Notebooks can't be opened up like desktops, so you need a port replicator to enhance connectability. The Targus Universal Notebook Docking Station can expand the capabilities of a notebook so that you'll never again be without an empty port.

2 out of 5 eggsEh

Pros: --Tossed in for free with the purchase of my new laptop

Cons: --Device isn't as wide as my 15" widescreen laptop, putting all of its ports out of my reach
--Immediately took over my system's on board speakers, which is a pain if I have no intention of using the audio-out on the dock

Other Thoughts: Having recently replaced a laptop that would always run too hot, I liked the idea of using a dock which would allow my new laptop sit off the desk and probably run a bit cooler. That's just about the only advantage I can now see to using this dock.

I have a number of devices that I need to attach via USB while at home, but this dock's ports are inconvenient to reach. Additionally, I don't have a need for any of the other ports on this device. Parallel? Serial? Nope. I'm just going to go pickup a standard USB hub & be done with it.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great for me

Pros: Windows 7 worked almost completely "out of the box", only needing drivers for the serial port (which can be downloaded easily)

All ports have drivers in the Linux kernel and will just work with a modern distro just fine.

Cons: Serial driver did not load automagically in Win 7 when I plugged it in. Honestly this is Microsoft's fault since it is ridiculously popular USB->serial IC and driver installation should be (Prolific 2303).

Other Thoughts: I bought it at goodwill, so it had plenty of chances to Cr ap before I owned it, which implies that this is a rather robust product.

1 out of 5 eggsSave your money

Pros: If you want ports (serial, PS2, parallel) it is OK

Cons: The digital output supports only 2 channels so if you buy it for the digital out ... don't bother

Other Thoughts: I only spent $20 for it and even that it was not worth it. I should have bought a USB hub for less than that.

1 out of 5 eggsNo good

Pros: Nice idea

Cons: The drivers did not load on my newish Vista Tablet PC. After partially loading they asked for a second cd with missing file. Also no VGA pictured here and none on the device. Save your time and money.

Other Thoughts: Also calling it a "docking" station is misleading since it doesn't "dock" but just connects with a USB cable.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk that does not work

Pros: Wedge shape

Cons: This device is terrible with my laptop. Half the USB items connecte d to it do not work. The Ethernet port does not work. It sometimes shorts out my laptop and causes it to reboot. If I unplug a USB device and then plug it back in, it does not work. The VGA-out port is male so most people wanting to connect a monitor will have to purchase a separate adapter ("gender gender") for maybe $20. Someimes I can get this device to work by unplugging it and its USB cord and then reconnecting. And this is the second of these devices I've tried. The first I RMA'd.

Other Thoughts: I don't think the problem is my laptop. It is a 2006 model Compaq Presario V2000 with Windows XP.
