    How-To

As CPU processing power increases, so does the need to remove the damaging heat that increased power generates. The last thing a computer enthusiast wants when designing their machine is to cap it off with an ugly cooler. The V8 RR-UV8-XBU1-GP, part of Cooler Master’s V series of CPU coolers, provides a high volume of cooling air and whisper quiet noise levels at a bargain price – and looks good doing it. A mirror-finished copper base provides optimal thermal transference from the CPU and the surplus heat flows along eight heat pipes to the aluminum cooling fins. A 120mm fan provides silent cooling while spinning on long-lasting rifle bearings.

This already low noise level can be lessened during periods of low thermal generation automatically by using the integrated PWM functionality which lets the BIOS monitor fan performance and thermal need and adjust the fan's speed accordingly. The mounting kit is designed to allow the V8 to easily attach to a wide variety of Intel LGA775/1366 processors as well as AMD CPUs using the AM2+, AM2 or 940 sockets.

  • newegg Eight Heatpipes Eight high performance heatpipes maximize heat transfer to push cooling performance to the next level.
  • newegg Mirror-finished Base A mirror-finished copper base maximizes heat absorption and transfer for excellent cooling.
  • newegg Four Sets of Aluminum Fins Four separate modular sets of aluminum fins create a large heat dissipation surface for unsurpassed cooling performance.
  • newegg Center Mounted 120mm Fan with Fan Speed Controller A 120mm 800 - 1800RPM cooling fan is mounted to the center of the Cooler Master V8 for optimum airflow. The PCI slot fan speed controller supports manual speed adjustments from 7V to 12V for the optimum balance between cooling performance and noise level.
  • newegg Core i7 Compatible Compatible with the socket LGA1366, the Cooler Master V8 supports Intel's latest-generation Core i7 processors. It also features broad compatibility with AMD socket 940, AM2, and AM2+ platforms, as well as the Intel LGA 775 platform.

3 out of 5 eggsSexy Huge But Ultimately a Failure

Pros: Great Temps (25C idle) and looks like a real engine!

Cons: Bulky, huge, and heavy. To say this cooler takes up a lot of space is an understatement.

It also has incredibly sharp edges. One wrong move, and you're basically bleeding like a faucet.

The cons just don't justify the temps. Especially when you can get comparable results with a more low profile fan like the Hyper 212. And less blood loss too.

Stay away. And since it's 2013. Get a water cooler! I did, and I haven't turned back. Better temps, and less CPU errors too (The V8's heaviness warps the temps and probably contributed to my rampant CPU errors).

Other Thoughts: Why am I even writing this review??? It's 2013! Air-coolers are getting more obsolete by the second. (Maybe I'm just bored and enjoy writing reviews for products I bought in 2010)

4 out of 5 eggsUsed it for 2-3 months, ball bearing broke

Pros: Kept my CPU Cool did its job perfectly

Cons: Ball bearing in the fan seems to have broke after 2-3 months of use and makes an incredibly annoying sound, had to take it out and put my stock cooler back in for the time being

Other Thoughts: Great piece of cooling equipment, just had a somewhat defective one i guess

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing results but....

Pros: Puts out great numbers. One of the best conventional cpu coolers. The heatsink is solid, high quality, and will give some pretty impressive numbers out of an i7. Highly recommended.

Cons: BUT...... The fan sucks. Mine died after only a few months of use. No way around that. Coolmaster uses there A12025 120mm fan in it. Puts out 44cfm at 19dba. It is very easy to replace though. A simple search here on newegg will show dozens of fans that put out higher outputs with equal or less noise.

Other Thoughts: Overall, amazing product. A very competitive alternative to watercooling packages 3x the price.

3 out of 5 eggsJust ok

Pros: Looks cool

Cons: - Doesn't cool very well. I tried everything to get this thing to cool my processor well, but it constantly runs at 85 degrees Celsius on stock CPU settings.

- As mentioned in other reviews, the CPU fan breaks fast if it gets dirty at all. And honestly, I cleaned it at the first signs of wear and it still broke. I took this thing apart and bolted a normal case fan in it and it's back and working, but it needs a lot more to really keep it cool.

Just to note: I've had this thing for 3 years.

5 out of 5 eggsInstallation Tips

Pros: Much quieter than stock AMD fans. Installation is more solid than stock as it replaces springs with screws and bolts. Comes with thermal paste, though I used a different brand for that. It works and looks cool. Although not easily, fan can be replaced. The big fan was what had sold me on it.

Cons: Instructions for AM3 socket show the emblem facing the wrong direction for proper fan flow. At the bottom of the directions it does show the correct direction, which I noticed after I had already followed the other steps installing it the wrong way- though I still wondered which picture was correct. The fan speed control knob install did not match product, for those installing you can pull the knob off with a pair of pliers to fit it through the hole on the back plate and having the nut on the outside seemed to be the most solid for me. I wouldn't think the knob does anything since the fan should be controlled by temperature when hooked up to the CPU fan connector on the motherboard, but there are not instructions on that, so who knows. I'm fairly certain the backside part to the heatsink goes blackside down (Probably material to prevent shorting out connections), not everyone might know that and the directions do not make it clear. The directions show some tab with an X on it which makes no sense to me. To get the flow correct I removed the fan and turned it around instead of taking everything apart again. From this experience, I learned the fan is a major pain to remove because the bottom screws are very hard to get at. I've read the fan dies after a little bit so I'll probably pre-emptively replace it soon. If you can connect the fan before connecting the heat sink do so because the fan header can be hard to get at afterwards.

Other Thoughts: If you are considering upgrading an existing heatsink, keep in mind the back screw holes might be covered up by your case which would make removing the motherboard a requirement before installing any new heatsink - pain. This should be a quick check before ordering any heatsink that you may want to do so that you know what you are in for. In my case, the stock AMD fan died so I had no choice but to replace the heatsink, so checking would not have made a difference. My Intel stock fans are all still running strong.

2 out of 5 eggsover rated cooler

Pros: It works great at first. Keeps a i7 920 o/c'd at 3.5ghz @ around 37-38c at first.

Cons: after 3 months, you will have to clean it. which in many of your cases it will require you to totally disassemble your pc and remove it from the mobo. The bottom fan mounting screws are a bish to get out and back in... on the positive, once back in, the fan isnt going anywhere soon. Its big and bulky and not very efficient for it's purpose.

Other Thoughts: The price has dropped since my purchase. Your money is best spent elsewhere. a Hyper212 or liquid cooling would be a more viable option and money better spent. I will be moving to liquid cooling very soon. Easier to clean and in my book, less time cleaning and more time gaming wins every time.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat cooler

Pros: Fantastic performance, keeps my overclocked FX4300 running cool. Installation fairly simple, although it helps to have someone to hold it in place while starting nuts on the retainer. Looks cool with the red LED.

Cons: It is LARGE, be sure to check that you have the necessary clearance in your case before you order.

Other Thoughts: Keeps my AMD FX4300 (OC'ed from 3800 to 4200) running at 24c idle and 49c full load (2 hours of prime95). Instructions aren't the greatest, but is an easy installation. Used arctic silver 5 instead of the included thermal paste. My setup: cooler master HAF 922 case, raidmax 730 watt P/S, asrock 990FX extreme3 MB, AMD FX4300 CPU, 2 x Asus GTX550 ti video in SLI, mushkin 60 Gb ssd system drive, WD 500 Gb data drive, dual layer DVD rw drive.
