The Zalman CNPS9900 MAX-R combines some of the most advanced technologies in the market used for CPU coolers to create powerful cooling performance. The CPU cooler utilizes composite heatpipe which is 50% more effective in transferring heat compared to ordinary heatpipes. Combined with a whisper-quiet 135 mm red LED PWM fan positioned between two massive nickel plated pure copper heatsinks, the CNPS9900 MAX-R is more than enough to satisfy overclockers and users who are looking for ultra powerful cooling performance in silent operation.

  • newegg Powerful Cooling Performance [Qmax: 300W] Optimally designed pure copper fins effectively disperse heat away from the CPU via composite heatpipes, while the high capacity 135mm fan quickly cools the heatsink for stable operation of high performance CPUs.
  • newegg Ultra Quiet 135mm Red LED Fan An ultra quiet 135mm fan is incorporated for minimized noise while the red LEDs heighten the cool aesthetics.
  • newegg Black-Pearl Nickel Plating The entire copper heatsink of CNPS9900 MAX-R is ‘Black-Pearl’ Nickel Plated for long-term corrosion resistance, while the deep ‘Black-Pearl’ tone along with the high intensity red LEDs reinforce its powerful aesthetics.
  • newegg PWM Fan Speed Control The PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) fan automatically adjusts fan speed according to the CPU’s temperature, while the included Resistor Cable (RC7P) provides the option of reducing the input voltage for overall reduction of fan speed and noise.
  • newegg High Performance Super Thermal Grease ZM-STG2 The included all new high performance thermal grease ZM-STG2 maximizes heat transfer from the CPU to the base of CPU cooler for intensified cooling performance.
  • newegg Versatile Compatibility The CNPS9900 MAX-R accommodates a broad range of CPU sockets including Intel LGA1156 / 1366 / 775 and AMD AM3 / AM2+ / AM2.

5 out of 5 eggsLong life == true

Pros: Extraordinary build quality!
Long life!
Wonderful cooling!
Looks awesome!

Cons: Somewhat challenging to install.

Other Thoughts: I have had this CPU cooler for two years now, and it is still humming along perfectly! In fact it has been in 3 different computers. During heavy gaming my rig's CPU rarely strays above 40-50 degrees celsius.

The only downside to this CPU cooler is that it can be difficult to install, and some CPU cases might not give you enough clearance behind the motherboard to fit the bracket that attaches to the back of your mobo. Nothing a little dremeling can't fix.

But the counter point to this is...once it's on there, it ain't going anywhere.

5 out of 5 eggsCools like a champ. Best option next to liquid loop

Pros: Keeps a ~4GHz clocked i7-4770K (with Céramique™ 2 TIM) idling @ ~30C and ~54C after full load for hours. I expect this will improve too as the TIM bakes in. Currently on day two of my typical seven day bake in.

Since it is not a liquid loop system, no risk of leaks. Infinite stars for this...

Given the dimensions and mass of this unit, installation was quite easy. I've installed many aftermarket coolers that were 100x harder and felt less secure.

This unit mounts very securely and after seven days of thermal cycling (in a CPU relative horizontal position to ensure good TIM distribution), I will have no worries setting my chassis upright. The mounting system is secure and distributes load very well.

The fan is fantastic (gosh that is a bad pun) ... at idle and normal workload it is effectively silent. At full load it becomes audible but not annoyingly so. Once the load is removed, CPU temp and fans speed drops RAPIDLY back to idle condition. Very impressed by the thermal soak and dissipation capability of this cooler.

Oh, and the looks. I have an MSI mobo with a black & red theme and this cooler is such a perfect match. Visually I could not be happier.

Cons: Zero, none and nada.

Other Thoughts: Measure HxWxD first and be aware this thing is heavy. Trust the mounting system. Enjoy the amazing feels.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cool, quiet, LED is not too bright.
MSI Z87-GD65
Intel i7-4770K (no OC)
Arctic Silver MX4
Antec 1200

Cons: Installation wasn't easy, but wasn't absurdly difficult as others have stated. I bought with a new mobo so I this was the very first think I installed, while the mobo was still out of the case. DO NOT try to install this CPU cooler last - the included hex key already had limited range of motion with just the components soldered to the mobo. Inspect the direction pictures very carefully. Insert the hex bolt into the groove in the backplate and then secure it into place with the black plastic cover. I was able to easily do the install by myself after I figured out what to do - but I could see it taking two people if you tried to do it after you already had the mobo in the case.

4 out of 5 eggsBeefy cooler worth the trouble

Pros: Gives great temps (32C - 43C while overclocking). Some issues with installation but performance is fantastic. Not too loud at max in my opinion.

Cons: Requires surgeon like skills for installation. As many people have said, the AMD plates that attach to the heatsink base look crimped but are basically flat. I had to get out vice grips and pliers to bend them into the proper double kinked position. That said I was still able to get this sucker on without pulling the entire motherboard - took about 2 hours.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat.... Once you get it installed

Pros: It looks great, quiet and works well. I will say that.

Cons: Lets see..... where to start....... well a Snow White coloring book would have been more helpful than their instructions. The FIRST thing you need to know, and the first thing that should be in the instructions is INSTALL THIS BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE. I know it may seem like a good idea to install it last so you don't have to work around it's size but, no, do not do that. Once I figured out how to install it properly it was actually a fairly easy and clever process

Screws they provide strip after first use. Once you install this sucker you'll have a helva time getting it back out, I think the allen screws they give you are made of solder, or maybe clay. And the screws are right under vents (that could have a straight hole drilled in them, just saying) So everything is being turned in at a very awkward angle. It's a one way ticket for this fan.

It made a Whirring noise till I bent tubes a little, but it was real quiet after that.

Other Thoughts: Find a video of someone installing this thing first.

5 out of 5 eggsLooks Great, Runs Great!

Pros: I'm working on my first whole Tower System build!!! I'm using a Intel i7 4770K LGA 1150 Haswell Processor. Not all that hard to install following directions. Zero force required! It looks and runs great. It doesn't block any of my Memory Expansion ports. My Side Case fan doesn't interfere, which I was 50/50 wasn't sure about.

Cons: The Manual is confusing for Fan direction!!!. It tells you to put the Thin cooling fins to the back exhaust, yet when you look at the picture, it's the Fat cooling Fins in the back and you can see the exhaust fan and the direction arrow for flow. The Picture is correct, what it says next to it is WRONG!!! Otherwise you're fan would be blowing forward!!! The picture is correct, I checked.

Other Thoughts: Go and read the Installation manual a few times and go over all of the parts. I didn't have to force anything, or bend anything. It easily bolted right up!!! Make sure you use the correct screws. Make sure you use the Correct Bracket and make sure you are installing both in the correct direction. Make sure you're following the correct directions for the processor you are using. That's why I say read the manual a few times from front to back. It can be a little confusing otherwise. If you don't you'll be fighting it. You also want put the screws into the correct position on that mounting bracket. Again make sure that's facing the correct way. I also didn't use that Center Stick on thing. I left it off. You don't need it. I really can't understand why anyone would have to force it, fight it, etc. More then likely you're not putting it together correctly. I put the Bracket into the back holes of the motherboard and set it down on the motherboard box. Put some Thermal Grease on. Set the Fan down on top with the larger cooling fins facing the back where your external ports are at. Dropped the screws on the top of the bracket in the middle spot and use the long Allen wrench to start screwing it in a few threads then moved onto the next one. After all 4 screws were installed, I tightened them all down the rest of the way. It was really that simple!!! It's nice and tight and zero force was involved!!! Follow the 1155 instructions if you have the 1150 like I do!

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Mounting Hardware

Pros: It looks like it would work good...

Cons: I read some of the reviews on here stating that the screws are too short, or that the heat sink just doesn't fit right. I thought that these people must not really know what they are doing or something. This is my third build using Zalman products, and I have never been let down so much by this company. I don't know what is wrong with the hardware that came with this product, but it just does not work on the AM3+ socket, or at least my AM3+ socket. I even bent the clips to try to get the screws to meet up with the backplate. I just about got the heat sink on, and then the head of the last screw stripped out. Then, in the process of removing the other three screws another stripped out. Basically I now have a $50 paperweight. If you had asked me four years ago, I would have told you I would buy Zalman products for life. Now I am thinking I need to revise my position.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsCool looking, good sale & rebate, worse to assemble than an IKEA dresser

Pros: I was intrigued by this cpu cooler, the LED matched my build, the fins were black which I also thought would look better than copper /silver coloring. Didn't want to get into watercooling/ I game but not crazily. Seems like it should work fine for basic over-clocking. Doesn't obstruct the view of my motherboard.

Cons: Wow, some assembly required should come on a massive warning label on the box. The mounting system/screws/were confusing, the AMD accessories and INTEL accessories were all mixed in a little bag. The instructions were more picture than instruction, and all the parts looked similar. Screws/ mounting were not tall enough, mounting this involved a delicate balance of pressing on the underside of the motherboard and pressing down on this while attempting to screw in a screw that was too short. It is large, so screwing in the upper left corner was a nightmare. This install took me 2 hours maybe? Lost track of time with the rage. Happily satisfied when done, but there's got to be an easier way to install this.....

Other Thoughts: I hooked it up to a SYS FAN port on my motherboard, was actually easier to control the speed than the CPU FAN port. Not sure why but when plugged into the CPU FAN it wouldn't let me adjust speed much higher. Compatibility issues maybe? I have an MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming Motherboard.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat cooling, difficult mounting for AMD

Pros: Huge fan and excellent fin layout. I am getting very cool temps even when overclocking. The red LED is bright enough that it compliments the Corsair AF120s and AF140 I have in the build.

Cons: I am a little irritated by the mounting brackets for AMD. They required way too much force to just get put on. I was fearful of breaking my motherboard/cpu. The design was ever so slightly off and off by just enough that it required that extra force. The wrench was also difficult to reach into past the fan and heatsink.

Other Thoughts: Once installed this unit is solid and quiet. Excellent cooling and easy to maintain.

My build:
AMD Phenom X6 1090T Black
Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
16gb Gskill Ripjaw
XFX HD 7870
Zalman CNPS9900MAX-R
Cooler Master HAF Stacker
