing the video for 5-8 minutes, pausing it, then minimizing Chrome or switching to another tab without a flash plugin for 2-3 minutes while the temperature went back down. No more of that for me.

This unit also fits a 17" laptop very well despite not stating as such on the product page. The specifications listed the unit as 14.96 x 11.61 inches (actually ended up being about 14.4375 wide) and my laptop is 15.125 x 9, which is very nearly a perfect fit.

Cons: Two very small ones. The little adhesive rubber feet included with the unit (that you affix to the mesh to prevent a laptop from slipping) were all cracked up and broken. My laptop has its own little rubber feet so this was no problem in my case, but it may be an issue for others. I also find using the provided stand puts the unit too steep for my taste, but I also do not use a separate USB keyboard so I may be in a minority by not simply using this laptop as a monitor.

Other Thoughts: After combing through dozens of items and ignoring each one without a listed CFM, I ended up with an array of 7 cooling pads. This one was listed with an absurd CFM of 121 and it was one of only two units from my short list with a fan dedicated to the upper left quadrant (where the bulk of the heat accumulates in my laptop), the other being a 5-fan model with a smaller auxilliary fan in the same position. I was sold on this X6 between the large primary fan in the upper left and its CFM rating.

What I have learned since I started using the X6 is that the CFM rating is the sum of all the fans on the unit. This 4-fan unit with a ~120 CFM is putting out ~30 CFM per fan. I was initially impressed with that statistic when I purchased it, but what you would expect in terms of dramatic air movement is certainly not the reality. This is only a minor gripe about the advertising literature though, since the X6 still works very well for me.

I also learned very quickly that this unit does almost nothing if you don't use the stands to incline it. I'm perfectly happy with my laptop remaining flat on the unit and the unit flat on the desk, but this gives it zero airflow and renders the X6 completely ineffective despite the little feet it has on the underside to keep it from sitting directly against a surface.

Personally I had no care for a great number of features and properties of the cooling unit I purchased because all I needed was a chillpad, not an LED-packed, 80's VHS future spaceship part. It's an effective cooling unit and that's all there is to the X6, unless the "butterfly" design would be pleasing to some arty guy or something. I don't really care because it sits beneath my laptop and I never see it.

Update after 6 months of ownership: the X6 is still performing admirably. I'm one of those people who finds it too inconvenient to power down a computer at night and power it back up in the morning, so all four fans on my X6 have been running continuously since I purchased it back in July 2014. The only time it's been off is when I lost power for a couple of hours and the 5-ish minutes I spent dusting it off. I've yet to see a temperature exceeding 160 F, which is toasty but well short of an overheat for my laptop. The best $30 I've spent in a long time.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Cooling Pad

This review is from: DEEPCOOL Multi Core X6 Laptop Cooling Pad 15.6" Metal Mesh Panel 2*100MM and 2*140mm Fans

Pros: The fan is very quiet compared to previous fans I have used. Before this one, I originally had a Targus Cooling Pad from Best Buy that was similarly priced, and I have to say this fan far exceeds that one. The design is slick and fashionable and both laptops that I have owned (one a 15" and the other a 17") fit perfectly atop the fan. The laptop I am currently using is an Acer Aspire V-Nitro 15" that I bought a few months ago, and while the laptop does not get significantly hot in general, I feel safe using this fan, as the cooling pad has two different cooling settings: a lower-powered setting great for light gaming, and a higher-powered setting for more-intense gaming; each setting works well and my laptop stays very cool even during heavy gaming usage.

Cons: This is almost a non-issue, but the USB wire on the fan to connect to the laptop is on the left side, whereas all of the USB ports on my PC are on the right side, so I have to have the wire stretch across the front of my laptop to reach the USB port. Luckily, the wire is long enough that it doesn't get on the way or become bothersome. A slight complaint, but since it does not interfere with any of my usage of the PC, it isn't a big deal.

5 out of 5 eggsGood NB cooling system

This review is from: DEEPCOOL Multi Core X6 Laptop Cooling Pad 15.6" Metal Mesh Panel 2*100MM and 2*140mm Fans

Pros: Low noise/db, I can only hear it when everything is turned off in my living room.
Provides more than adequate cooling/cfm to cool my i7 2.7 Ghz Dell Latitude. When I take the NB out of the house and use it w/o the cooling pad my temps skyrocket surfing or gaming. When I connect the pad, temps drop.
Considering the negative reviews (noise/cfm) I read here prior to purchasing I'm thrilled at the performance of this well made/inexpensive cooling unit.

Cons: I don't personally have a con. But I'm one of those IT pros that doesn't bang around or abuse my hardware. I can see where some users might break the fan control switch. It's not exactly solid state, it's a normal small electronic switch. Just remember to switch it up/down slowly and gingerly, it'll last longer.

Other Thoughts: I feel compelled to reiterate what another "5" Tech Knowledge user pointed out recently when rating a motherboard. This is not a put-down on any other Newegg customer. He noticed what I have over the years on Newegg: novice computer enthusiasts/hobbyists listing their Tech Knowledge as a 5 when a 3 or 2 is more appropriate. While someone may consider their Tech Knowledge to be very high that is subjective and remember you're rating yourself against possibly millions of other Newegg users. While you may consider your 2-3 years (example) of experience building a handful of computers and browsing a few websites and tech manuals as a "5" rating, in the grand scheme of things it's not. It is not an insult to list your actual tech knowledge, it's actually more helpful for those with less knowledge than yourself. Case in point I list myself as a "5" (I'm sure there are 6's on newegg but we aren't allowed to turn the volume up to 11 here). I'm not only a hobbyist, I break/fix/repair servers and computers for a living. By no means am I saying I'm some sort of computer genius, I've just been doing this for awhile. My short list of skills: level III tech/engineer/admin/manager: 34 years; conservative number of computers built/fixed/repaired: 20,000. Prior to my 19th birthday I'd never sat at a computer or attempted to fix the most simple electronic device. At that point in my career as an apprentice I would have listed myself as a "1". So please, remember the yardstick you're measuring yourself against. I would hope that other IT pros on here don't allow their egos to insult and put down our friends who are primarily enthusiasts/hobbyists. Technical prowess has nothing to do with the ability to enjoy building or repairing computers/electronics. Once you start, you're pretty much hooked for life. I mentor high school teens in building computers and I hope some of them enter the IT workforce. But when someone who actually is a "2" or "3" TK posts they are upset 'cause a screw stripped, their hands don't fit in a case, installation is difficult, or parts don't fit in a DIY build...it makes us wonder why they listed "5" TK? Knowing the proper torque and angle, tools, measuring parts prior to purchase, ability to evaluate compatibility...these are all things that come with time and experience.

Nobody should denigrate someone new to building/repairing electronics because of their actual skills. But when you exaggerate your actual skill level, you make others question everyone's skill level. This is also very common in the IT industry. Especially in ITT tech commercials, you'll see a 20 year old graduate tell his parents he's a Senior IT Network Infrastructure Manager. When in all actuality he/she is really a help desk tech 6 months out of tech school. That's not an insult, just a fact. I guess it's just human nature for some to have an inferiority complex. Your actual skills and accomplishments are more impressive than fantasy.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing. *PLEASE READ*

This review is from: DEEPCOOL Multi Core X6 Laptop Cooling Pad 15.6" Metal Mesh Panel 2*100MM and 2*140mm Fans

Pros: While rendering this is amazing. I don't know the exact temps but it seems as a major decrease in heat on my cpu which is amazing. I love it, while live streaming and playing CS:GO or dead realm or call of duty its amazing. its quiet but in complete silence you will obviously hear it. but in my video you don't really hear it.

Cons: NO CONS

Other Thoughts: I recommend buying it. use on max settings if your PC overheats obviously. Mine doesn't really overheat but it helps a lot.

1 out of 5 eggsDEEPCOOL Multi Core X6 Laptop Cooling Pad

This review is from: DEEPCOOL Multi Core X6 Laptop Cooling Pad 15.6" Metal Mesh Panel 2*100MM and 2*140mm Fans

Pros: none

Cons: Terrible unit. It pushes so little air I can't even tell when it is on except by watching the fan blades.

Other Thoughts: Totally a worthless purchase. If you are looking at one of these save your money.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet Cooler

This review is from: DEEPCOOL Multi Core X6 Laptop Cooling Pad 15.6" Metal Mesh Panel 2*100MM and 2*140mm Fans

Pros: Purchased this for use with a 15" macbook pro in order to keep my temps in check when rendering and transcoding video. I've only had it for a day so far but it has dropped my temps by an insane amount. I love how the 4 fans distribute air across the base of the laptop, and the back left one perfectly aligns with my mac's discrete graphics card. When rendering my CPU temps stay in the low 80's vs mid 90's before and my GPU stays solidly at 70°. During casual use my computers heatsinks are actually cold to the touch whereas they would usually be scalding.

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsSupprisingly solid product

This review is from: DEEPCOOL Multi Core X6 Laptop Cooling Pad 15.6" Metal Mesh Panel 2*100MM and 2*140mm Fans

Pros: Great for notebook running 4 ssd drives and 2 video cards rendering...
The unit is unobtrusive and provides a solid base. If I was to ask for anything it would be that the usb thru was usb 3.

Cons: Doesnt support usb 3 , but for the price, great value.

Other Thoughts: I think some people who haven't purchased coolers before expect these to blow much more air. The idea is to provide a source of cooler air for the computer to take in and prevent sitting on a heat island. This does it exactly as it stated. Great for long renders with the MSI fan cranked up as well. Im sure gamers will appreciate it !
