Just as there's no such thing as too much power, there's no such thing as too much cooling. Thermaltake brings high-powered cooling to AMD and Intel users – and does it with style. The CL-P0478 GunMet Orb – the latest in their Orb family of CPU coolers. Geared to support gamers and high-end enthusiasts in their battle against excess heat, the GunMet Orb features 140 crotched fins – shaped like tree branches in profile – radially arrayed around an 80mm 1800RPM fan.

The fin design provides superior airflow and maximum surface area for efficient heat dissipation with multi-directional heat exhaust. The ultra-quiet 17dBA sound level and white LED in the fan provide a whisper-silent, stylish addition to your system.

The GunMet Orb brings quiet cooling to both Intel Socket LGA775 processors and AMD Socket AM2 and AM2+ CPUs. Intel Core 2 Quad, -Extreme, and –Duo processors are supported as are Pentium D, Pentium 4 and Celeron D systems. Athlon 64, -X2 and FX chips along with Sempron CPUs can also benefit from the cooling caress of the GunMet Orb.

  • newegg Excellent Cooling Performance The crotched aluminum fins optimize heat dissipation and the 80mm, 1800RPM cooling fan delivers an air flow of up to 77.85 CFM for supreme cooling performance.
  • newegg Universal Socket Compatibility The Thermaltake CL-P0478 features broad compatibility with AMD socket 754, 939 and AM2 platforms, as well as the Intel LGA 775 platform.

4 out of 5 eggsso far so good.

Pros: Lotsa air flow, keeps a few things aired up because of the girth of this beast.

Cons: It's big, and impossibly hard to initially install. It took me 15 minutes just to get the first screw on to attach to the motherboard.

Other Thoughts: amd phenom 9950 idles at 38-40C and gets up to 55-58C overclocking only to 2.8 Ghz. not as good as I wanted, but I don't have too much knowledge on the heat that's expected of the quads.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Quieter than my case fan, lol. Keeps my AMD 64x2 5400 at 25*C idle.

Cons: Blue light; I hate case lighting. Pretty big; I had to get creative with the wiring, and looks like it might be blocking 1 of the RAM slots.

Other Thoughts: I was surprised it fit into my Antec Minuet350 case.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Very Well

Pros: Very quiet and looks great. keeps AMD 4000+ at 28C.

Cons: It is large, however in my case this was not an issue.

Other Thoughts: I lapped my CPU before i bought this cooler, and my temps were around 35C, with the new cooler i dropped 7C. well worth the price.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat cooling without liquid

Pros: Quiet, inexpensive, no liquid, keeps my q9400 cor 2 quad running at under 40 C

Cons: BIG, had to shave down the edge to clear the south bridge heat sink and fan (EVGA 790I motherboard)

2 out of 5 eggsI like these Orb coolers BUT...

Pros: I love these type of coolers I own a Blue Orb, running it for the past two years no issues and almost silent. It comes with some paste and hardware for what I think is an easy LGA775 installation.

Cons: I opted for this one and well, its kinda OK. It's just like my Blue Orb BUT louder. It didn't sound right at all. It had a low grinding sound. I opted to RMA it, and buy myself the Golden Orb this time from Newegg.

Other Thoughts: Well, if the Golden Orb does not work as described I still have the Red one to try out. Hey these are great coolers I think. I say try one out. Maybe I just had a bad one.

5 out of 5 eggsthank you New Egg and Thermaltake

Pros: This is an add on to my review from yesterday. The response and action taken by New Egg and Thermaltake was quick and makes this product well worth buying.

Cons: I had already taken the cooler off the motherboard because New Egg was letting me return it before I read the response from Thermaltake!!

2 out of 5 eggsless than 2 mos old and broke

Pros: While it worked it cooled the CPU efficiently although I don't overclock.

Cons: It was bigger than I expected (but my fault for not paying attention to measurement), I was able to fit it in my standard ATX tower case after removing the back case fan. Then without provocation, and only 2 months later, it started making a horrible vibrating noise. It appears that the fan it wobbling, so I checked the tech support website and it appears that that problem is common enough to be included in the FAQ and the answer is to replace. My temporary "fix" is to lay the case on its side which keeps the fan level and I will let New Egg replace it under their standard return policy. I will post later as to how that goes!

Other Thoughts: I am dreading the experience of replacing this as it is a real pain because of the tight fit!!!! I would hate to damage my CPU.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello carine61,
The FAQ is for all coolers so customers know how to replace a failed product. it is not exclusive to the CL-P0478. Please contact cs3@thermaltakeusa.com and we can replace just the fan for you.

5 out of 5 eggsGunMet Orb

Pros: Keeps my 640 P4 3.2GHz at a cool 39C while only spinning at 1500 rpm
It's very quiet but very effective it even cools my RAM and northbridge!
Cool white LED fan
Fits like a glove on my MSI 925XE mobo

Cons: Doesn't come with the option to change out fan to match color scheme of my PC.
Doesn't come with a 4pin connector for PWM control.
Doesn't fit the Abit IP35 Pro XE mobo I plan on buying real soon.

Other Thoughts: I got this to replace my Big Typhoon cooler after I stripped out the mounting bracket for the fan and while it doesn't cool as good as the Big Typhoon it does it's job with little or no problems. Also, this cooler has a 120mm fan not 80mm like it says in the description even Thremaltake has this bit of info wrong on their website so take that into consideration when buying because it does take up a good deal of room on ATX mobo's.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable cheap effective cooling

Pros: Keeps my processor down to 43c which is very nice.
Does not cost as much as many just as effective, but more expensive cooling solutions.

Cons: Be careful while mounting, only tighten the screws as much as you need, its very easy to crack your mobo.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat fan but has a few things

Pros: Does a great job at keep things cool.

Cons: There really are only 2 problems with this peice of equipment. First, its HUGE! I was completely suprised that this thing takes up a good amount of my case and interferes with switching out my memory. Second, it's a huge pain to instal. Usually takes me and another person to just screw it in and pray it doesnt crack anything.

Other Thoughts: Great Buy even though it's a pain to install and takes up a huge space. I'd recommend it.....just make sure you have an extra person to help you when you install it.
