Thermal compound is necessary to create a reliable transfer of heat from your computer's processor to its heatsink to keep your CPU from overheating. Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound does this with three unique shapes and sizes of pure silver particles to maximize particle-to-particle contact area and thermal transfer. It's optimized for use between modern high-power CPUs and high-performance heatsinks or water-cooling solutions. This 12-gram tube contains enough compound to cover at least 50 small CPU cores, or 20 large CPU cores, or 7 to 15 heat plates.

Note: This is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) version, which includes the product, but nothing else. They are packaged generically and are best suited for system builders who don't require documentation or bundled accessories.

  • newegg 99.9% Pure Silver The Arctic Silver 5 uses three unique shapes and sizes of pure silver particles to maximize particle-to-particle contact area and thermal transfer.
  • newegg High Density The Arctic Silver 5 contains over 88% thermally conductive filler by weight. The thermally-enhanced ceramic particles including micronized silver, sub-micron zinc oxide, aluminum oxide and boron nitride particles improve the compound's performance and long-term stability.

5 out of 5 eggsLarge Amount, High Quality

Pros: This was very easy to put on, and it works very well. It spreads great as well if you just put a grain of rice sized dot.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Be aware that this is a very large amount. All you need is the 3 gram container. I messed up putting the heat sink on, and had to reapply the thermal paste, and I still had basically the whole amount left.

5 out of 5 eggsAS-5 Read Mfg recommendation on website

Pros: Arctic Silver 5 (AS-5) is the best thermal compound out there for processor-to-heatsink interface. I am overclocking my "Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W" reliably at 4.3 GHz with AS-5 and a "Cooler Master Nepton 240M - CPU Water Cooling System". This is my third system build in 3 years, and on the build-before-this I had used a thermal pad that came with a different-brand water-cooler, and didn't get nearly as good results in OC'ing. While there is some luck-of-the draw in getting a good-OC'ing processor, with AS-5 you know you're using the best thermal compound.

Cons: Applying AS-5 is a lot more trouble than a thermal pad, especially if you pre-condition the processor-cap and heatsink-base, but I'm getting great cooling with my AS-5 as compared to my prior thermal pad.

Other Thoughts: It is best to follow the manufacturer's applications on their website, which are considerably different than what you see in most system-build demos For my "Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W", I followed Arctic Silver's website directions and pre-conditioned both the processor-cap and heatsink-base and used the line-application (rather than pea-size) per ArcticSilver's instructions, and the results are all for which I could wish.

5 out of 5 eggsLasts forever!

Pros: I've used this thermal paste on every build I've ever done. That's over 400 PCs. I never use stock thermal paste. This simply conducts heat better than anything I've ever used. The only somewhat close thermal compound (in a side-by-side comparison) came with a VERY expensive cooler and it was more of a tie.

This large capacity is amazing. I used it at a medium sized repair shop and it lasted months and months. It seems to last longer than it should when you compare it to the smaller size.

The cooling difference over stock is typically several Celsius. I have checked the paste after 3 years on several machines and it still looked acceptable, which is very different than the chalky ceramic stuff most coolers come with and the temperatures were still good.

Cons: The cap can easily get stuck on so tightly, even pliers can barely get it off. Be careful not to over-tighten it.

Other Thoughts: Although cleaning this paste off, if the need arose, is very difficult, Arctic also makes a cleaning/removal fluid.

5 out of 5 eggsSilver Best!

Pros: My 6-core i7 2011 was running at 42C idle with the regular paste. I carefully cleaned the surface of the Silverstone copper plate, then cleaned the CPU itself. After cleaning, I applied this paste, and WOW what a difference!. Idling now at 35C, if you can believe this!

Cons: None, other than do NOT get any of this on your motherboard, since it is conductive, and might short-out a trace, and then you have big headaches.

Other Thoughts: The price is high.......wish it could be less, but then again, it works much better than any other CPU paste on the market.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Stuff

Pros: This stuff is great. Brought my second rig's cpu temps down by 7-10 degrees! Simply great!

Cons: Should there be?

Other Thoughts: Buy it, really worth buying the 12g one over the 3.5g.

5 out of 5 eggsArctic Silver 5 Safe as pre64 Money

Pros: Folks this is a Very Good Compound to use on your CPU and Heat Sink/Water Cooling Device.
Went and checked the specs out for accuracy and it is just fine stuff.
Silver is not a danger to your health if you are wondering about that.
See other thoughts.

Cons: This stuff will turn your skin dark even black because it is Silver in the 99.9 percent range and having partial sizes in 3 sizes that are sure to be in the molecular to nano size they will be absorbed into the skin. Still silver is NOT Toxic.
In addition this will discolor the CPU plate and Heat-sink/cooler surface as well so it is something to remember.
So be careful not to rub it on your cloths or exposed skin.

Other Thoughts: Silver is THE Most conductive of All the metals -Yes - even over Copper and Gold. Gold is used to keep Silver and Copper from oxidizing and when they oxidize they decrease heat transfer and of course electrically.
Gold is used as a plating to stop this process from happening. Hench the Gold on all the pins you see on MoBo's and other electronics.
Silver is a Natural Germicidal Agent and Bactericidal Killer. Silver is used in many everyday applications.
This product is safe stuff - if anything your PC will be much healthier by using it.
Still remember one thing Silver is conductive so Creep (spreading out of the material under pressure) will occur so Do Not Apply To Much.
It is also hard to get off and i am not a fan of using strippers or gasoline to remove this stuff.
Then you might have a unwanted 'Huffing' experience without proper ventilation.
All the other ingredients are none hazardous to your health and i doubt the CPU will ever get hot enough to melt the Ceramic partials into a Mug.
The other elements are just not going to be a factor in safety - i.e. zinc oxide, aluminum oxide, boron nitride particles and of course ceramic particles.
The compound is stable, but over the long term i found it to become thick and crack giving way to Air Pockets and that Does effect the CPU temp ratings.
So this is a Safe Product to use No Doubt it just does not last as long in it's 'Original State' than i would like.

5 out of 5 eggsSilver is NOT Tovic

Pros: I am sure this is good stuff, i do not use 'This Product' personally, but was looking for an alternate to my Silicone Heat Sink Compound AK-100 and saw Maja B. comments about Silver.
Fact: It is the Best Conductor of Heat and Electricity known - Yes even over Copper and Gold. Gold is used to plate over Both Silver and Copper because of oxidation. In many applications of electronic equipments Silver is used because it transfers the electrical power, signal inputs and other transfers with less resistance so it is faster and produces less heat - more heat more resistance. (Excluding fiber optical wire and devises)

Read Below if you are interested in More Straight FACTS.

Cons: None that i can observe in the makeup of the ingredients listed - propitiatory ingredients not mentioned - are an unknown factor- but - the amounts look to be in the 'Parts Per Million' range.

Other Thoughts: Silver is NOT toxic. Medical uses of silver include its incorporation into wound dressings, creams, and as an antibiotic coating on medical devices. Very Effective in Killing Germs and Bacteria 'in vitro' making wounds heal quicker

NOTE: From the Overview: The thermally-enhanced ceramic particles (under extreme heat bond like a ceramic mug) including micronized silver, sub-micron zinc oxide (inert - only changes color), aluminum oxide (pretty much inert unless under high temps it will change to a salt) and boron nitride particles (more of a medical type substance - not harmful) used to improve the compound's performance and long-term stability. In combination they are not harmful under high temperatures especially ones produced by a CPU.
My point is Do Not Be Afraid of Silver in any form unless it is got voltage running though it.
If it were so terrible why was Money made of silver for well over 1000 years even in the USA up until 1964 when Clad came into use.
So regard the comments as erroneous at best and laking in knowledge as evident.
By the way - Anyone ever use actual Silverware to eat with, drink from a silver cup or eat off a silver plate? Like Duh...
Just setting things straight as i am pretty much an expert when it comes to silver and it's uses
Retired Lockheed Martin/NASA Sr. Electro-Mechanical Project Design Engineer w/Designs in the Medical Division.
Use it - Just don't EAT it. Most likely does not taste good and give you bad breath

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful

Pros: Works great. Wonderful temps, and ease of use.

Cons: Tube only comes about half full. Not really a problem, you pay for the quantity yo get (in this case, 12G).

Other Thoughts: Been using this stuff for years. I used to buy the smaller tubes, but lately I have been doing a lot of computer work for my friends (Building custom rigs, upgrading their systems, etc). As such, I wanted to buy a bigger tube of thermal paste to last me longer. My only wish is that I could get one where the large syringe was completely full. This one comes just over half full. Chances are it will last me a good long time, but I would rather have a LOT and not need to worry about it for even longer.
