The Zalman 9700 CPU cooler offers high-performance cooling in a unique design. The heatsink and fin assembly are made from 100 percent copper for improved heat dissipation. The base is built of both copper and aluminum, keeping the overall weight of the unit down while providing optimal heat transfer to the triple set of copper pipes. The curved heat-pipe design allows them to draw twice the amount of heat away from the processor.

At the center of the aerodynamically optimized tunnel created by the fins is a 110mm, blue LED fan. Included is the company's Fan Mate 2 fan-speed controller. In Silent mode the fan spins at 1,250rpm and creates 19dBA of noise, but when you need extra cooling for demanding tasks you can shift it up to 2,800rpm to quickly force heat away from your CPU and other system components.

The 9700 is compatible with both Intel's LGA 775/1155/1156 and AMD’s Socket AM3/AM2+/AM2/754/939/940 platforms. All the clips and backplates are included so there's nothing else to buy to get the unit attached to your motherboard in minutes. A tube of Zalman's own thermal grease is bundled in as well.

  • newegg Unique Heatpipe Design Three innovative and curved heatpipes provide a heat transfer capacity matching that of six heatpipes designs for maximum performance.

4 out of 5 eggsUPDATE of 3/19/10 review, still a good cooler

Pros: Keeps your CPU cool and comes with hardware for about 2-3 different types f socket installs. It has blues LEDs for those who are using blue fans and cooler lights in their cases.

UPDATE: It is still going strong after almost 6 years of use,

Cons: I previously had none.

UPDATE: keeping this thing dust free. To clean it can be a bit of a chore due to the way the fan is mounted. You need to practically pull the fan to dust it well. The problem with that is getting at the screws to remove the fan as you can't get at them straight on.

Other Thoughts: Somewhat noisy at full throttle, but not too much. It also fits in the CoolerMaster RC-690 case. (Haven't tested it with a second side-panel fan.) A horizontal mount with a vertical clamp system isn't exactly intuitive, but it is covered in the paperwork that comes with it.

UPDATE: I think I tried the fan in that CM RC690 case over this, and it didn't fit there, so the fan stayed in the lower slot on the side panel.

5 out of 5 eggsZalman is superb

Pros: This cooler is easily the best cooler I've ever owned. I purchased mine way back in 2009 and it still runs like a champ. Over the years through several CPUs and all kinds of abuse this has been 100% reliable.

But I think the real star is Zalman. They've always been helpful with anything I've owned from them and the latest is that they sent me, at no charge, the latest mounting hardware for my cooler. Despite buying it over 6 years ago, no questions asked, they just shipped it to me.

Cons: This guy is big, so it might not fit into smaller cases.
Installation can also be a pain if you don't have access to the back of your motherboard.

4 out of 5 eggsPerformance Great, Installation Hazardous

Pros: The stock cooler on my AMD FX 8350 8 core CPU kept breaking the 70 degree C marker on idle due to proximity to a large, hot video card. This cooler keeps the temp at 45 degrees C on full load and idles around 36. Huge improvement

Cons: The copper is very sharp and I cut my hands in 3 places during install. The CPU fan connector and a couple other connections are under it, requiring that you touch these fins and risk injury.

The retaining bracket is tricky making this a high learning curve install, but it's not hard once you do one.

Wear gloves and have a bright flashlight that can be shined under the cooler.

Other Thoughts: This fan has an external dimmer switch to control its speed rather than having the 4th pin for motherboard RPM control. You'd think it would be cheaper to include that 4th pin rather than making an external switch. I don't like having to crank up the fan every time I play a game.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic CPU Cooler

Pros: The best cooling you can get until you move up to water cooling.

Cons: Don't lose your installation hardware. I purchased my 9700 in 2008, back before they came with the necessary components to install on an 1155 mobo. Now it seems the adapter kits Zalman used to carry are discontinued and are impossible to find. I've sent Emails to Zalman with no reply. Sadly it seems I'm going to have to retire my trusty CPU cooler.

5 out of 5 eggsCPU Fan

Pros: I have owned this for over 3 years, it has been through 2 MB and 3 CPU upgrades, even OCing my cpus it has kept everything cool.

Cons: Not really a con but the clip is a little difficult however the reliability and cooling of this cooler makes it worth overlooking.

5 out of 5 eggs8 years and still going!

Pros: Longevity -- the computer I built with this back in 2007 (NewEgg can verify this purchase btw) STILL has this running. That's 8 years of intensive running on an AMD CPU with some slight-to-moderate overclocking!

Copper -- Copper is one of the best conductive metals (excluding silver which is marginally better and not-so-marginally more expensive). You can expect conductive heat transfers for copper around 4 Watts per (centimeters * Kelvin) at 65 degrees F and about 3.9 W / (cm * K) at 150 degrees F. Aluminum by comparison is around 2.3 to 2.4 W / (cm * K).

Cons: Sharp edges -- Some of us are more clumbsy than others, but it's worth noting I've cut myself a few times when trying to clean dust off the copper fins

New water cooled tech can be superior -- Water absorbs 4.179 Joules per gram * degrees Celsius , J/(g*C . What does this mean? Water can absorb more heat energy than copper. As long as that warmer water is MOVED out of the way for more cold water to absorb more heat, then liquid cooling will always outperform any air cooled system. It's not the fault of the copper. Air just won't absorb as much energy for each degree of temperature change as copper will.

Better, quieter fans are out there, and this one unfortunately can't be easily replaced.

Other Thoughts: If you want a decent air cooler for your CPU for a decent price, this one works quite well.

1 out of 5 eggsSo far not so good

Pros: Looks solid, good design, this thing has some weight to it.

Cons: It doesn't work. First off it appears the wrong fan mount bracket was used. The fan is off center. The top of the fan is wedged against the cooling fins. Like others here the package arrived undamaged and well packed. Also the fan was dead on arrival.

Upon contacting zalman support they immediately blamed newegg saying they must have not have packed it right and it got damaged/warped, which it clearly was not. I have been building computers for 20 years i know the difference.

Poor quality control don't know how anyone could have assembled this and not seen a problem.

Other Thoughts: Dealing with zalman support at the moment, will see how they handle the situation and update the review.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsExtremely good cooler

Pros: - Excellent cooling performance
- Great price
- Easy and flexible mounting
- Good solid construction

I've had this cooler for about 5 years now and it's cooled 3 different processors and it still works like a charm. As of right now I am using an FX-8350 (4.5Ghz) idling around 19-20C. Under heavy load (Prime95 small FFT) it hits around 40C top end. Only ever seen my CPU push 50C when the GPU is spitting fire.

Cons: - LED is kind of weak, but not really a big deal.
- Fanmate is next to useless
- Used a 3-pin so you can't control fan speed with software.
- Somewhat loud, but not too bad.

Other Thoughts: Though I listed a few cons I'll give this bad boy 5 eggs for how ridiculous it performs, even on toasty CPUs like the 8350.
