3 out of 5 eggsCooler heads prevail

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: My properly installed Hyper 212 EVO works.

Cons: This is a make-up review -- but I will go to my grave believing that the 1150 standoffs were in the 2011 bag, which meant hours of trying to install using the incorrect standoffs. For that, and the deservedly maligned instructions, I still deduct two eggs. CM sells thousands of these, they can invest $1200 on a technical writer.

1 out of 5 eggsMissing parts, a common occurrence

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: I assume it will work well once I get all the missing parts.

Cons: The item was missing the back plate and one of the 4 standoffs for my motherboard. Contacted support and they said I needed to request the parts (and then touted how awesome they were that I could do that right on their website). Apparently, this happens so frequently that they have a form for requesting parts. It's now been 3 days since I requested parts and they haven't shipped yet. Talked to live help and they said they would rush the part. I asked them about the second part (each request is separate), and they were like uhh, what? So I gave the request number so they would send both parts.

Other Thoughts: I've been buying stuff from Newegg since the beginning, usually several thousands of dollars every year, and this is first time that I have had missing parts. How hard is it to count one backplate and four stand offs when packing? Apparently it is difficult for Cooler Master.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid design, works well

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: Good solid installation hardware, easy install (aside from needing to remove the mainboard from the case, but that's just the way it is; far better than the LGA 775 mounting scheme bending mainboards at least). Cools the processor quite well, dropped temps (and noise) notably over stock without a huge investment.

More elaborate air-cooling, or water cooling setups, would only get you marginally better cooling compared to the drastic increase in price.

You really can't go wrong with a big surface area, direct-touch heatpipes, and a 120mm fan.

Cons: The fan was a bit noisy upon startup; I was not expecting that. I was worried I'd have to replace the fan, but after a couple of minutes it suddenly quieted and hasn't happened again since. Maybe something got jostled in shipping and it needed to settle back into place. At any rate, it's been working fine through lots of uptime and several cold boots.

It's also a bit big, but you should know that when you purchase a heatsink of this size. It can fit in many (but not all) regular cases; just make sure to measure first.

Other Thoughts: I got a similar design from Xigmatek years back; Cooler Master seems to have refined the design and dropped the cost, without (to my knowledge) having sacrificed functionality.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate from my last review

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: Works really well, on my i5 4690 I hover around 55 - 59 degrees on my hottest core at 100% CPU usage (Non-synthetic).

Quiet, until I get to around 80% CPU usage, which is to be expected.

Cons: Setup was a little complicated, but this was my first time installing a third party heatsink

Other Thoughts: I'm keeping one egg off because the one I had RMA'd ha a huge gash in the bottom of it, but thanks to Neweggs excellent (Or should I say, eggcellent) customer service, I had a new one in about a week free from defects.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat quality for a great price

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: Took a while to install but once I had it up and running it does a great job keeping my cpu cool, I have it overclocked to 4.4GHZ and my temperature stays around 23-25 C idle.

Cons: Not really a con, but its huge.. Its blocking my other 2 ram slots. Which are not in use atm but when I do plan on upgrading I may have some difficulty putting them in.

Other Thoughts: Will try to update in a few months

4 out of 5 eggsMuch better than stock cooler

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: Under heavy load at 4.1 GHz, gives me about 20 C cooler temperatures than the stock cooler (that came with Pentium G3258) (Using each cooler's included thermal paste). Gives significantly more room for overclocking than stock cooler. Feels well built. I don't have the experience to know how it compares to other aftermarket coolers; this is my first build. Fits socket 1150. Mostly clear instructions.

Cons: Installation relatively difficult. Requires access to back of motherboard. Requires simultaneous tightening of screws, and you really have to keep them even as you're going in or you'll have to take the screws out and start over. Noticeably louder than the stock cooler.

Other Thoughts: My feelings on the difficulty of installation are probably only applicable to relatively inexperienced builders, as I would have a much easier time installing it again if I had to now that I know how.

4 out of 5 eggsJust a slight problem

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: - Everything is functional
- Money to performance ratio is all a customer could ever ask for
- All parts were of high quality

Cons: - The retention plate was a nightmare to install.

Other Thoughts: The amount of pressure and the precision that must be put into installing the retention plate was was do-able, but a huge hassle. It could of been a minor manufacturing defect but when I attempted to install the retention plate the middle pin would not fully go into the middle hole of the bottom plate of the heat sink. After what seemed like an hour I somehow got it to go in all the way and installed it correctly. After this however the cooler worked flawlessly giving me ~60 degrees Celsius in Prime 95 and other stress tests.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat cooling system, no instructions???

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: This thing is super cool...as in temperature. It keeps my OC i7 processor at a nice 33 degrees C and works like a charm

Cons: This thing did not come with any instructions so it was kind of a mess installing only because i was too prideful to look on youtube. once i looked on youtube on how to install it was a breeze. also this thing is HUGE!! make sure you have enough space

5 out of 5 eggsCool, but... HUGE

This review is from: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Pros: The thing keeps my AMD 8350 nice and cool, no worries about it overheating, the thing truly is a beast. Got the huge box, thought to myself, it's just the box, pull out the heatsink, it's not just the box, the thing is massive.

Cons: Not enough to take an egg away imo... But you can't expect to use all your DIMM slots with this thing. It'll block the one closest to your CPU... And depending on your mobo and profile of your RAM, you may run into issues completely with it. You may want to figure out a different way to face it to work around this issue.

Also... The guide is as cryptic as ever.
