The Zalman 9700 CPU cooler offers high-performance cooling in a unique design. The heatsink and fin assembly are made from 100 percent copper for improved heat dissipation. The base is built of both copper and aluminum, keeping the overall weight of the unit down while providing optimal heat transfer to the triple set of copper pipes. The curved heat-pipe design allows them to draw twice the amount of heat away from the processor.

At the center of the aerodynamically optimized tunnel created by the fins is a 110mm, blue LED fan. Included is the company's Fan Mate 2 fan-speed controller. In Silent mode the fan spins at 1,250rpm and creates 19dBA of noise, but when you need extra cooling for demanding tasks you can shift it up to 2,800rpm to quickly force heat away from your CPU and other system components.

The 9700 is compatible with both Intel's LGA 775/1155/1156 and AMD’s Socket AM3/AM2+/AM2/754/939/940 platforms. All the clips and backplates are included so there's nothing else to buy to get the unit attached to your motherboard in minutes. A tube of Zalman's own thermal grease is bundled in as well.

  • newegg Unique Heatpipe Design Three innovative and curved heatpipes provide a heat transfer capacity matching that of six heatpipes designs for maximum performance.
  • newegg Aerodynamically Optimized Heatsink Layout and Ultra-Slim Fins A 100% copper heatsink with an aerodynamically optimized "tunnel" design and 0.2mm ultra-slim fins maximize heatsink efficiency with minimal weight and smoother airflow for optimum cooling.
  • newegg Adjustable Fan Speed Controller The bundled adjustable fan speed controller (Fan Mate 2) enables manual fan speed adjustment ranging from 1,250rpm to 2,800rpm and provides a silent mode and low-noise mode for an optimum balance between silence and performance.
  • newegg Blue LED Lighting The ultra-quiet 110mm fan produces brilliant illumination during operation for eye-catching fun.
  • newegg Universal Socket Compatibility As an all-in-one solution for PC systems, the ZALMAN CNPS9700 LED features broad compatibility with all AMD Socket AM3/AM2+/AM2/754/939/940 and Intel LGA 775/1155/1156 platforms.

5 out of 5 eggsAlways good luck with Zalman!

Pros: Very reasonably priced.
Efficient design.
110mm diameter doesn't crowd RAM slots next to CPU.
Cool blue lighting.

Cons: 3-pin connector means the fan is always full-on, no PWM control.
Thin cooling vanes can be easily bent, or even cut you, if you're not careful.

Other Thoughts: Picked up one of these for my FX-8350 system build.
I love the fact that the cooling vanes don't block any RAM slots (I have all four populated).
I tried to use a Hyper 212, but it was too tall for the case and blocked the first RAM slot next to the CPU.
I've used this style of Zalman cooler on several of my AMD builds, never had a problem with any of them.
This one is keeping my FX-8350 even cooler than I expected, with a lot less bulk than the "tower" type coolers.
Definitely not my last Zalman.

1 out of 5 eggspurchased new, but got a used.. just sign :(

Pros: looks cool

Cons: haven't even used it yet but already upset at newegg. my brother purchased brand new for me. it should be in brand new condition, but it's been used. when i opened it i saw black char on the contact plate but then realized it was used thermal paste someone didn't finish cleaning up. so i check the the thermal paste bottle included and it's empty!!! the shiny contact plate has scratches.

Other Thoughts: i feel bad about putting 1 egg for the product but i'm so upset. it's not that the product is bad, i haven't even used it. i assume it's not zalman's fault so i blame newegg for this. not even sure what i should do now, because my brother got it for me and i don't want to tell him the bad news and make him deal with return rma

5 out of 5 eggsWorked great in its time

Pros: 1 of the best air coolers I have ever owned for my CPU back in its day. Bought this back on 2/12/2007 and still have it stored away. This kept my amd phenom 2 x3 triple core cpu at around 15c idle and no higher then 25 - 30c at full load. The thermal paste Zalman used and may still use today was the best I found out there and used it on many cpu's over the years till I ran out.

Cons: NONE. .

Other Thoughts: It don't fit my FX8350 and I don't have the mounting bracket for an amd chip any longer. :-(

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a difference!

Pros: Have a AMD FX-8350 that was topping 63C just with Flash apps in a browser with the stock fan/heatsink. Installed this and now it's about 45C. Couldn't run games at 5760x1080 without the machine rebooting and alarms going off (I imagine I was hitting close to the 70C threshold). Now it's hitting 57C max with those games. Pretty easy to install - the AMD bracket slips right on. Found it easier to install than the stock unit. Just wish it was 4 wire PWM, but didn't want to shell out more $$$. This fit the bill nicely!

Cons: none really - would be neat if it had the 4 wire for mobo control.

Other Thoughts: This is my second Zalman sink/fan combo - first one was for a Pentium 4 that worked just as well back in the day. There are some who have issues with clearance. I have an ASUS M5A97 R2.0 mobo in a Coolermaster N300 case; and I have no issues with clearance for memory, chipset cooling, etc. worked out great!

5 out of 5 eggsCool Cooler

Pros: Nice and cool. I lapped it after lapping my cpu and it did help. I'm new to that sort of thing. cpu stays only a few degrees above room temp now.

Cons: A bit large to put on. I cut myself on a fin putting it on the first time. Putting the brace on is a bit clumsy with the large cumbersome fan base.

Other Thoughts: I wanted to do water cooling again but due to finances, this was my alternative. I'm happy I did it. But when I graduate from my BSEE, I'm sure I'll just swing the Intel way so it won't matter.

1 out of 5 eggsManufacturing defect - Stay away

Pros: Reputation and when they actually work I heard these are quiet and effective

Cons: Recent reviews across a number of sites leads me to believe that the fans on these are being shipped not centered (should have done the research before purchasing). Mine arrived and the fan blades were pushing on a few fins hard enough to push them out of place altogether (so they are not evenly spaced). I reached out to Zalman via email but have not gotten a reply as yet. I'll give them another 24 hrs (slack given based on past reputation) before RMAing and just ditching them outright for another brand.

5 out of 5 eggsTrusted workhorse

Pros: It works quite nicely! My Zalman 9700 has kept an overclocked AMD Windsor core cpu (remember 6400 X2 Black Edition?) temperatures within a rational range so I expect even better temps with this cooler on an 8 core AMD FX (125W)

Cons: It is rather large, but anyone else with an Antec P-180/182 case will have no issues. The fins can be sharp. While the installation went without bloodshed, one must remember to be careful when reaching into the case for any other reason (personal experience!)

Other Thoughts: If your case can accommodate this cooler, its hard to find better air cooler performance. If you are particular about the LED colors, the blue led is not as "aqua" as the blue led's used in the antec cases and fans. Hardly a deal breaker for me, but for some builders I know...

1 out of 5 eggsQA issues

Pros: Does the cooling job

Cons: semi defective item
fan not as quiet as people make it out to be

Other Thoughts: With over 1800 of 5 egg reviews, what could go wrong?
Well, for one thing. The fan wasn't spinning. I immediately realized the fan was actually touching the copper fin and it was stuck in there unable to spin. How can they overlook this in a QA process? I'm assuming they put in the fan mount from difference model, because the fan is sitting way above where its supposed to be. So instead of hassling with shipping things back and forth, I had to drill a new hole behind the fan to make it perfectly fit and spin.

After I had the fan problem resolved, I fired up the computer and to be honest, the fan isn't as quiet has people make it out to be. At full speed, it sounds like a motorboat speeding on a water. I can still hear the fan while idle.
Perhaps I got a defective model. But shipping things back and forth is too much hassle.
