Sometimes, trying to get all the functions you need from a notebook can be frustrating. How can you fix that? Notebooks can't be opened up as easily as desktops, but a port replicator can enhance connectability. The Lenovo ThinkPad Advanced Mini Dock can expand the capabilities of a Lenovo ThinkPad notebook so you'll never again be without an empty port.
Just imagine being in a meeting or presentation (or LAN party) and discovering that your notebook's USB ports are all occupied. Just hook up the Advanced Mini Dock and voila: You now have 4 additional USB ports at your fingertips.
This versatile unit is primed for audio and video with a DVI port, an S/PDIF (digital audio) port, and a VGA port. It also has an Ethernet jack, and a keyboard/mouse PS/2 port. An integrated lock with key that will secure both the laptop and Mini Dock so it won't walk away. The Mini Dock is designed for many models, including ThinkPad T60 and Z60 series notebook PCs. Make sure the specific model is supported. A great companion for a Lenovo ThinkPad notebook, the Advanced Mini Dock provides excellent expandability to meet any need.
Pros: Great set of connections that includes audio jacks. This allows me to drop my laptop in at home and work with zero cables to plug/unplug. Includes power supply worth 50 to 80 dollars.
Cons: Price, there is no "normal" laptop tie down. Just a big hole to run the cable through. The plastic can be EASILY broken. Needs a solid steel bottom with the usual laptop tie down connection.
Other Thoughts: Have not had the least problem with ghosting over the analog video.

poor D-SUB VGA video quality

Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: - integrated docking lock for added sequrity - usual dock advantage of not having to deal with cabling/display reconfig.
Cons: - DVI-D connector is useless if your model does not support it (my Z61t does not) - Analog VGA quality fed by dock D-SUB connector is bad - gives fuzzy image with ghosting, which will hurt your eyes. (same problem will exist in Essential Replicator). - useless "unplug" button (software fn+ options more convenient).
Other Thoughts: - overall Thinkpad docking design is non-optimal (IMHO): low docked height is not ergonomic (DELL dock that lifts screen, though makes embedded kbd unusable by tilting it, seems a better solution.

Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: - Comes with a power adapter. - You get the typical docking bay features, exactly as the specs say.
Cons: Because the docking bay is used to support a variety of laptops, not all laptops will be able to use the DVI port, which is one big reason for choosing this dock over the Essential Port Replicator (250510w). In the case of my laptop (T400 with switchable graphics) the DVI port can be used with the ATI card, but not the integrated Intel. If you're hoping to use the DVI port on this guy, make sure you know it will work with your laptop, or at least be ready to send it back if not.
Also, while not specifically a problem for me, no Firewire port.
Other Thoughts: Considering that the whole point of switchable graphics is for battery life, and typically you don't care so much about battery life when you're docked, it's not necessarily a bad thing if you have to switch to the discrete graphics when docked, unless of course you are having driver troubles and need to make the switch in the BIOS every boot-up (along with needing to get the ATI drivers working in the first place if you were just "ok" with the intel drivers in a Linux install).
However, in the end the docking station does as advertised, so no reason to give it a bad score. Just buyer beware on the whole DVI thing, just 'cuz it has a DVI port and Lenovo tells you that this docking station will work for your laptop does NOT mean that the DVI is expected to work. Seems to be a switchable-graphics constraint, but still, buyer beware.

Pros: Nice to have everything plugged in when I show up in the morning with my T61p. I can use the laptop monitor and my 24" LCD side by side with the DVI port on the dock.
Cons: VGA port is junk, ghosting and flickering on the external monitor. Good thing I don't need it.
Other Thoughts: Wish it was a little heavier, feels cheap in a few places.
