3 out of 5 eggsShould have held out for a U3 Plus

This review is from: Cooler Master NotePal U3 - Laptop Cooling Pad with Three Configurable 80 mm Fans - Silver

Pros: Fits my MSI GT70 17" laptop perfectly
Quiet - almost silent at high speed
Great design - no tools required to relocate fans

Cons: Airflow not what I hoped for

Other Thoughts: I was looking for something to help me avoid using the "Turbo2" fan function on my MSI GT70 (it's LOUD). I should have looked closer at the U3 Plus, but unfortunately, the U3 Plus is out of stock, and the U3 was on sale plus there's a mail-in rebate.
If there was more airflow, I would have given it 5 stars - great design!

3 out of 5 eggsIt's okay

This review is from: Cooler Master NotePal U3 - Laptop Cooling Pad with Three Configurable 80 mm Fans - Silver

Pros: Modular fan design
Wider than my laptop (17" Dell Inspiron)
Pass through USB port
Quiet fans
Good price (after rebate)

Cons: Doesn't move enough air

Other Thoughts: I decided it was time to buy a cooling pad because I noticed that my laptop fan was cycling more and more often (even after cleaning). I settled on the NotePal U3 pad because of the modular fan placement and the fact that the physical dimensions of the pad are larger than my 17" Dell Inspiron. I haven't had any problems with the laptop moving around...it feels solid on the stand. However, when monitoring my CPU temp there is no noticeable difference when the pad is running as versus when it is off...CPU regularly exceeds 60°C. At least it was a reasonable price.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are sorry to hear you had trouble with our cooler. To clarify, you won't see a considerable difference in the cpu as the laptop cooler is not a cpu cooler, it is a laptop cooler, meaning it will cool your entire laptop as whole, providing fresh air into the vents on the bottom of your laptop. May we ask, did you check your system or hard drive temperature as well (before and after use of the cooler)? Most likely, you will bigger changes there than the cpu cooler. If you wish to troubleshoot further, please contact us so we can be of assistance.

Respectfully,

CMUSA Support.

5 out of 5 eggsUseful

This review is from: Cooler Master NotePal U3 - Laptop Cooling Pad with Three Configurable 80 mm Fans - Silver

Pros: All 3 fans are very quiet. Being adjustable also helps to concentrate the air flow. About half a year of daily use for a gaming laptop and the thing still hasn't fallen apart!

Cons: One of the fans is making slightly more noise than before, likely due to its screws becoming a little loose. Not a big deal, since the fans can be taken apart to be cleaned.

I guess if you really want something portable, the frame and fans might seem a bit too flimsy for rugged use. Best to just leave this thing at home and don't drag it around everywhere.

Other Thoughts: I'm wondering how long it will last. The fans dying eventually is to be expected, but good track record so far tho.

2 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Cooler Master NotePal U3 - Laptop Cooling Pad with Three Configurable 80 mm Fans - Silver

Pros: Sturdy and I like how you can configure the fans where all the heat is outputting. That's the main reason why I bought this product.

Cons: A little after 2 months my fans just stopped spinning. If you blow on the fan to get it started, then it will start spinning again. Not sure why I even have to do that, but I'm not happy with this product.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat, but missing a key feature

This review is from: Cooler Master NotePal U3 - Laptop Cooling Pad with Three Configurable 80 mm Fans - Silver

Pros: It is relatively sturdy for my 14" Lenovo Y40 and I love the custom placement of the fans. Given the location of my laptop's hotspots and vents, I think a single 200mm+ fan would have actually missed them. The reason is that with bigger fans comes bigger gaps of airflow. Fans do not have even distribution of airflow up close. Having smaller fans has allowed not only custom placement, but has provided more concentrated airflow to key spots of the laptop.

Cons: The fan controller seems a bit flimsy and there is a lack of extra usb ports.

Other Thoughts: The lack of usb was huge for me. Many laptops have only 3 usb ports and would be nice to get a couple of extra for low-power peripherals. I would not want to plug my usb-powered headset into the pass-through of the cooling pad - there is too much competition one port between the fans and headset.

4 out of 5 eggsLove the Adjustable fanspeeds

This review is from: Cooler Master NotePal U3 - Laptop Cooling Pad with Three Configurable 80 mm Fans - Silver

Pros: -Quiet
-Light weight
-Sturdy
-Well made
-Adjustable fan speeds and positions
-Good Fans
-Doesn't tax battery life as much as others

Cons: A little bulky. I can't fit it in my laptop backpack. I have a 17.3 inch that just makes it into the bag. This cooler just can't travel with me well.

3 out of 5 eggsPretty good, switch a bit flaky

This review is from: Cooler Master NotePal U3 - Laptop Cooling Pad with Three Configurable 80 mm Fans - Silver

Pros: Keeps vents open well. Aluminum dissipates heat well. Modular fans for hotspots. Haven't seen temps go above 68 C while playing Blacklight: Retribution. Being this is a low/mid range notebook, haven't tested any more robust FPS games.

Cons: Laptop needs to be held level or tends to slip down a bit. Wish the fans were more powerful. The fan speed switch causes the fans to intermittently not turn on. Need to turn it up an down to get them to start.

Other Thoughts: Got this because I swapper out a 35W APU in my Asus notebook for a 45W one. Further modded it by drilling vent holes in the bottom case. Modular fans ideal for pulling air into them. Pretty good product. The switch thing is annoying, which almost prompted 2 eggs if it occurred more frequently.

4 out of 5 eggsCooler Master NotePal U3 (R9-NBC-8PCS-GP)

This review is from: Cooler Master NotePal U3 - Laptop Cooling Pad with Three Configurable 80 mm Fans - Silver

Pros: Made of Aluminum for good thermal conductivity. BIG. Fans can be moved or removed. Speed (noise) of fans can be controlled.

Cons: Top edge of holes were rough and almost sharp. I used 120 grit sandpaper to smooth it out. Rubber piece on "handle" comes off in my backpack sometimes. The Aluminum sheet could be a little thicker to cut down on flex.

Other Thoughts: My first and still best experience with a proper Aluminum laptop cooling plate is the original Cooler Master NOTEPAL. The one with the wedged up wrist rest on the front. My laptop is sitting in it now as I type this. The U3 has better ventilation and support for 17" and bigger laptops.
