Thermal compound is necessary to create a reliable transfer of heat from your computer's processor to its heatsink to keep your CPU from overheating. Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound does this with three unique shapes and sizes of pure silver particles to maximize particle-to-particle contact area and thermal transfer. It's optimized for use between modern high-power CPUs and high-performance heatsinks or water-cooling solutions. This 12-gram tube contains enough compound to cover at least 50 small CPU cores, or 20 large CPU cores, or 7 to 15 heat plates.

Note: This is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) version, which includes the product, but nothing else. They are packaged generically and are best suited for system builders who don't require documentation or bundled accessories.

  • newegg 99.9% Pure Silver The Arctic Silver 5 uses three unique shapes and sizes of pure silver particles to maximize particle-to-particle contact area and thermal transfer.
  • newegg High Density The Arctic Silver 5 contains over 88% thermally conductive filler by weight. The thermally-enhanced ceramic particles including micronized silver, sub-micron zinc oxide, aluminum oxide and boron nitride particles improve the compound's performance and long-term stability.

5 out of 5 eggsThe One and Only!

Pros: Is there any other compound that actually works this well? Probably not! I've used some of the cheaper brands with builds in the past and nothing measure up to the heat transfer you will get from using Arctic Silver, nothing.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I highly recommend Arctic Silver Arcticlean Thermal material Remover & Surface Purifier for cleaning your processor/heatsink if you're upgrading, or even for a new build.

5 out of 5 eggsIncredible!

Pros: Purchased: 02/18/2004

I'm surprised it lasted me this long. I've had 4 major computer builds since then, and only used a dew drops each time. I'm now into my 5th, and realized I have no more. Solid conductor for heat, takes a few years to dry out before having to reapply a new layer. Will buy again!

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsReliable standby

Pros: Consistent, reliable performance, never poor. This quantity should last a good while. Easy to remove with 91% isopropyl alcohol.

Cons: Not the best any more? Certainly no reason to remove an egg; it is quite good.

Other Thoughts: I've been using AS-5 for many years. Although no longer the "best" thermal paste, most people (i.e. all but competitive overclockers) will probably not notice a significant difference (for mild-moderate overclocks, 1C-2C is not significant). The amount in this tube, for the money, is excellent.

5 out of 5 eggsOne of the best compounds available.

Pros: The large syringe allows for easier application and storage of this compound. 12 grams of this compound permits multiple applications over time. Compared to the stock thermal compounds shipped by OEMs, Arctic Silver does a better job maintaining thermal dissipation from dye to heatsink.

Cons: The compound is electrically conductive. Do not get this on components and surfaces that do not require the use of a thermal compound. The possibility of shorting out your device from misuse does exist. Clean up takes a bit of work.

Other Thoughts: Prior to installation, purify the surface/component before applying this compound. You do not want to dilute it with previous compound applications. Be sure to stress the component (CPU/GPU) upon initial application to set and cure the paste. Initial temperatures will seem lower than the average temperatures after a month of consistent usage. Over time, the paste will dry and a reapplication may be necessary if not enough compound is applied initially.

My first installation with this compound was on an Early 2011 13.3 inch Apple MacBook Pro running an Intel Core i5 2.3ghz (Sandy Bridge Core i5 2415m). Initial temperatures using Apple's stock thermal compound ranged from 55 degrees celsius at idle to 107 degrees celsius at load. After applying this compound, I was able to drop the temperatures to 38 degrees celsius at idle to 96 degrees celsius at load. That's an excellent improvement compared to what similar users have reported. I expect this MacBook CPU to last much longer with these improved ratings.
