Long popular among users for the design and engineering of their products, Zalman continues to deliver on their promise to make computing truly user-friendly by producing quality products backed with excellent service. The CNPS 9700 NT goes a step further by looking good as it cools your AMD or Intel processor.
The aluminum fins are radially arrayed around the 110mm fan to form an aerodynamic wind tunnel which channels air across the convection fins for optimal thermal dissipation. The ultra-thin fins themselves are supported by a trio of large 8mm heat pipes – each one forming a patented "figure 8" design as it rises from the copper base and passes around the "tunnel" before returning to the other side of the base.
All of the heat sink's components are nickel-plated and polished to a mirrored shine – including the underside of the base where it makes contact with the CPU. The green LED's within the fan reflect off these polished surfaces to add to the already stunning visual style. The 9700 NT comes with a tool-less clip for AMD Socket AM2, 754, 939 or 940 applications and clip and backplate combination for Intel Socket 775 CPUs.
Pros: Cools like everyone else says. Plus if you research comparison tests, this Zalman is always one of the top rated. Installed on a eVGA 680i motherboard with a Intel E6420 Core-Duo 2.13GHz processor. Then I overclocked to 3.3GHz with no problem at all. ;) Use Artic Silver 5 (not cheap/generic thermal grease) on the CPU before you press the Zalman down, a MUST for the lowest temps! My temps are usually in the mid-30s even after 1+ hours of hard core gaming (COH, BF2142, FEAR, etc.). The unit itself looks very cool with the green LED fan, make sure to get a case with a window!
Cons: Wow, it is huge and heavy. The install booklet instructions are not very good. Plus they have directions for both Intel and AMD CPUs right next to each other so it is a bit confusing (plus there is hardware for both types of CPUs in the box). Then when I installed it for my 775 Intel core-duo CPU on a eVGA 680i motherboard I was holding my breath....as I pushed the middle clip down across the heatsink to screw it into the MB it seemed so high up & far to go to get it secure...I was thinking 'man, I hope this is not putting to much pressure on the CPU'...then I heard a crack sound and was hoping it was not the chip...it wasn't, so everything was OK, whew! I guess it takes a good amount of pressure & tension to hold the cooler onto the CPU. Plus remember that
Other Thoughts: I was almost going to give this 4 stars because of the instructions & installation, but that is not really fair. The thing is huge & you just need to be careful. When installing take your time and do not force anything. Use the black plastic 4 hole square bracket - it goes underneath the MB to give the cooler extra support. When you screw in one end of the 'see-saw' clip that goes across the middle of the heatsink, do not tighten it totally, just halfway. Then gently, but firmly push the other end down with a screwdriver inserted into the screw to the 'screw-hole' on the MB....pay attention and focus so it does not slip off the driver. Screw it in and then tighten the other side all the way & you are done. Last thing...I installed this to the CPU & motherboard OUTSIDE of my case & then put everything in and attached the MB to the case. You may want to do it with the MB already inside (make sure to put the black bracket below first if you do), for me it was more room outside on a table.

Great Cooler, not Quiet at Full RPM
Reviewed By: on 11/12/2007
Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: Top drawer in quality, craftsmanship, and cooling ability. Very good performance. It's enabling a 1.1GHz overclock on a Q6600 CPU with the heatsink fan at 80% rotational speed.
Cons: The two tensioner screws that mount the heatsink upper unit to the motherboard bracket are difficult torque down, as the screwdriver must be used at an angle to the screws. Very good motherboard bracket, though. Zalman advertises their heatsinks as being quiet. I've had four different models, and they are not quiet once pushed past 75% fan RPM. The 9700 NT is not an exception, unfortunately. There are competitors to this heatsink that perform on par with cooling but are quieter at high/full fan rotational speeds.
Other Thoughts: This is superior in design to some other tier one CPU heatsinks in that it is narrower from front to back. This makes attaching northbridge fan and EPS-12V power cables much easier when installing the motherboard. Would I buy another one of these heatsinks? Hmm, probably not at current prices. The only inhibitor in my eyes is the annoying sound once past 75% RPM.

Pros: Keeps my AMD 9950 @3.0 at around 36C idle,45C load w/ AS-5. May try and OC a bit more once the paste cures.
Green LED light is pretty cool, especially considering my Cooler Master case has fan ports on top that aren't being used so you can peek in at the cooler.
Installation is pretty easy if you're patient and understand exactly what you're doing.
Cons: I had to move my memory over a few slots to make room for this beast, as well as remove an exhaust fan. Make sure you have ample room around your processor before ordering.
Other Thoughts: Don't apply the grease until you're ready to comit to setting the tension clip in place. Be careful when lining things up - I accidentally put a small scratch on the bottom surface, which doesn't seem to have made a difference.
Overall very happy with the purchase. Really no reason to look elsewhere.

Total Package - Looks and Performance
Reviewed By: The Mad-man on 2/1/2010
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: - Massive unit with lots of fins to dissipate heat - Made with copper for optimum heat dissipation - Sleek looking Nickel-plating; keeps copper from tarnishing - Powerful but quite fan pushes loads of air - Circular shape separates it from the crowd - 4-pin connection
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Even though I have a full-size case, I had doubts that this cooler would fit my case when I first unpacked it. This sucker is massive. Luckily there was enough room, even with a side case fan. I also had my doubts about the mounting bar that stretches across and secures the unit in place; it didn't seem secure at first glance, but it holds the cooler pretty firmly.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: kept my Q6600 decently cool at 3.2GHz
Cons: had to run at 100% to get to 3.2GHz and basic water cooling lets me run at 3.6GHz.
