Thermal compound is necessary to create a reliable transfer of heat from your computer's processor to its heatsink to keep your CPU from overheating. Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound does this with three unique shapes and sizes of pure silver particles to maximize particle-to-particle contact area and thermal transfer. It's optimized for use between modern high-power CPUs and high-performance heatsinks or water-cooling solutions. This 12-gram tube contains enough compound to cover at least 50 small CPU cores, or 20 large CPU cores, or 7 to 15 heat plates.

Note: This is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) version, which includes the product, but nothing else. They are packaged generically and are best suited for system builders who don't require documentation or bundled accessories.

  • newegg 99.9% Pure Silver The Arctic Silver 5 uses three unique shapes and sizes of pure silver particles to maximize particle-to-particle contact area and thermal transfer.
  • newegg High Density The Arctic Silver 5 contains over 88% thermally conductive filler by weight. The thermally-enhanced ceramic particles including micronized silver, sub-micron zinc oxide, aluminum oxide and boron nitride particles improve the compound's performance and long-term stability.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful

Pros: Works great. Wonderful temps, and ease of use.

Cons: Tube only comes about half full. Not really a problem, you pay for the quantity yo get (in this case, 12G).

Other Thoughts: Been using this stuff for years. I used to buy the smaller tubes, but lately I have been doing a lot of computer work for my friends (Building custom rigs, upgrading their systems, etc). As such, I wanted to buy a bigger tube of thermal paste to last me longer. My only wish is that I could get one where the large syringe was completely full. This one comes just over half full. Chances are it will last me a good long time, but I would rather have a LOT and not need to worry about it for even longer.

1 out of 5 eggsTriple phase? Really now.

Pros: Price, rebranding

Cons: Controlled Triple-Phase Viscosity jumped out at me, it means..well anything you want it to me, it's known as a buzzword. For those that don't know, sounds a lot like *wet chemistry* and this simply means that silver nitrate was used in the presence of reduction agent such as sodium borohydride in the presence of a colloidal stabilizer. Don't let these big words scare you, they neither yield a better product or have any effect on thermal transfer between one object to another. All this equals is an intricate way to spike the price higher by rebranding (a market strategy, give something already existing a new name so people will buy it ) by adding some fancy compound name and number which is probably just the formula number on a piece of paper locked away in some dusty filing cabinet. basically what it comes down to, is they have taken arctic silver 5 and added *silver nanoparticles using wet chemistry, physical vapor deposition or ion implantation.

Other Thoughts: On a parting note, and this concerns your health because unlike a faceless organization I actually care for the well-being of my fellow techies alike. You should know that Exposure to silver nanoparticles has been associated with "inflammatory, oxidative, genotoxic, and cytotoxic consequences"; the silver particulates primarily accumulate in the liver. So don't let your kids anywhere near this stuff, but what worries me is that since it's constantly being heated up and ventilated out of the computer, it's not toxic to your loved ones, especially children anyway.

5 out of 5 eggsConsistently Awesome

Pros: Conducts heat and won't stray off of your chips and get everywhere. Also, cleans up easy with a q-tip and alcohol.

Cons: I dunno, maybe it can be messy if you get it on your clothes? So..... don't be dumb and get it on your clothes.

Other Thoughts: I've been using Arctic Silver for over a decade now and it still is the best stuff going.

5 out of 5 eggs:)

Pros: I bought two of these in like 2004 and being a system builder one was enough. It still has about half left after being used on hundreds of systems. The other one I still haven't opened. I doubt I ever will.

Oh yeah, the obligatory "it's better than the watery junk they bundle with your cpu and heatsink" comment should probably be made too.

Cons: None really. Old versions of the stuff were much goopier than tubes I've seen used in recent years.

Other Thoughts: Truthfully, thermal paste has always been extremely over-rated. Sure, when it is applied by someone who knows exactly what they're doing and multiple tests are done to ensure it is doing it's job, which is to fill gaps between cooler and component, then it can make some temperature differences. Unfortunately expensive thermal paste is always touted in social environments as being as important as the PSU in your build. It isn't even close. I seriously doubt more than 5% of the average Joe users who have bought thermal paste like this have actually applied it right. The vast majority just dabs it on and says "oh wow my temps are good" and then sings it's praises without ever knowing if it would be any different than if the cooler was mounted with absolutely nothing between it and the chip it's being used on.
