1 out of 5 eggsAddendum

Pros: It will sort of work.

Cons: It's generally not cut out for i7 cpus, as others have noted.

It screams the scream of a thousand banshees at full load.

Other Thoughts: This review is an addendum to my first review. I spoke highly of this heatsink before because it was the only heatsink on the market at the time that would meet my needs. And it did.

But now there are just a lot more and better choices available for someone looking for a SFF, about 3u, heatsink.

I recently bit the bullet because I couldn't deal with the noise anymore and upgraded to a proper heatsink.

I recommend you look elsewhere. I just installed the Coolermaster GeminII S RR-CCH-PBU1-GP and I'm so glad I did. My temps are now 5 C lower and the sound is orders of magnitude quieter.

This heatsink served its purpose as a placeholder, but it was time to more on to something bigger and better.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value

Pros: Excellent value. Installed two with Xeon Processors on a Tyan board. Easy install and seem to be very effiicient coolers.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsSeems good to me

Pros: Despite what people may be saying here, I've had this heatsink for over a year and it's been great for me.

I use it in a Thermaltake VF1000BWS and fits just nicely under the PSU.

I have a DFI LANPARTY JR X58-T3H6 mobo, running a core i7 920.

I am a gamer and this is a gaming box with a GTX 260 video card.

The case has four fans, 3 60mm exhaust and 1 92mm intake.

My cpu temps idle in the mid-high 40s and almost never break 60 under load. They tend to hover in the high 50s while gaming.

Super intensive games might get to low 60s, but this almost never happens.

So, despite what the person below me said, while this may have been made for servers, it's doing great by me as a gamer.

Cons: Was the only game in town when I bought it. Maybe there are more choices now, but reviews are hard to come by. This is not a strike against this heatsink, more the field in general for low profile gaming rigs.

Other Thoughts: My setup had very specific needs. Because I wanted a low profile PC, because I wanted to game, because I wanted a core i7, my heatsink options were limited at the time of purchase.

There're still a bit limited even today, but at least now there are choices. When I bought this heatsink this was pretty much the only game in town, and it's worked out wonderfully for me. So much so I'm afraid to replace it. Reviews for such a specific build are hard to come by, and I'd hate to get stuck with an inferior product.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

5 out of 5 eggsNOT MEANT FOR i7 OR W-series.

Pros: Does its Job - Cooling E and L series 1366 XEON processors in a 2U server rack. This means it barely does the job within the 64mm size limit, screams like a typhoon, and has no trouble with 60W and 80W cores.

Cons: Oh dear it cant cool 130W i7's and 130W W-series Xeons....DUH! Its an inch accross - get real! You Compare it to the stock cooler..your first clue is...the stock cooler is double the size of this thing!

Other Thoughts: This is meant for 2U server solutions on sub-100W cores. To think it will chill a full 130W i7 is just ridiculous. Also those whining about the backplate, SERVER BOARDS nearly always have the backplate built-in. Go figure.

HIGHLY RECCOMENDED FOR E and L series XEONS and any X series with 95W or less TDP. No OC'ing.

5 out of 5 eggsQuality Cooler

Pros: Easy to install with high-quality, spring-loaded captive screws and pre-applied thermal grease. Cools the Intel E5502 extremely well. Provides clearance on one side for ATX power connections on Supermicro 8XDTH-i motherboard CPU #1 posiiton.

Cons: None.

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolute Garbage

Pros: Not the poorly designed clips, I was impressed with the mounting.

Cons: HORRIBLY HOT! My i7 runs 100 degrees Celsius IDLE! I had to turn the voltage down on my CPU just to get my computer to turn on! THIS IS GARBAGE.

*DO NOT GET THIS FOR USE WITH AN i7!*

I actually had to UNDERCLOCK my CPU after installing this garbage heat sink just to get my computer to boot up. The stock heat sink is MUCH, MUCH better than this. Again, DO NOT BUY THIS!

Other Thoughts: I felt the fins just to make sure heat was transferring from the CPU to the sink. It is. This heat sink is just terrible. If you're looking to overclock an i7, get something else. ANYTHING else.

1 out of 5 eggsnot sufficient to cool W5580

Pros: May be it may work well with low-end Xeons.

Cons: It is not sufficient to cool W5580 unless fan screams as jet.

4 out of 5 eggsShe screams

Pros: It keeps my Core i7 nice and cool. Like the last review said, 25C-40C. I've seen 42C tops on any one of the "8" cores.

So long as you also purchased the backplate that another reviewer pointed out, this baby was a stone cold synch to install. Comes with the thermal paste already on the heatsink.

Cons: IT SCREAMS. At full load this baby wails. It is godawfully loud at full load. Thankfully it isn't very loud running at an average speed but when your CPU gets hot she fires up loud enough to wake the dead.

Other Thoughts: If it weren't for the noise, I would highly recommend this fan. I am confident my CPU is in no danger of overheating and if noise is not an issue for you buy this fan.

DON'T FORGET THE BACKPLATE.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent!

Pros: Great CPU cooler. Using it on Core i7 Extreme. CPU temp remains in the range of 25-40C, reaches up to 55C under heavy load.

Cons: No mention of the additional mounting kit required DY-PBK-1366 (Item #: N82E16835114082) in the product specs. That's the only reason I didn't give 5/5 rating.

Other Thoughts: Very thankful to other reviewers for pointing out that additional part is required. Saved me a lot of hassle.

1 out of 5 eggsGee thanks alot

Pros: Nice looking fan that should move a bunch of air.

Cons: Would have been REEEEEEEEEAL nice if someone TOLD me I needed a stupid backplate. Now I'm going to have to take this whole thing apart again to REMOVE the factory fan and then install this new one. What a HUGE pain in the lower posterior. Nice job.

Other Thoughts: What a totally wasted effort that shouldn't have happened. Someone couldn't have mentioned in the add that a backplate was required?
